I realize this is very much off topic of NG-related content, but I'm going to play the good samaritan for a moment and bring this up.
Since October 2000, Stanford University has been running a global study to find how proteins misfold. Misfolding proteins are believed to be the cause for many debilitating diseases such as Alszeimers, Parkinson's Disease, Mad Cow, and others.
By clicking here you can download a small program that assists in doing calculations to help the project. The program uses any idle (unused) processing power to assist in the calculations. This means you will *not* be hindered in any way by the program running.
I post this here due to the great number of visitors to this site and the assumption that, due to the often memory-intensive nature of Flash, many of the visitors and members have fast processors. Everyone who can help by downloading the small program and giving up unused space to further research is greatly appreciated for their efforts.
Thank you.

I can personally guarantee you that it is not a virus of any sort. It is off the main Stanford University webiste. However, I am not going to pressure you into participating in a study with voluntary particpants.
As a side note, the link only sends you to the main page of the Folding Proteins study. From there you can look at an FAQ, History, Download the program, or visit Stanford's main page. It does *not* automatically start the download.

The rain forest in Brazil supplies the world with roughly 70% of it's medicinal ingredients & one third of the planets oxygen. Unless they stop the insane amount of cutting, you will see its entire destruction within your lifetime.

I checked the link out, but I couldn't find what their goals for the calculating of protein folding will be used for. I'm not going to help someplace that withholds information, for all I know they're doing some dastardly scientific experiments. The Nazis uncovered a wealth of medical information, but I wouldn't have supported them.
And another thing, Mad Cow Disease wouldn't have come about if meat companies didn't feed rotting cow carcasses to cattle. Those companies do horrendous things; if I you want to prevent diseases you can cut down on or quit buying meat (which would help prevent diseases on a personal basis too).
Like someone mentioned earlier, I can help preserve the rainforest and KNOW I am going to help cure diseases, preserve fresh air, protect endangered species, et al.
I hope they're doing good for humanity, but you'll have to excuse my hesitant nature, I know what the majority of scientists are like.
