I live in the belt buckle of the Bible Belt.
Most atheists I know are quiet about their beliefs, only by asking them did I ever figure out that they are atheists.
They sure aren't here on the internet.
The ones that are going to go out of their way to let you know they are atheists are generally going to be assholes, it's that simple.
This is true, the atheist that don't rub their faith in my face wouldn't be so obnoxious, but this still doesn't rectify the fact the vast majority of people are religions bastards. Post any religious topic dealing with God in the general forum and I assure you that 5/10 posts there will be posted just to piss off the religious demograph.
I don't hate atheist for their lack of faith in a higher power, I hate most of them for being rotten bastards.
And one more thing; you are sort of an asshole yourself. I don't like ad hominem, but really, you never seem too hesitant to call opponents stupid, or idiots, or morons.
I am an asshole about politics, not about something as sacred to a person as their religion.
Could it not be that they were rude because you were rude first?
I'm rude to someone when they post utter bullshit. As I stated before, I don't tolerate bullshit.
I think you would agree that if someone insults you to your face, you are justified in insulting them back.
Nor did I they couldn't defend themselves. Just don't expect for me to give someone a pat and a hug when they cite Michael Moore as a legitimate source of info or something else asinine.
After reading many of your posts, I think it would be very reasonable to assume that you were simply an ass to them in the first place, and they got rude and defensive in return.
Yes, I am an ass to dumbshits. I am not an ass about someone's belief of what will happen to them in eternity. There's no comparison between petty-politics and a person's religion.
And even if that is not the case; 9 out of 10 being rude to you does not justify you being rude to 10 out of 10 in return.
An eye for an eye, mate.
I'm not comparing you to a racist, but that is similar in function to the "most blacks I've met are dumb, therefore blacks are dumb" logic that racists use.
People can'te help whether they're born with mediocre intelligence, a person can help whether they're an asshole or spout bullshit. Also, when I insult I don't flamebait and do it merely to spurn the person, I do it because that's what I think about them and how they shouldn't post stupidity.

Just thinking of atheists immediately brings to mind thoughts of pessimism and overskepticism (if that's a real word). Is it so damn hard to believe in something good, even if you don't have proof? Anyways, it's probably wrong of me to think that just when the word is brought up, but still, most atheists are like that. I think the only "good" atheism is one where people think that we don't need the fear of an invisible higher power to be decent people, and it's the mentality of "life's a bitch, then you die" that pisses me off.

By being rude to all atheists because some atheists have been rude to you before is just taking part in a vicious cycle of intolerance. I can't say how your opponent will react to your being peaceful, but I will say that you should not expect them to be peaceful with you when you refuse to be peaceful with them. You need to decide if you are going sit around and wait for them to break the cycle, or if you are going to take a stand, swallow your pride, and break the cycle yourself, and maybe your foes will come around then.

You'd still be suprised, sir.

Some may be. It's easy to hear the militant ones and think of them over the quiet ones, as the quiet ones are... well... quiet about it.

I've noticed that a lot of people who post things to piss off Christians aren't atheists, they just aren't Christians.
I don't hate atheist for their lack of faith in a higher power, I hate most of them for being rotten bastards.
Have you met most of them though? Note the "them". I couldn't say we, because I don't consider myself as part of a group even though I am atheist. "We" simply don't believe in any form of deity, we aren't necessarily rotten bastards.
Don't be so quick to generalize.
I am an asshole about politics, not about something as sacred to a person as their religion.
Fair enough.

That's the problem, it has such a negative connotation to it. Atheism is a very broad catagory.
Is it so damn hard to believe in something good, even if you don't have proof?
That depends on what you consider good.

That's exactly it. I believe it was Nietzsche that said that we have evolved enough as a peoples to be moral (though he didn't agree with many things considerred "moral"), ethical, good people without the fear of a higher power. Some people are going to be pessemistic no matter what; I know several Christians with the "life's a bitch, then you die" mentality.

I hate it when that bitch at the end says that "Atheists are not strong," first of all, I'm not atheist, but I can tell you right now. Atheists are FUCKING STRONG (mentally). They are strong enough to resist the temptation of religion and go; "We have one life and then I will never exist again after I die." Now that is hard to do. I don't think any Christian would be prepared to come to terms with such a statement. I think Christians are the weak ones... Especially since they are a vast majority. I think Atheists are so strong; I mean, they're surrounded by over 95% religious people, how can they just not "give in???" it is far easier to believe that "we go to heaven after we die." Than not. Atheists go against the flow, therefore, they cannot possibly be called "weak."

This isn't a religious debate. I bring this to your attention because as a moderate atheist (I don't believe in any form of diety, but I respect your right to and do not encourage atheism) this upsets me. I understand some radical atheists are complete douchebags. I don't like them any more than you do. But please, where's the love?
Agreed. Christians are supposed to abide by Jesus' teachings, right? It seems to me that whenever I'm bothered by Christians (I've never been bothered by someone who isn't Christian, like a Jewish person or a Muslim), I have done nothing to warrant it. That's not to say that I don't meet many Christians who are nice, non-pushy people. They just seem to be rare little gems. I'm just tired of people who say that they follow Christ and His teachings, and then go and treat other people like shit for believing something different.

And your strong to admit it. Some christians are christians because they want to be good and give to charaty, because they actually have evaluated the religion and believe it. Some christians are christians because their parents told them to be one. Extreme christianity and bias against athiests go hand in hand, some people are just too weak to admit it. They live off what they thought in the first place, they hate bieng wrong more than anything else. I respect the first kind, the ones that do it of their own will, as much as I do humanists (in case you haven't guessed, that is what I am).

You mean the people who made a point of letting you know you're an atheist.
Much like the people who make a point of informing people they belong to this religion or that are often annoying assholes.
It's not about atheists being annoying, it's about people being so wrapped up in their convictions that they spray everyone else with them too.
