What's up with the instrumentation these days?

Instrumentation, meaning the actual SOUND of the instrument, not the pitch or notes or progressions, can make or break an awesome song. When I listen to most of the trance songs on NG, I hear a ton of presets (which I'll admit, I've used too), a lack of proper FX, and an overall rushed approach to instrumentation.

Instrumentation is JUST AS IMPORTANT as the rest of the piece! Don't rush it! It takes time to properly craft your sound. Needless to say, what sounds good varies from person to person, so craft it to your own liking and tastes. However, no matter if someone likes or dislikes your song- it's easy to tell when it's rushed.

Craft your sound NG! I know you guys have MASSIVE sound in you!

Very true. This advice is certainly not limited to Trance artists. Thumbs up Kilkila!

No I'm not!
It's a good reminder for EVERYONE , who wants to create music..
It's very hard to make that an instrument "sounds" just as we want it..that's all patience and experience

As true as this is, maybe some people like the sound that those "improper" effects are creating on those sounds. And if the artist likes the sound, I see nothing wrong with it.

Glad you mentioned that. Like I said in my original post, each person should craft their sound to their own personal tastes. If it's meant to sound that way, cool. ^_^

What I'm addressing in this post is the tendency to throw things together without regard to the sound. It is easy to tell when someone threw together FX or instruments to try and make a song. In addition, it's also easy to tell when something is crafted to sound a specific way.

Yeah. Random effects are weak and effortless.

In addition, it's also easy to tell when something is crafted to sound a specific way.

Sometimes. I can't count the amounts of times that I've created effects/synths from scratch and I get some guy telling me that what I'm using is a preset and I should stop using it.

I agree sometimes it does get annoying hearing presets, though I am guilty for that on the songs I could give a fuck less about, mainly when I just screw around to make one. The main thing that REALLY REALLY gets to me, is the same sytrus presets. EVERYONE USES FUCKING SYTRUS!!!!!

Yeah that's pretty much it =) Oh and Vanguard presets are annoying too because that is one of the easiest VST's to make it have it's own unique sound. Vanguard is an easy to use, fucking awesome VST for making your own synths or at least customizing presets to actually have a unique sound, and I think people should actually realize that instead of being completely lazy, though everyone is guilty of laziness =P

I have Reason. Making patches and instuments is fun! And having the ability to use others refills and stuff is sometimes awesome too!

I agree, we should make our stuff a little better, but hey, keep on discussing, I dont care, since I dont have this problem ^_^.

Everyone has had their preset days. I know the only reason why I decided to make my own was because I love tweaking everything to get it right. I dont think most people have the patience or knowledge to do such.

That's why I dont hate my discography, I never used presets, save a few parts in a song.
