Teacher arrested in Vons theft

CLAREMONT - A Claremont High School English teacher was arrested last week on suspicion of shoplifting from a local Vons supermarket.

Police Capt. Gary Jenkins said Jane Purcell, 52, brought shopping bags with her to the Base Line Road store, then filled them with $115 worth of merchandise before walking out.

Purcell was detained by store employees who witnessed the theft on security cameras.

Purcell, a teacher in Claremont for 23 years, told investigators she began stealing from the store in January.

"She gradually started stealing more," Jenkins said. "The week we arrested her she had been there five or six times."

Susan Purcell, the teacher's sister, said the shoplifting arrest was part of "a grief-induced, stress-induced, menopause-enhanced nervous breakdown" caused by the recent death of her parents and other family problems.

She stole "not because she wanted those articles," Susan Purcell said. "It was an emotional cry for help."

She said her sister was on disability leave from work and had been seeing a counselor.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed misdemeanor charges against Purcell on Friday for burglary and petty theft, Jenkins said.
