Indeed, the Maya kingdom itself had already degenerated into small, competing factions prior to the arrival of Europeans. Chichén Itzá was abandoned a couple of centuries before that, in the early 1200's. While the Europeans did encounter and fight Mayans, and there are still Mayans today, the Mayan civilization associated with Chichén Itzá and other similar landmarks had, for all intents and purposes, died out before the arrival of Europeans.
So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we had the key...
