A friend of mine and I got into a dicussion on governmennts during war. My personal view is that in war times a fascist government would be better off than a democracy based government in war times. Does that make me fascist? Regardless he continues to accuse me of it. What do you think and ideal government for war would be like?

It depends on the type of war. If it is an all out war where the nation's own survival is at stake, then the best government is a military dictatorship, where military leaders can directly control the nation in order to win the war. The Roman Republic did this is times of crises. A temporary dictator was appointed and given total power in order to handle the threat, since a single person is vastly more efficient than a large, indecisive, legislative body.

I don't think you are necessarily a facist and you are correct, a facist government is better than a democracy during a war. Here are some reasons why I think the Facism would be better in that situation:
1) Facist governments use propaganda to a huge extent (more than ours) and public rallies to support troops.
2) Support against the war isn't tolerated, so the people will always be for the war effort and protestors would be "removed".
3) Conscription is more common and would not be hated to the extent such as that in a democracy.
4) Rationing in a Facism would not be attacked by its people during a time in war.
5) In a democracy, free speech and anti-war protests could demoralize the war effort.
6) Extension of an empire in a Facist government is supported by people to gain power (propaganda), whereas people in democracy are usually against forceful expansion.
7) People under a Facism would support the war under the thought they would gain wealth by defeating other nations.
I don't support a lot of these points myself, as I do believe there are advantages to democratic war governments too (more taxation). I suppose there are good points to both of the governments, though.

I also remembered this one:
Dictatorship is efficient because you don't need to wait for months for a bill to pass in the legislature.

i have to say that the fascist govt is the most efficient govt... also during the times of Camelot, nobody called King Arthur a dictator right? nope... he was the benevolent king
so under a rule of 1 person with all the power, the right person can make the country work...

And Ill say it again
In times of war
A monarch's your friend.
Of course in times of peace, beauracracies are great for ass-kissing and appeasement.....

Because 2,000 years of "For God so loved the world" doesn't trump 1.2 million years of "Survival of the Fittest."

In war, a fashist government is the best. Someone needs to make decisions. It doesntr make you a fashist and it doesnt make you evil.

I suppose facism might be good for winning a war but if it *does* win the war then you're stuck with a peacetime facist government that'll just declare war all over again.
So in essence, you could win the war but then you're stuck with a bunch of facists running the country who won't be too keen on reverting back to a democracy.
Just a hypothesis. Anybody care to provide an example of that or the opposite?

I think in a fascist government the decision are easier to take because there is only one man to lead, but fascist is very bad because it's anti-democratic. In a fascist government the population does not have right to vote.

funny...the game Civiliaztion 3 had it so that democracy users would be punished from extended war times, since people would protest and your supply lines would stop.....it seems Mr. Sid Meier seems to agree that a fascist government is better in war times....

i'm the friend that lorddrax is reffering to. this all started in art class one day when we were trying to find out who's more right wing (i, of course, was).
we got onto the subject of war-time situations. he thinks that a facist government would be better because it emphasizes mandatory military service, basically a perpetual draft.
the issue wasn't about democracy. that wasn't the point that i was defending. i'll never defend democracy. i was for a republican government being the best type of government in war time (peace time, as well).
there's nothing, NOTHING, like the heart of a voluntere.
a draft puts people on the war front that didn't want to be there in the first place. morale is low, and experience is through the floor.
a strictly voluntere military, on the other hand, possesses only those who wish to be there, ones who purposefully put their lives at stake for the sake of the lives of others.

Giving someone special powers in wartime isn't a good idea: just look what happened in star wars when they gave palpatine emergency powers!

... or those who need the college money or like guns more than pussy.
But anyway... Wow. That entire post reeks of over-generalizations based on a lazy skim over a high-school history text.
Were you saying that a republican government would never, ever draft and just rely on "voluntere[s]" in time of war?
