you know there never had to have been a civil war, because slavery was slowly being illegalized through diplomacy (laws passed to stop importation of slaves, mason-dixon line etc). However, lincoln wanted immediate freedom for slaves and started a war that created more hate for blacks than ever before, adding another 120 years to black oppression via racism. What could have been ended in 50 years now existed for 120 more. But of course lincoln won the civil war, and as we all know, the winners write the history books. ( I try to be as evil as possible)

You have no idea how wrong you are, the cilvil war was because of the south secceeding from the union, the emancipation declaration happened after the war started and lincoln was reluctant to do it.

you do know Lincoln was a racist. and by him staying around would have never garauntee that the country would be any better than it did. the whole Reconstruction would not have changed the mind-set of the south by any means. amd we also know that a legal version of slavery in the form of share-cropping was instituted in the south because the blacks didn't know how to do anything else but be a farmer. in otherwords, nothing would have changed. i don't know how old you are, and i don't know how well versed you are in American history, but i think you should look into the Civil War and all things involved in and around it. especially look at the reason behind the implementation of the Emancipation Proclaimation.

Let me clarify a few things.

Lincoln did express his opposition to the institution of slavery (though he did not support political equality for blacks). But, at least initially, that was not what the Civil War was about. The Civil War started with several sectional differences between North and South (one of which, of course, was slavery). Because of Lincoln's anti-slavery views, Southern states did not even put his name on the ballot for the election of 1860. Yet, he still won the election with the support of only the Northern states. This was the final outrage for the Southern states, who proceeded to secede from the Union. Lincoln, who was initially motivated by the need to preserve the Union, started building an army to crush the Rebellion, which the South saw as an act of aggression. Then came Fort Sumter. Later on, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as a purely strategic move. He saw preserving the Union as the top priority, and he once said that if he could preserve the Union by freeing the slaves, he would, and if he could preserve the Union by keeping slavery alive, he would.

So, the argument that Lincoln was a bad president for invading the South to free the slaves right away is pretty much incorrect.

Worst Presidents... copied and pasted from the Best Presidents thread, because the topic of worst Presidents came up in there:

1. LBJ (bet you can't guess why!)
2. William Henry Harrison (ran under no platform whatsoever, was going to be a puppet for the Whig party leadership, turned election into a circus, caught pneumonia while making an overly long inauguration speech, and proceeded to die in 30 days)
3. Grant (great general, but his cabinet was one of the most corrupt ever, and he did nothing about it)
4. Oh hell, I'll go ahead and throw Clinton in. His domestic policy admittedly wasn't TOO bad (though a Republican congress helped keep him in line there), but I can't say much about a guy who only fought terrorism whenever it would help distract from his personal scandals, and even then he put in minimal effort (one or two cruise missiles, and then go home).

1.Lyndon Baines Johnson: Whose social programs were bankrupting the government and skyrocketing taxes while they did much less to help than they had promised and of course for getting us so deeply involved in Vietnam.

2.William Jefferson Clinton: Who shamed the office of the president enacted several military actions without congressional approval to provide a distraction from the trouble his dick had gotten him in and who lied under oath to a court of law and to the American people and who continued to hold on to the office.

3.John Adams: Not a horrible president on most issues however the Alien and Sedition acts where perhaps the most fascist piece of legislation passed in the history of the United States. Essentially the act allowed for the arrest of anyone who criticized the President or his actions. Thankfully Thomas Jefferson and his associates disposed of that particular piece of legislation.

4.Ulysses S. Grant: A great general who had no bussiness being in politics. He was totally controlled by the Radical Republicans who proceeded to totally botch the Reconstruction of the South, thus leading North/South hatred on into the 20th century and leaving the south without an important function in the modern economy.

5.Jimmy Carter: Carter was a complete idiot. He was a good human being but his idealism created numerous misguided policies.

Granted that Clinton might have done something he wasnt suppose to do, but he is still one of the best presidents of this decade - he helped this country rebound from war time and unemployment dropped dramatically - lowest of the lowest - created more jobs and helped the country here - took some time from the world and helped better the USA and that was great - there were many other presidents that did worse - Lincoln only freed the slaves cause if he did not it was have been another civil war, he was pressured - Hoover i heard he wore womens clothing - Nixon i believed did the worse and nothing he could or would have done to get himself out of what he had done - but at the top of the charts the of the greatest was FDR - he did wonders for this country when we needed it the most.............The Depression, The Dust Bowl & World War 2.......nuff said

No, he didn't. The Gulf War was hardly a drain on the economy, and had no negative effects, if anything, it increased output. Not to mention, Clinton caused more meaningless war than any President short of LBJ.

No, he isn't the chairman of the Fed, he has nothing to do with the economy. Economy prosperity is affected by people who understand economics, this is not the Presidents job. Did clinton walk down to the factory and tell them to hire John Q? No, he didn't, so don't say he created jobs, or helped the economy. Alan Greenspan was the reason the economy did well.

I never said that lincoln invaded the south to free the slaves, I meant he was a shitty diplomat and things wouldnt have gotten that far if were a better president. we all know that the south seceded because they believed they had the support of rich english textile manufacturers, and the "union" was taxing the shit out of cotton with export duties to save that cotton for use in northern textile factories. If it were not for the fact the north had a shitload more soldiers and a huge navy capable of blockading the southern ports, the south could have won (yeah yeah weak argument, I know, but the southerners believed they had the right to secede, and they thought that was enough). Southern soldiers did have homefield advantage, and they did INVENT the art of sniping from camoflaged positions. If it wasnt for the blockades, who knows?

Slavery was not the major reason for the civil war, I agree, but it was the major moral divisive issue between north and south.
