Britain and France nearly united

It turns out that in 1956, with all the shit flying in the Suez Canal and Algeria, French Prime Minister Guy Mollet suggested that Britain and France unite as one country.

I think this would have been great. Britain and France united as one would have been a very powerful force on the world stage. We would be an economic giant, have an immensely powerful military (First person to make a comment about surrendering gets shot!) and our diplomatic clout could have meant that we would no longer just pander to America's whims all the time.

What does everyone else think of this idea?

We don't have real sovereignty anyway. This country's increasingly irrelevant and is just a client state of America. Uniting with France wouldn't have been losing sovereignty so much, it would have been pooling it with into a partnership of equals.

Whether or not we have much sovereignty in the first place is irrelevant. We'd be losing a lot more if we were to unite with France, and I'd die before I allow Britain to unite with France.

In what way is America Europe's bitch? Sure, they complain and stuff, but Europe doesn't seem to hold as much political clout here as we do across the pond.
