although ive only done one animation i think starting with sticks is a good idea go though LOTS of tutorials make little experimental things then when you start your first flash take time and get it right

Set your FPS (frames per second) higher.

MS Paint. Jokingjokingjoking... :)
They practise a lot and have a good eye for color schemes. Oh, and they also plan what their animations will look like beforehand.

I personally don't like sticks. Though good for practising character anatomy and movement, most people's animations with sticks don't look as good as other forms of animation.

i agree i think fully animated flash is alot better than sticks but it is good practise once you have the hang of animating try fully animated im making one now
animating actually pretty easy The only real trouble is knowing that the next frame should coexist witht the last and not be a seperate idea. Don't think of fbf animation as one drawing at a time in the planning out stage, think of it as a playing movie and a sequence. What should the movement of the arm look like as a whole.
Most n00bs mistake it as a dot to dot craft. Like it you make the first and last frame look good. It will look good throughout. What is the key is the magic that happens in between the dots.
The color issue is fairly easy too. Depends on what type of color your looking for. Are you talking about Adam Phillips kind of artwork. That's alot about color mixer and the fact that he doesn't use black to outline the character make them more realistic. It's all about knowing how color and light interacts with shapes, sizes, angles, highlights, and shadows.
Layers
Masks
Proper gradient use
I'm talking like from Ray 3-Introduction, mis-using gradient is just...ughh
Remember, layers are your friends.
And so are movieclips. Learn about them, you can tween a FBF character by tweening an MC with FBF frames inside it.

All the best animators use Graphic symbols. Far easier to use.

I like to use movie clips... so you can tell the difference between a tween and an object in the library. I don't see much difference, but MCs are good for games (and I'm a crap ASer). I don't think there is much of a difference between a graphic symbol and a movie clip.

Graphic symbols are tied to the main timeline, and the animation inside the graphic symbol can be viewed in the main timeline. VERY USEFUL. Also, MC's tend to fail to work in avi files (some say they work but I have yet to seen this)
MC's are good for using actionscript and are necessary for games.
one simple thing to improve your art trementously is shading. find some shading tuts on NG (theres tons)
