"Robert Richards, of the Pennsylvania Centre for the First Amendment, said it "seemed a waste of government resources to pass resolutions that have no impact. It's just a feel-good move for the New York city council"
Whoever this guy is I agree completley with what the said right there. It will probably just make people say it even more.

So basically they aren't going to enforce this law, but they made it one anyway just to lead by example.
I mean I know it's a racist word and it shouldn't be used, but COME ONE! I assume that they are going to fine some rap songs or something like that, but I highly doubt it.
In fact I'm not even sure how this is going to be enforced.
In retrospect this seems to be a dumb law.

I'm not sure they're allowed to do that without some liberal ranting about "free speech" and probably tearing the law down, besides even black people I know don't care if you say it anymore you know? They'll just laugh at you, unless you say it with hatred (which you can tell if you do by the way) then you'll probably get into some sort of conflict. Anyways I think they just passed that law to keep the blacks from complainin and just tomake themselves feel better and more important.

I know this is an obvious question, but isn't that a blatant violation of freedom of speech?

That's pathetic. And here I was thinking of moving to New York City some day. I mean...That's basically freedom of speach flushed down the toilet! (not that I go around calling people the "n" word anyway.)

It could be argued that since the modern use of this word is mainly within the black community that this law was infact passed to oppress the black people

yep.
also, aren't blacks pretty much the only ones who say that? so wouldn't it be specifically aimed at black people?

Thats the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.
Yay, Obama won. Let's thank his supporters:
-The compliant mainstream media for their pro-Obama propaganda.
-Black Panthers for their intimidation of voters.

when i see this, it brings back memories of a database i looked up once that contained hundreds or racial slurs, how come only the "n" word gets banned? there are more than enough racial slurs vs blacks, the "n" word is meaningless when i can just call em any of the other rather large list of racial slurs people have come up with over the years.
Personally i think this goes in line with things like black history month and affirmative action, we all know about that though, preferential treatment. why don't they ban the word "cracker"
I'm not trying to be racist, I'm just showing how banning the "n" word is a worthless gesture and a moot point. also this is stepping all over the 1st ammendment.
I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

Will Blacks stop calling each other the word? I don't think so.
If Blacks are punished for their use of the word under this law (which I doubt), I'm sure they'll bitch about it. Not trying to be an Uncle Tom, just stating facts and extrapolating data.

I suppose it's just that it's a little more acceptable for a black guy to say it to a black then someone of another race to say it to a black guy.

That's stupid; the word was losing it's effect and thus, was becoming less insulting.
That's a breach of freedom. Black people call each other n*gg*rs to joke around... It's not even a swear word... In fact in the 1930s n*gg*r just meant "black person;" it was analogous to the word "negro" which we use today.
I think this move was pretty racist... It further separates the blacks and the whites. When you try to get rid of racist-oriented concepts under law, you create a hypocrisy that is left unresolved - And that creates tension, and consequently, separation between the parties involved.

I see, since banning a word completely and utterly erases all the meaning behind the word. God forbid people realize that there are about a million other racial slurs for black people with the same, or worse, connotations.
Think you're pretty clever...

My god . . . regardless or not the "n" word is banned in New York City, I bet you one day the officals would get booted out of office for violating "Freedom of Speech" perhaps arrested if they go too far.
Taken for granted some officals just go way too over their heads and some of them just should be fired from their offices for something not worth violating.

I really think it's just more bullshit and limiting of city/state rights. This move will actually make people hate Blacks even more, and it can be seen as a mere experiment towards big government.

So doesn't that mean that blacks can't use the "N" word also? I know that this won't go well with a large population of black men or women that use it as a salutation. And what exactly are the consequences of the use of the "N" word anyways?
