As usual, the media is overreacting. I can't say I'm too worried about a disease that thus far has only 4,000 reported cases worldwide and only about a 4% fatality rate.
If the disease continues to spread, and gets to be a problem here in the States, I might be a little worried, but it has by no means reached epidemic proportions yet. Should something be done to stop the spread of the disease? Yes. Am I worried? No.

"Sars virus attacks state control of the news"
Just to clarify, currently THERE IS NO CURE, IT IS MUTATING, IT WILL GET STRONGER, ITS KILLING ABOUT 5% (and i've heard no talk yet of that magical word "ANTI-BODY")
..as for the political ramifications; world tourism, world trade, racism, discrimination, isolation, draconian punitive measures, leading to ressesion, crime, poverty, fright, flight, and you guessed it.. (downward spiral)
I'm convinced it's here to stay koz it's a effectively a virulent cold virus - but the attitude is; Well it's only killing the poor, the old, the vulnerable, the young, or "those dumb foreigners" ..similar was the attitude towards AIDS.
maybe it will actually kill all the world's BLASÉ ppl? let's hope so!

Don't worry about anyone travelling to Toronto.
There have been 139 cases of SARS in the entire Greater Toronto Area, an area of more than 3,000,000 (3 million) people. The area covers some several thousand square kilometres, and each and every person who has even come into breif contact with an infected person is quarantined in hospital or in home.
There is little chance of contracting it.
And little chance of fatality.

So far, no. For a disease that has a fatality rate of about 4%, why should I be worried about a potential outbreak? It's hardly Ebola, Black Death or Spanish Flu, so it's just the latest fearmongering tool.
Worse still, there's this worry about it, yet on Wednesday it was casually reported that, oh yes, 3000 children die of Malaria each year in Africa. Why not worry about that?

Because they would have died of starvation anyways, they need a war on terrorism in Africa.

I would say more like a really bad flu, and old people and babies die of the flu all the time, though mainly in less developed nations, such as, I dont know, maybe china? 5% is really bad for the flu, but its still no yellow fever.

actually there is already a topic on sars. This is what i wrote in it;Im from canada and im more scared of getting AIDS or HIV than getting SARS. Though it is a problem, the media has once again over-inflated the severity of this, kinda like the west-nile virus or the anthrax "scare" after 9-11. Do you really want to know how mediated this is? If your look at the name, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, Severe and Acute are synonyms. But if there synonyms how come there both there you ask? Simple SARS sounds alot better rthan SRS or ARS. check out my hedgehog;

Worse still, it was 3,000 children PER DAY, or over 1 MILLION per year. They said that current anti-malarial medicine isn't working against stronger strains, but malaria is spread by mosquitos, not by humans.
That's why Aids and Sars are getting more of the worlds attention. And Sars is NEW and spread to 26 countries in just a few weeks, so that's something to keep in mind as the death rate from Sars continues to increase over the next few years....?!..??!..!!!

Hmm. I'm not sure why this is in the Politics section, but I guess it doesn't matter.
Anyway, I talked to my Mom about SARS the other day (she's an RN, Registered Nurse) and she told me that the threat is pretty exagerated. The disease mostly kills just the old, very young, or those with weak immune systems. Which is basically the same as a really bad flu going around.
Also, she said those masks (like shown in that pic) actually don't work. They stop protecting you from disease after about 30 minutes due to becoming damp from your body's natural respiration.
Anyway, that's the information I've gotten out of her. Hope it helps.

it's in the polly section koz they just shut down all theatres and internet cafes in Beijing... (difficult to disinfect is the excuse ;)
How about the Asian country now refusing entry of passengers from Toronto? These are major some issues..

Just to warn you, the questions of "Where did SARS originate from?" have begun to surface. Naturally, it originated just like all these other "superbugs": In a lab somehwere in Maryland...

Anyone else find it kinda funny (in a sick way) that more people die of 'flu every year than SARS, yet if you phone in sick you get treated like a whining kid, and expected back within a couple of days? Now, ring up and say you have a slight case of SARS, and you're guaranteed at least a month free to do whatever you want, such as reading on the front page of the Daily Telegraph that SARS was first found in a shoe box in a bombed-out office in Umm-Qasr.
Anyone care to tell me how a building can be destroyed, yet a shoebox with a piece of paper saying George Galloway is in the pay of Saddam (Basra, see another post), or al-Qu'ida (JAND CAN'T YOU ALL AGREE ON ONE FUCKING SPELLING OF IT BY NOW?!?) being linked to Saddam's regeime (Bagdhad), despite having vastly conflicting beliefs and cultures, or the fact the regeime of Saddam and al-WHATEVER were opposed?

As Armando Iannucci put it: "Don't 'severe' and 'accute' mean the exact same thing? Isn't it called that just so it won't be referred to as 'ARS' on the news?"
