Indeed. Such blatant trolling seems a little out of character. You'd be a fool to think atheists are only atheists because they're rebelling against their parents and I hope Mick isn't that ill-informed. Or discriminatory.

Last post to this thread, but fuck the lot of you.
It's easy to dismiss any decision made in that age group by "rebellion". Uhm, that also happens to be the age when you're usually intrduced to history beyond the past few centuries, biology beyond cutting up frogs and physics beyond boiling water in a beaker.
And it's also around the time when you've been allready informed that creatures like the Jolly Red Roof Lurker (santa) and Sugar Poop Hopper (Easter bunny) don't exist.

I don't have a childhood faith, even though my family is sorta religious I never believed in their beliefs. When they gave me books about Jesus and so on I allways said that it was fairy tales. When I was at a Christian camp and they told us about what Jesus did for us I said that that can't be true, because he have never existed. I reacted to the logical flaws as I never believed in ghosts, magic or anything like that. I've never seen it in real life, only in movies and fairy tales, so already then I took the conclution (7-8 years) that God(s) didn't exist. (Before that time they never spoke about religion)
So I've been an Atheist from the start, which is actually a bit sad. Because I do in fact envy the religious, they all seem so happy.

None. Never indoctrinated at all, really. I can't actually remember getting taught RE in first school, although I'm sure we did and the priest came in and we sang Christian songs and all that shizzle.
Me dad's quite religious I suppose, but not rigirously so and he never taught me what to believe. Mam isn't, I don't think.
I can't actually remember having a concious though bout God either, or praying (except for the Lord's prayer in assemply). But I'm certain I did believe that there was a god of some sort.
2. At what age did you tun to atheism?
Meh, there was no one point in my life where I thought "Wait just a fucking minute there, this stuff can't be true", it was just gradual, to the point where I can't remember.
3. Have you explored other religions?
Not particularly, no.

Yeah, do people think you need to know all the specifics of evolutionary biology, quantum physics, and the Big Bang, to dismiss ideas such as Heaven and prayer? Well, you don't. 11-14 is the age when you start thinking by yourself and dismissing ideas that you only had 'faith' in to begin with isn't some amazing rebellious action.

Yeah I know, but it's usually slightly more subtle or clever or less werewolf-bite-style retarded trolling. That's why I said 'blatant' trolling, and qualified it by saying it was only 'a little' out of character.

1. What religion did you first believe in?
I was brought up a christian, not a catholic, but one of them "new" evangelical happy clappy ones, I suppose as that's not classed as catholic you'd call it protestant but it was very informal and "hip".
2. At what age did you tun to atheism?
I'd been picking flaws in it since I was about 11, I stopped believing completly at 12, but I only got out of going to church every sunday when I was 13 because I got sick of being forced to go and ran out of the service half way through and got the bus home.
3. Have you explored other religions?
Fuck no, the theory of a god is ridiclous, we are not important as human beings, we're a mash of blood, bone and electrical impulses. The theory of a god like us is delugional bullshit, it's a comfort blanket for those who are scared of dying and living a meaningless life.

I would like research further into other religions, but at present I have not.
At the monuent I do believe in a more powerful spirtual force, but I do not know what it is. I would like to develop this spirtual side further. I am probably not an atheist but an agnostic. IAlthough I am very opposed to religion I think it is used to control people and cause nothing but conflict.

I don't say religious people are all idiots or are too big of a pussy to rebel against their folks or anything like that. I might belittle their beliefs, but I don't belittle the followers, and I don't say religious people are all only religious because they have an unpleasant character trait, like your claiming all atheists are teenage faux-rebels.

And how can you tell? You might not find their explanations satisfactory, but no atheist on this website has made a post where they have indicated the reason they became an atheist is because it annoys their parents. In fact, that is a reason why a lot of people are closet atheists - because it would annoy their parents. If you have any evidence for this claim other than thought processes in your head, I'd love to hear it, since I've heard that atheists are just rebelling millions of times, but never from anyone like a sociologist or psychologist and never from anyone other than a defensive religious person going on the offence.
So yeah, seriously. Enlighten me.
And I hope I proved satisfactorily that you were trolling somewhat.

At 1/17/07 07:02 PM, shohaib wrote: 1. What religion did you first believe in?
Okay there is a flaw in your premise. Your questionnaire is based around the idea that all atheists were once religious. While there is a trend, that simply isn't true in all cases. Take me for instance; I have never been "religious" per se, since my mum isn't evangelical and my dad's an atheist. The only deeply religious relatives are in Canada, and I don't visit them that often.
2. At what age did you tun to atheism?
That's a difficult question to answer...when I was about ten I think, I started thinking the whole concept of Christianity (being that, at the time, it was the only religion I'd been exposed to) was ridiculous, which was primarily because I went to a partially religious primary school. They'd basically tell the odd heart-warming story about god destroying every animal in existence because a few pissed him off, and I was like "wtf is this bullshit, if he loves us then why..." etc. It was never an act of rebellion, more of an in-built rationalism which I suppose I had been raised with. When I became more freethinking, I became an agnostic, thinking that God's existence was impossible to prove either way. However, I started thinking this to be an unsatisfying position to be in, and kept wondering.
I toyed with ignosticism for a while (no, not agnosticism, ignosticism; wiki it). Then I figured that that particular position was also unsatisfying. Now, I'm a hardened atheist and sceptic. In terms of ages, I couldn't be specific; but it's something like:
10 - atheist
12 - agnostic
14 - ignostic
15 - atheist
3. Have you explored other religions?
I've explored, or at least attempted to explore all sorts...however, I got bored of reading holy texts after reading the Bible, attempting the Qu'ran and the Satanic Bible. I have to say, the best read was probably the Satanic Bible, but LaVey sort of refuted himself when he pretty much said Satanism was no different from secular humanism, apart from in the respect that Satanism had a specific doctrine. I don't like doctrine.
