This is going to be extremely useful when I start b/ping for that final badge, the Elite Guard Supreme Commander.

This is awesome, way to go dude. :)

I hope the same doesn't happen to this.

Yeah, my BP Helper was 1½+ years ago, when the servers and database were much ropier than they are now. Also, the big difference is that mine tried to pull the NEXT PID page, and opened the new page if it didn't return an error - which according to liljim was unnecessarily taxing on the database, particularly if the bot was being used by a lot of people. Fortunately, mine had the disable code in at the start, so when James asked me to pull the plug, it was easy to do.

It was on my suggestion that Casualty has put in the code to do the same, and I also suggested that he contact the admins to make sure they're OK with people using this program - I'm sure there still may be issues with numerous users doing pulls on the portal page every X seconds. Since Casualty has put in the disable option, I'm going to leave the thread open for now, but it may well be that if he meets disapproval from the admin team, you'll find your copy of the bot disabled and this thread locked. We'll see.

I thought this was going to be a very witty text infomercial on a fictional product, but nay. Just the thing for me too, being a stat whore.

I like this idea, but I'd rather do it the hardcore olskool way and keep watch on the Portal by myself. Nothing against your product - seriously, it's awesome, but I don't feel it's completely necessary for myself.

Great job though, Casualty. This is sure to help many young statwhores on their way to the top rank.

Which reminds me, I wonder if Afro will be using this? :P

Watching the Portal page... THAT'S OLKOOL MAN! Seriously, nothing beats those long nights with tea and cookies you spend B/Ping all the time.

And I thank you for that! I'm glad I can disable it in case it would hurt NG =P Thanks again.

If you sit in front of your computer for 12 hours, it'd happen 2,880 times, so yeah, it probably would if you aren't on there the whole day =P But the notice only pops up if there are new entries, remember.

At 3/18/07 10:16 AM, Aksumka wrote: The only thing that I don't like about this is where the slider shows up. I think bottom right would be a better place. If I was the stat whore I was, then I would probably be using it non stop. But since I slowed down with the b/p, I don't really have a need for it. But I will keep it installed.

The thing is, I already have tons of notices sliding up on the bottom right: MSN, AIM, WinAmp, Gmail and GTalk. I kinda learned to ignore them, but that would be fatal with Portal Guard. Thanks for the the comments, anyway!

I have NO idea. But it probably is, and it's probably Win 98 compatible too.

100% Visual basic indeed =) That's about the only language I know for programs, anyway..

Thankyou Casualty!

Hahaha my plan is working fine! I created another lifeless thing and soon everyone on the planet will be sitting inside on Newgrounds, trying to get worthless points! *Maniacal laughter and other evil stuff*

At 3/18/07 09:55 AM, Fim wrote: Isn't this cheating?

Actually, it isn't. It's only a program "staring" at the portal page instead of you... It only makes it easier.

I've got it to work now, thanks :). There was a weird glitch...

...if i moved the window just after it started, no error message, if i don't, it comes up with the "discontinued" error. Anyway, maybe something to check out :).

Seems to be working perfectly, very handy tool, nice and simple, although i think a better window screen would boost it a little. It less than .1% of my CPU, so it doesn't lag or anything :).

Out of interest, what was it made in?

Hmmm, that can't be the cause... Maybe it's just over now.

What do you mean, a better screen? What do you think I could add?

Visual Basic 6.

Here's a bug I found: when your IP address changes while the program's running, it will silently stop working (i.e., stop checking the portal) until you manually click on the "Check the Portal" button once (after that, it will work on its own again).

It's working now, but I need to open the program like three times before it starts working.

But yeah, it's pretty cool, it's actually motivating me to do b/p again. Not like e-stats matter, but w/e

If they disable it, then make it so that only your server pulls the HTML file and people can telnet in to your server on a special port and check for new submissions. This way seems to eliminate the bandwidth problem altogether.

Besides, I don't really have the patience to b/p like 20k entries.

This will make things much easier, especially during high bandwidth strains during the busy hours of NG.

Thank you very much for this neat piece of software.

Hmm, I have no clue on the way of solving that issue, but I think there aren't too many people changing their IP all the time, or are there? Thanks for posting about it, though.

You know you want those B/P points, so why refuse? =)

Actually, that will be the next step. liljim's idea was to make a script pull the Portal page every minute or so and then read from the server. Thanks for telling it again, though!

If you can read this text, you either have a slow modem, of there's something wrong with NG or this program...

What is wr0ng???

Not sure. I get disconnected by my ISP every 24 hours, and in fact, *all* ISPs in Germany do that - unless you get a "business" deal, of course, which is (naturally) aimed at companies and far too expensive for private individuals.

In any case, I can't really tell you how to fix it, either, but other programs manage to handle this just fine, so I suppose there must be some way to detect whether the computer's external IP has changed. :) Also, when you try to pull the portal on a non-existant interface, don't you get some sort of error that indicates that something went wrong?

Germany... Weird country IMO =P

I don't know about the IP thing, neither how to fix it. I'm really sorry, but this'll stay how it is for... always...
Also, if you pull the portal on a wrong interface or if the code changed, or anything similar, you just get 0 entries... I can't do anything about that either.
