Hmmm, this is a boy scout lounge, but considering the few amount of girls on the BBS, I wouldn't mind. I personally don't mind girl scouts, in fact I feel sorry for them that thier importance doesnt go as far as boy scouts do. Wait for TheThing to see if he'll let you in.

I was in scouts, and had a terrible time. BUT. I believe it's a great organization. My "fellow" scouts are just human and sometimes humans like to bully the meek. Oh well. I certainly would put my kids through scouts. Besides, they have to learn outdoor skills, just incase they're on a business trip and the plane crashes. I love Boy Scouts for teaching me these skills. Just for that reason alone! Plus I enjoy hiking and enviromental respect.
Oh on this note, Scouts has a history with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, (the Congressional Youth Award, in America). It's a good self esteem booster to take part in it. Looks good on a resume. The good benifits like personal growth outweights the possibility that some jerk members might enjoy picking on the odd ball (in this case me).

The problem with that award is that it takes a lot of time and effort to get. I'm just too darn busy to get something like that. The most I'll be getting (I think) is the bronze palm which I should be getting my scout master conference for this wednesday.

I started when i was 8 years old and now i am sixteen, so i've been a scout for nearly 8 years.
I totally love this hobby, It's practically my whole life!
Oh, yeah i don't know if this subject has already been discussed, but is anyone coming to the World Jamboree this summer?
I am.

I started at 11 and have been a scout since. I am really lazy so that is why I am still 2nd Class. Going to get to 1st Class before I go to Nothern Teir in July though. Anyway, I'm here (yay me).

Yes it is. I could ask to change it to just "Scout Lounge" instead of "Boy '' '' " for you. Make you feel more comfortable.

Same, although Scouts has taken more a backseat now that I'm growing up. But it's still pretty important and fun.

I wanted to, but for $3,000, I don't think so. But I'm trying to sign up for Philmont for this year. I heard that was a great time.

Meh, unless I'm going on a camping trip, the meetings seem to be a burden to me. Mainly because of dealing with the little scouts. I wish we were allowed to like tazer them or sumthing cuz the don't shut up or calm down and it's really hard teaching a group of them first aid.
Whenever i go on a camping trip I'm always thinking "man, I don't want to go" but I always do it anyways and am happy I did so cuz it's nice to be with nature and get the nice exercise. I ge this special connection with nature whenever I'm on a nice camping trip. I always feel different. If I had the time and money, I'd just rent out a camp site to just to enjoy the scenary and meditate under the trees.

Yeah, but I don't really do anything for the OA. I pay the dues and wear the patch and sometimes the sash. I'll start participating, but when I have more time. I doubt I'll be doing any ordeals anytime soon. Mine was a bitch; had to clear like 2 miles of a fire break of brush, then a bitch said that it wasn't good enough in some spots.

My troops kinda sucks because we have all older kids who don't want to camp anymore and alot of young kids who need to learn how to not die in the woods.

I wouldn't trust any of our young ones to run the troop. I know what they say is funny to them and their friends, but personally it scares me and probably a lot of the adults and other older kids.

>> But the purpose of Merit badges isn't to see how many you can get, but to try and get the kids to try diffrent things in life (hobbies), To find their Niche. like with all those merit badges and 50 is alot (but one must remember Captain Archer is an imaginary person), one would probaly a very very severe case of ADD. Jumping from one activity to another. Because I lived in a poor neighborhood as a kid, activities were rather limited. But I have seen it done before, some scout with a sash of little badges. and the chief scout award (life scouts in America? I'm not sure how it works).
The purpose of Scouts is to also mold the person into a productive member of the Fold (society). to indocrinate them. That's why many kids tend to drop out. Well in my case I was bullied out.
So anyways. I credit my basic understanding of outdoor skills to scouts. (that way I won't necessiarly die right away I survived a plane crash..... I'd just take longer to die because I'm still a city slicker.
Bronze Palm? Is that like the Bronze Chain? (there were 3 diffrent chain levels), one could wear like one of those weird sholder tasels. I think Bronze was at 6 badges. 12 at Silver and gold was some astronomically high number.
I got mine, in Essay writing, speaking fluent Chinese, Music (as I played the piano (but since forgotten how to play), and outdoor (as we went on camps to learn how to do our survive, aka beat each other with sticks pretending we were ninja turtles (this was wayyyy back in the 90s and we were like 13ish), and how to operate a gun (I have a really shitty aim, Like the target would be 60% dead, but I'm no sniper..... I like the smell of gun powder, we fired those weird rifles that you had to use a bolt action and when the bullet was spent, the heat and air pressure made the casing pop out! That was kinda fun actually. Of Course Leroy Brown (yes that's his name, like the song, and he's bad and black, note he wasn't bad because he was black, he was bad because he was a jerk). Kept on trying to throw me into the wall and shit, so I kept on doing a senario of what would happen if I went crazy with the Gun. But though against it, because I have 1)shitty aim 2) even if I did shoot Scouter Kevin in his fat stomach, I wouldn't get away in time as I too was fat. 3)too nervious. But the though went over and over in my mind. I wonder what would have happened...... if I did.
But there are some good memories of scouts, actually no..... no there wasn't. But I was mostly at fault for being a timid, borring proto emo. But enough about the depressing stuff. Scouts is fun, scouts does work.... I managed to become a venture, and went on world wide service-hiking trips with young adults like myself who were more mature. AKA get pissed drunk at MOOTS(these international gatherings of Venture scouts. Found a love for hiking, which thankfullly I'm in Calgary, get to do alot! And went on a few hunting trips. Deer meat equals MMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! (on hunting trips up to the Yukon), where many people from the states partake. We even went on this weird trip where you take a armoured truck, a high powered truck and drive on rocky mountain areas. It has roll cages and other protective gears. It's the land version of white water rafting. That's fun man!
And I think I smoked dope my first time out in scouts (back as a kid). so it wasn't all that bad. I wonder what happened to the rest of the scout mates?

You know, if you read the sentence around it, it would say "No flaming; I know the second I post this, some immature bastard will say "Boy Scouts are gay fags". I will have none of that.". I'm not making that up. I copied it from the first post.
If you want to share your opinion about the Boy Scouts, then make a topic in general, where you can get away with a little flaming. Here, I specifically said no flaming, and you come in here to flame. I know I didn't say it, but I'm contacting a mod. I don't care if they don't care. Hey guys! My first post on the NG BBS ever, even though I've had an account for months! Oo
Anyways, I am 17 years old, a former SPL of Troop 1 Acton. I am a Life Scout working on my Eagle Project, which will be a peace garden outside the church that I attend. I am a Brotherhood member in the regional OA, and have worked as staff at my local camp for several years.
Some of my personal favorite times have been hiking up several steep mountains in the Appalachian Mountain Trail....in pouring rain, as well as helping lead the Isaac Davis Camporee which recognizes Captain Isaac Davis, a minuteman in Acton who was the first to die in the Revolutionary War. And what do you know, the next Isaac Davis Camporee is only a few days away!
My favorite accomplishment was instating what we now call the Darkwood Derby in our troop. Basically, we have a Pinewood Derby race, in which the cars have no size or weight lmits, as long as the cars do not damage the track or interfere with other cars. We also allow propulsion, with the same guidelines. The winning car this year had a powerful fan on the back that made a significant difference, outstrippling other cars and reaching the end before others were halfway done!
Anyways, I'm looking forwards to posting more on the BBS and interacting with all of the people around here!
See ya soon!
~Lord Hiro
