Hey Casualty... the new graphical level+rankbadge frontpage is totally AWESOME. When I have cool stats in any or all of my accounts or one of them levels up (gfox went from 33 to 34 about a week ago, and 3 days later gfoxclock went from 36 to 37), I'm taking a quick .png screenshot of my three accounts together in the last 5 logs.
IT ROCKS! Seriously... better layout than our actual USERPAGES right now. Maybe once they allow us to configure the userpages to display what we want to where we want to... but for now, NG LOG IS WHERE IT'S AT FOR SCREENSHOTS, YO.
Check out the one below, from late Thursday night/early Friday morning, after gfoxclock's level up.

It would be great, yeah. I think I mentioned it to him in the "NG Log is back" thread a few weeks ago, and I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones thinking it (or saying it to him, for that matter #;-}>).
Might not be possible at all, or else it might be possible but highly time consuming, in which case I wouldn't expect you to even bother with it =)
Probably the second option. As it says in the message on the frontpage he's got up about it now... maybe in 1 year... or 5. MAYBE. #;-}>
We can hope. :::crosses fingers:::

"Time on NG: 0 year(s), 0 month(s) and 25 day(s) (=26 days)"
so, the total amount of days seems to be counted incorrect. maybe theres a "-1" missing... or it is just a rounding error.
im not sure if this is the case here, but it might explain it.
Most computer calculations use 360? Please... provide some examples.
Because I find it very hard to believe that's the case when 365 is a bad enough approximation for the true daycount in a year... 360 is absolutely horrible. I wouldn't even call it an estimation for anything beyond one year.

Egad. That's truly horrific. Now.... I don't think I've ever posted as large a pic as that on NG BBS... hell, I never even used the "post larger than normal user picsize" pic option when I was still a mod and it was available... but is it just me or ... did it shrink my pic even though it was within the 599x700 it says it needs to be?
I had to crop off 4 pixels on either side of the pic, as the way I take my .png screenies of NG Log's last 5 logs now yields a 708x498 file... so it was 700x498 instead, but the preview said it was 699x496, which was strange to begin with, come to think of it...
Oh well, maybe it was just converting the .png to a .gif. I'll try .jpg. And if that doesn't make it look better... well, you get the idea.
EGAD... this time the preview below says 599x426, but that's a lie. Why is NG BBS shrinkinating me pics? Oh wells. ;_;

Hahaha, thanks! Yeah, the userpages aren't really in a good shapes... I think they don't put enough emphasis on the stats which are, after all, the main reason I come to Newgrounds, after the BBS (sometimes).
I suppose I could improve it even more, though I wouldn't know how... That's why I created this topic! Even though I must admit I came up with the awesome FP layout myself after putting everything back in shape for the redesign :P

Ehh... (scrolls down) Ahh!

That's right, I'll just see if I ever find that time and courage. As I said it will require me to recode the whole page to act as if nothing had changed, which will probably be a bitch to find out. Or maybe God himself will come down and help me by making me find an old file I had lost somewhere on my hard disk!
We can hope. :::crosses fingers:::
Indeed, you can hope. Or you can recode the 800 lines of calculations yourself, because that WOULD help me... A lot.

Converting a .png image to a .gif image is never really good, as .png provide the best picture quality for stuff like sprites and computer generated stuff (I think).
Converting to .jpg gives the result you see here... Because .jpg is actually a format for photos, but I suppose you knew that.
EGAD... this time the preview below says 599x426, but that's a lie. Why is NG BBS shrinkinating me pics? Oh wells. ;_;
Egad??? Lol, I never heard this expression before! Then again, I've only been in GB during 8 days of my whole life :P

Like the number of B/P you get in one week, but how many Blam or saves do you get that week. I hope you understand.

banks, for example... they say, that every month has 30 days (yes, even february). It's a so called "banmk month" (sorry, don't know if there's a special english word for that). and a year has 12 months. and 30*12=360. so a year has 360 days ;) .
but i think its just used for calculations, because it's easier to calculate with 30/360 days instead of with 28,29*,30,31/365,366* days.
*in case of a leap year.

You'll probably be having problems with NG Log right now.
You have probably seen the code 28 errors on top of the page, which means "Device Full". Therefor, I am supposing Denvish is out of disk space at his web host. Another thing that might suggest this is the fact that his upload system isn't working anymore. There, you get errors about writing files, which also means the server is full.
Stats are logged by detecting your user ID in sessions, and using that to retrieve correct stats. But as the server is full, it's impossible to register new sessions!
You can still log your stats though, because a while ago I set up a system allowing to GET user IDs from the url. So just visit http://nglog.denvish.net/stats.php?id=YO URNGLOGID to log your stats. If you don't know your ID, just visit the users page, find your name and click the number of times you logged your stats.
I'll try to find Denvish and to fix this. Though he should be away until Sunday :(

Nice planing on the stats from the url idea. Also, I saw your request where the Shoutbox was going to be. Perhaps the space could show the user with next largest amount of points in each category and the difference between their stats and yours.
User Id (Difreance between the two)
for: Blams, Saves, Total B/P points, Experience, Reviews, Batting Avg, Audio Tracks, Total stats, exc.
Lastly, not to be pushy but has there been any progress on runtime 9 error?

You know how your looking for ideas for that shoutbox, well I have a few ideas.
1- Have a list of different achievements. For example have the top 10 users who have the highest weekly b/p pace or similar achievements.
2- Maybe you could have the UJ submission list there. I am not sure if its possible but could you grab all of the current UJ submissions and put them in a box like that. Its hard to put a picture in your head but if its possible basically have the UJ part of the portal in that box. Can you do that?
3- Have a suggestion box on NG log itself. You know like a box that you put in an idea press submit and it sends it to your email.
4- A goals input section. Basically LIKE the shoutbox except only that user can write in it and leave goals for the week. You could even make it automatic like the LUL thing. And they type in a number and then you choose from the list of possible sections (b/p, posts, exp) and then it saves it. Once the week is over it will have text up the top saying something like "You hoped to make it to 13,500 b/p points today. You were 24 points off, you made a total of 265 points this week"
Tell me what you think!
Do you have 2,500+ b/p points? Are you looking for an intelligent club where you can discuss NG related and unrelated topics? Join the Elite Guard Barracks!

There's two and half "problems" with your idea:
The first thing is that the log in page should stay personal. It's not about comparing stats with others, or about showcasing the highest stats in that category.
Another problem is the strain this would put on the operations. Finding and retrieving the user with the highest stats in a category every time someone visits the page is just way too much. I know, I could set up a complicated cron job and stuff, but even if I'd succeed in doing that, see problem one.
And third thing, there's barely any space there for something like that...
It was a good idea, worth a try, but no... :)
Lastly, not to be pushy but has there been any progress on runtime 9 error?
I haven't been trying to find it lately, as you can see I've been more busy with NG Log, which is still my primary concern.
At 8/12/07 02:09 AM, Sterockicy wrote: You know how your looking for ideas for that shoutbox, well I have a few ideas.
Awesome!
1- Have a list of different achievements. For example have the top 10 users who have the highest weekly b/p pace or similar achievements.
As I told the previous guy, the log in page is about your own stats, and is not made for showcase other people's stats. Plus, this would again require a huge amount of time to find and calculate.
2- Maybe you could have the UJ submission list there. I am not sure if its possible but could you grab all of the current UJ submissions and put them in a box like that. Its hard to put a picture in your head but if its possible basically have the UJ part of the portal in that box. Can you do that?
Pointless. The UJ submissions can be found on Newgrounds itself, and you can download Portal Guard if you want notifications about new entries.
3- Have a suggestion box on NG log itself. You know like a box that you put in an idea press submit and it sends it to your email.
That's not a bad idea, though this thread works pretty well, and there's something else about that box... SPAM! I probably would get hundreds of messages saying "asdf" or "doodoo".
4- A goals input section. Basically LIKE the shoutbox except only that user can write in it and leave goals for the week. You could even make it automatic like the LUL thing. And they type in a number and then you choose from the list of possible sections (b/p, posts, exp) and then it saves it. That's by far the best idea of all four, but there's just one problem here, though a quite huge one.
This is incredibly complex to set up!
I'd need other database tables, I'd need to make sure the user inputs OK stuff, I'd need to write tons of scripts for every stat there is, and tons of more things.
Oh, and something else I didn't think about. How would I make sure only the real user sets his goals? I have no technique to really identify users, as there are no passwords. And I don't think those passwords are ever coming back...
Tell me what you think!
I did, I did. I'm terribly sorry I had to point out all the stuff that would NOT work, and I want to thank you for the time and effort you probably put in coming up with these ideas.
Other suggestions I heard for the box, by PM:
A "Bytesize" style flash (see NG front page) about stat whores and stats in general. Quite a good idea Masterswordman had there. I'll let you people come up with a few more ideas, and I also want you to tell me what you think about the ideas you've heard before (in this thread, for instance)!

I don't even know where to look in Excel to find where it estimates the days in a year, nor have I ever had reason to use such a feature, since I know the estimate is 365.25....
But... if that's true, even about only certain year-versions of Excel... that makes me sad to be an Excel user. ;_;

It's all the banks' fault, eh? Eh. Shouldn't surprise me, then.
360 is only better than 372, then. Which is how many days you'd come up with if you used a 31 day month by default. But gee, what, the bankers can't manage to use decimals. You could at least make every bank month 30.5 days exactly, which would come out to 366 days, which is damned close to 365.25, at least.

You can imagine my disappointement when it says the WRONG rank instead of lt general :(
Suggestion: A section on the main page that shows your progress against others. For example, if I have 1000 posts and the person one rank ahead of me has 1,002 and the person behind me has 977, then there would be a bit like this:
Posts: 2 behind, 23 ahead.
Then the next day, lets say I'm on 1020, person ahead is on 1025 and behind is 1000 it would change to show how much I caught up/fell behind by.
Posts: 5 behind (-3), 20 ahead (+3).

Not only would the stats you see be really inaccurate, but it would also be extremely hard to make, and running that script would be hard as well...
It was a good idea, but I'm afraid it won't be happening... Thanks for your contribution, though!
Ahwell, it would have been nice but probably isn't worth the effort.

Oh yeah, I forgot to post this. I thought of a neat idea while I was in the shower one night. I thought it would be cool to have a stat that would show the percentage of total possible B/P points you've acquired out of everything ever submitted to the portal. So now it would be somewhere around 30000/400000 for me or about 7.5%

I have to say, that I find this rather useless. If you are really interested in it, you can always calculate it yourself (like you did).

Yeah, hopefully there will be some other stats, soon. Like posts, or Blams without Saves and Saves without Blams, etc.

The entire site is useless, and it would be cool to see how much of a percentage you have gained/lost daily without having to calculate it and keep track of it yourself. I support this extremely useless idea.

If it is calculated on a daily basis, then I can see the fun in it. But not if it is just calculated for all flash ever submitted. Because then the percentage would just go down and down (you can't get any points for flashes that already passed judgement, can you?).
But as I said: If it is calculated on a daily basis (as in: "You Blammed 50% of the flashes submitted today!"), then it can be quite funny ;) .
