AOL sucks ass for doing this to NG, filtering the best site in the world as junk and not even being able to vote is just shit!

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-09 16:21:15

Ok i also have problems with aol, I was able to get the adress but it seems i can't even vote. I also have to reload just about every game too before it will work.

Well... I'm sure this will never get read - seeing as there are only 200+ messages before it. And I'm sure in those 200+ messages someone has suggested something similar, but.... Fuck it. I MUST BE HEARD!

Although it's clear Newgrounds would have a fairly strong legal case against AOL if it could PROVE that the Disney/ Time Warner/ Nickelodeon/ MTV/ Fox/ everymediaoutletontheplanet syndicate had essentially denied users service to the site... I don't think legal proceedings are the best option here.

As you well know, large corporate entities such as these employ lawyers to be in court every day and adding "NG vs. Aol" to the docate won't hurt them one bit.

However!!! I do see this as an opportunity to increase site exposure. Once you have the additional bandwidth split between the database and the storage servers you should definately find a way to start a small media blitzkrieg. Personally, I would try to get Leo Laporte on your side and have him do a 5 minute bit on one of his programs on TechTV. Every time NG gets mentioned on TechTV, more people will come to the site to see what their bestest friend, the TV, has been talking about.

In addition - if you could get someone like Leo Laporte interested in it, you may also find articles coming out in PC Magazine and other publications.

Try contacting Leo, or John C. Dvorak, or anyone else you can think of with high media exposure. This could bring you the additional traffic you were hoping for with the bandwidth upgrades.

But I would wait until the new servers are in place since most of the new traffic you'll see will be during high traffic time slots.

It's a beautiful idea - too bad you'll probably never read it. pshaw!

I doubt anyone will ever read this, seeing as there are 200+ messages before it. I also doubt my statements will be purely original seeing as 200+ people have already vomitted out some reaction or suggestion... still....

I MUST BE HEARD!!!!!

Although NG certainly has firm ground for a legal battle with AOL, I don't believe the courts are the best forum for this issue.

As you well know, huge sydicates like the Time Warner/ AOL/ Disney/ MTV/ Fox/ CNN/ ComCast/ etc group employ lawyers to be in court every day of the year. Certainly, adding "NG vs. AOL" to the docate won't bother them a bit, and it will just slowly eat away at your time, effort, soul, and money.

I suggest, rather, that NG start a small media blitszcrieg. Contacting anyone with high media exposure to see if they'll carry this story. If you were able to get Leo Laporte or John C. Dvorak interested in doing an article, either in print or on television, you'd see that jump in usage you've been looking for.

Personally, I'd go after Leo Laporte -- his connections with both PC Magazine and his shows on TechTV would pay off in huge exposure for the site.

However, I would wait for the new servers to be in place before I went looking for that kind of exposure. The traffic you will see from something like that will be almost entirely during peak hours so you'll want the bandwidth well split among both database and storage servers before the swell.

It's a great idea - beautiful in it's simplicity - and it's a shame noone will ever read it. pshaw!

Yes... yes... I got an error from the database and had to retype my entire message -- only to find it had already posted the first time.

Damn servers!

Interesting to see the changes that come about in a rewrite, though.

Hmmm..I kinna just thought of something....Maybe Newgrounds should make a movie of them...kinna like a war thing (Like Clocks VS Sticks) Or something of that matter... Little AIM guys running around with cannons that shoot those "700 hours Free once you sign up" discs...It would be actually pretty intresting to see that come to life...with chars like Pico shootin the little bastards up...And the best weapon AOL (America Offline i now will use.) is the Disconnect and Chain Letter spam crap....Hoo...I hope somones listenin to this! This could be pretty kick-ass to go into.

AOL is is the worst ISP there is. I had asked and begged for them to get some filters since their 3.0 version, and nothing was done. Now they do have filters, and they only block this huge list of domains. What a joke, and I'll bet the AOL users who spammed me STILL have accounts when they did it 3 years ago. I'm so glad I don't have AOL anymore. I wrote them a nasty email telling how bad they suck, that they don't listen to their cliental, and something funny about them finding that billion + dollars someone misplaced. I'll bet AOL users still get SPAM from AOL's affiliates, and that "AOL eliminates X amount of SPAM per day" is STILL the #1 used phrase in tech support emails about SPAM, and members get more than that in their inbox each week.

Always
Obscenely
Lying

No wonder we're #1!

Don't forget about Compuserve. It's the same exact thing. Your site is still bullshit to run for the average person without dsl or cable (your people who aren't nerds). Cut down on some pictures or something dude everything on this site is too damn slow.

I myself dislike all 56K and switched to broadband early on, but don't any of you have a mind of your own? Think for yourselves for once! you all follow everything Tom says! Of course AOL is slow, but what makes them not deserve the service they pay for? (And i KNOW that if anyone responds to this they are going to say the person paying is a dumbass)

...and if you really hate AOL's browser, just minimize it and use Internet Explorer like I do...you have a much bigger area to browse anyway.

6 onths of free AOL came with my new computer so I signed up figuring I can't go wrong, I mean it's free right?. I cancelled after three days. AOL service sucks.

Aol has been fighting spam like crazy. There has been a new button in e-mail to report spam. I have clicked to by accident on e-mails that I wanted to keep. What it does is it puts a block on the e-mail address in your preferences then notify's aol. If there is a pattern, I assume they may block it towards everyone. Just an assumption. They claim to be blocking something like a million spam e-mails per day. The biggest problem is the porn because they continually use different hoax e-mail address to send the same garbage. My suggestion is to try to contact AOL, but that might be a shot in the dark. Good luck with it, I ended up signing up with my bellsouth account.

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-12 17:03:55

AOL has been claiming that they are fighting spam for the past few months. They have a new button in the e-mails that will block the sender and then it notifys aol. They claim to be blocking over a million SPAM e-mail per day, but who is to say. Most of it maybe legit mails. I have clicked it by accident, so i had to take the e-mail out of my e-mail preferences. AOL must have newgrounds on a block all mail list. Only a hunch. Try to contact aol, but that might be just a shot in the dark...GOOD LUCK NEWGROUNDS.....

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-12 19:26:30

They're blocking clockcrew.cc mails too. Thank god they are morons, blocking the internet might be their undoing :)

Anyone read Time lately? that magazine is starting to suck ass as well

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-12 21:35:26

Tom have you thought about evaer sueing AOL?

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-12 22:15:20

I am not sure if this has been addressed yet, I didn't want to weed through 9 pages of replies...

AOL has an anti-spam system built into it's e-mail that cannot be disabled by the user, because it exists at server level. If the server gets too many similar e-mails from the same source during a certain amount of time, it blocks all further e-mails from that sender for a set time limit.

This is not only affecting Newgrounds users, but all mass-used services that send out validation e-mails.

Response to AOL Blocking NG? 2003-05-13 00:21:28

Block AOL users. The site would be better!!!!!!!!!
