It's not the people of the US who first called ourselves Americans, it was a term coined by the Europeans to refer to us, so we just started using it. It bothers me too.
Here I am, bored with everything.

Sub topic 1: “AMERICA”
This is another stupid thing I hate. How US citizens have self-appointed the term “American” to themselves, but made it so anybody in the world associates that word with them. Last I checked, America is a whole fucking CONTINENT, not a single country. All countries within America and its divisions (yes, divisions, not separate continents, Central, North and South America are all the same continent, not 3 different ones) could be called Americans, but you can’t say that without the US saying you are not American. Heck, even in your official name you say you are not America:
“United States OF America”
See that? OF America, not that you ARE America. Monopolizing that term is stupid, but I realize it will stay that way, it just pisses me off.
Umm, the whole thing was so long, so I just read this.
I agree with you, but you're kind of stupid.
Nobody thinks that Central America is a continent.
And South and North America are 2 different continents, but they are both Americas.

people that know me from before should know better, my intent is never that of offending, but I do feel in ranting mood.
Well... that's idk, debatable. I'm no supporter of Bush, I never have been, but I wouldn't go so far as to classify him as a terrorist. Although he does use sorts of public panic as a means to gain support, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as the label him along side the people who ran planes into the twin towers.
It's all about degree. Is no different form those who have labeled him a dictator.
I'll point out here that's it's not just the US that calls itself America. Other countries have labeled them that as well, nor is it really a recent trend. Getting upset about just some silly colloquial use of a term which no one alive today really coined, is a tad much and I'll just chalk it up to the fact that you're in a ranting mood :P
I know the US is not the only one who calls themselves that, I said they started that trend, and it is accepted now, but I feel if you want to be politically correct you shouldn't be selective about it, because tecnically, it would be incorrect.
Take any speech Bush gives with a grain of salt. He may have meant a leader of the world... in stead of the leader of the world. He's not the best public speaker and has made more errors in speechs that I can be bothered to count.
I mentioned that I realize Bush does that kind of thing, but that either way, a lot of people I know from different places get that perception from the US, that they are high on their power, it may or may not be true, but it is perceived that way nonetheless.
While I agree that people need to get over themselves and stop crying about things... I can't say I agree with just allowing people to just be as derogatory and hurtful as possible. It might just be the female coming out in me, but to just sit back accept bullying is more than I'd tolerate.
I never said you should. I mentioned for example when it is being used as part of a joke for example, it is not about the words, but the context really. A really racist person can use anything or any word, not necesarilly racist but still be offensive. Again, I didn't say take bullying, or let it happen, I said pay attention to the context and react accordingly.
Black PeopleLol, be careful, Al Sharpton will come knocking on your door soon.
Oh oh, another touchy subject…well, read and try to understand:
Let it happen, like I said, my intention is not to offend even though I know that will be the end result anyway, I just want a nice debate or arguments.

No. Read my reply to tiggerkitty on this subject, above
also about racial slurs... particularity the N word... i dont get to mad when people use it... but when people use it just to piss people off or to be "edgy" they are dicks
N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger N**ger ... doing stupid shit like that is not ok... stop it
I'm getting tired of stating this: I know that it is not true for ALL people of black color, or any topic I touched, I am GENERALIZING, which entails I know the difference and am just generalizing for the sake of argument, I do NOT believe ALL black people are the same. I am NOT racist, but needed to stereotype to touch the subject, I said so at the beggining of my first post.
... over all i would say you have a biased hate of The United States of America
Maybe, I said already my intent is not to offend, but present things as I see them. I just want a good debate, not controversy. Everybidy, wether they admit or realize it, are a little bit racist, a little bit stupid, a little bit everything, myself included, people can deny it, but everybody is biased about a lot of things, I just felt like ranting. No offence intended.

read again what I said about context
also... what you said about continents
Things have changed over the years, originally, people were coming to the "Americas" because that is what the continent was named, after Americo Vespucio, who was a cartographer who first mapped the continent. It's the same situation with our Sola system: now we can't say Pluto is a planet, even though for the longest time it was, it's not wrong to still call it a plannet just because a group of people decided it is no more a planet. Same with the continents, I was taught in 3rd grade 5 continents, and that is what I learned and will know until I die.
Central America is a sub devision of North America...
Ok, on this one, I KNOW you are wrong, because it would mean Panama is also North america, since it borderlines Colombia, and Colombia is officially part of South America, while Panama is not. Hence, North, Central, South.
south asia is a sun devision of asia
consistency is the key. How can south asia be considered a subdivision, but north and south america have to be a complete new continent? that was exactly my point.
YOU'RE JUST TRYING TO FIND SOME STUPID REASON TO HATE AMERICA
I'm not trying to hate, I'm pointing out incongruences and stupidity.

I agree on pretty much everything, except for the part where you throw the idea that there are five continents. Although it's a fairly pointless argument, most countries and classrooms will teach classes based on seven continents.
Also, i disagree with the statement supporting the reference of "American" for all of the Americas. The way I see it, most Canadians prefer to be separated from the United States, probably also true for hispanics.

Again, I was looking for consistency

I know. I also acknowledged the fact most of the world already has it that way, again, I wanted consistency. I'm hispanic, and I don't mind not being called american, is not the fact itself, it's the principle, because we DO fight for political correctness a lot, and technically, that would not be politically correct. It's the incongruence that bothers me, how it is a selective thing on what to enforce and what to let slide.

WIN :)
I dunno, I'm just in that mood today you know? I miss debating in class for social, we used to debate about almost everything, I just though NG being as diverse and messed up as it is, I would get a good debate out of it.
but people keep either missing the point, or getting mad at me for the wrong reasons. Half of the accusations can be cleared by just reading the first 3 pragraphs in my original post, yet, they keep complaining how I stereotyped for example, when I already said I know it's not every single person or situation, I generalized! sentence me to public hanging already will you? geez.
Other than that, it's good. Things have been disproven, a few new points have been made...that's what I wanted, a debate, with intelligent responses from people who cared enough to read everything and not just what they wanted to read :)

finally! that is exactly my point! That's what I mean, it is stupid!
also that IF they insist on being politically correct, they should be consistent at it! hence the whole point, you finally got it. It is not the examples or the facts, it's the principle that I'm interested in and the idea behind it.
glad we finally agree on something :)

I want to see what the night dwellers of NG think about all this. Remember, read what has already been posted before you reply, so you don't acuse me (again) of something I already stated in the first 3 paragraphs of the post

How did I know you were going to be talking about America?
Pick on some other country, just cause it's cool to make fun of America, and by America |i mean the U.S.A, because not only do Americans think of the U.S.A when they hear American, everyone else in the world does too.
Do you call Canadians Americans?
I also like how you say you aren't racist, but then you say "Americans are like this, black people always brings up slavery"
Just shut up.

*sigh*
No. It doesn't. As i said before, what bothers me is that for a country that tries to be so politically correct, it is stupid to be selective on when to enforce it, since technically, it would be politically incorrect to monopolize the term. the message being, political correctness sucks. read the last few posts in this page, it was discussed there :)
