I wouldn't call scifi movies "hippie" movies.
Definitely wasn't shitty either.
Yes I am going to see it on friday. It looks like it has a very excellent plot.
This was a good movie? I don't mean this in an offensive way, but I'm honestly surprised, I thought the plot was horrible and impractical.
If there is 1 fertile female, that means that all humans must come from her. As far as I could get from the commercial, she didn't have a husband so therefore they're likely going to end up continually forcing her into pregnancies to try to counteract the death tolls.
With everyone already middle aged, it won't take too long for the current population to die off outright and have the only people left be the new mother and her children. By then, even with each female in said family reproducing (a bit of a disgusting thought, forcing pregnancies upon a family), you would have maybe a couple dozen people and that's it. After all infertile people die out, you'll be left with the original family and you'll basically have to have inbreeding for the species to survive.
And this is assuming they'll even let her live. I haven't seen the movie, but from the commercial I can tell that there are a bunch of people who don't want this baby to be born, I doubt they'll give up just because the mother had already given birth. Even if she were put in isolation, it brings me back to the point made in the above paragraph: We'd have a hell of a time just trying to keep the population up. This isn't even considering potential disease or genetic defects.
Apparently everyone says its a good movie, even the critics, but I find the main idea completely insane. I simply can't force myself to watch something so...ridiculous.
Someone once asked me why I call myself Unimportant. Simple, I said. As a nihilist, that's what I see everyone and everything as. In the end, we are all Unimportant.

So.... You're trashing it before you've even seen it? It's not about what happens after she has the baby and gets to safety, it's about her struggle to do just that. She's not expected to repopulate the whole planet, it's just a miracle that someone had a baby. It means there is hope for the human population! She's not going to be used as breeding stock, at least I would hope not.
I found the plot to be completely realistic, they didn't have crazy robots and stuff which defines most futurist movies. With people messing around with all sorts of radioactive things, and harmful rays and all that, why couldn't women be infertile? We're not indestructible and we are subject to the environment too.
I loved it, I was on edge the whole movie, and that one scene with alllll the soliders and the baby and they just look at it. It was one of the most beautiful scenes in a movie that I have ever seen. Like Jordy said, we'll probably go see it again.
Seems interesting. When is it released in Australia?

I like how his first sentence started off with saying how he thought the plot was horrible or whatever.

Exactly. Why would one assume she's the only fertile woman on the planet? It's the story of one of the first discoveries of fertility after an 18 hiatus with the overarching theme of the collapse of modern ways (which is not implied to be an effect of the infertility at all).

The projection of technology was pretty damned good, I agree. The biggest difference you see between right now and in the movie is in the moving ads in the city, the HUD-style graphics and alarms in the cars, the cars themselves and some of the architecture. Also, I liked the new-age music in the old guy's house (Jasper, I think) and how the radio was mentioning "a classic hit from wayyyy back in two thousand and THREE!"

They also mentioned a flu pandemic. However, they stressed the mystery in the cause of the infertility, which is a lot spookier than a cut and dry explaination.

Next week, I hope. <3

When I first saw the poster for the movie, I got kind of creeped. For one reason... word play. They call it Children of "Men". They say on the poster that all women are infertile. And that there is like no hope, but then they saw that all of that can change in a heartbeat. It isn't until you see a preview of the movie that you learn that men AREN'T having babies. It sounds weird, but word play can do that to you.

Haha yeah I can see how people could confuse that by just seeing the title.

It doesn't have a point retard, and it's not 2 hours long.
I saw the commercials for this one, but in Canada it was just recently released, it was playing exclusivly at the paramount theatre for the longest time.
It looks pretty cool, but I cant wait for 300 to come out that movie is gonna rock!

Yeah I was blown away when I saw that during the previews.
SPOILER
I saw this movie last night with my girlfriend and still have extremely mixed feelings about it that I can't quite understand. Yes it was a good movie, but it was one of those horribly sad good movies that dissapoint the ADD audiences of america. So for those who havn't seen it yet, if you fit into that group, it might not be for you.
Of course, to truly understand and appreciate the movie, like any other movie you had to be willing to come to terms with the actual themes, and ignore some of the special effects. I think it was the way people were treated when they died that really just has be going round and round on this movie, and this is why:
It didn't matter that any of them died.
Yes they are human, but they aren't. They can't have children, when they die its all over, whether its ten years from the point in the film or that instant. So when people died, their deaths only mattered if they were doing something at the time that was some how going to matter in the long run. When there is no future, it doesn't matter. Its possilbly the most depressing thing I've ever thought about because of a movie.
But then, they do have their reasons. They help the baby and all of that, but the end goal doesn't seem to matter. Every main character dies. Every single one of them except for the baby, given a whole 2 minutes of screen time, and the mother. They finally get to the boat, and the main character keels over. Almost meaningless death, accept he provided the way. But in the end, the only hope is this vauge "human project" which picks them up in the boat "tommorow". Lots of literary themes pervade this eary final seen, where the woman is left floating all alone on the ocean with a baby girl about to be picked up.
Finally the movie cuts, displays CHILDREN OF MEN on the screen and plays a bunch of child noises (laughing, playing, gigling, screaming, crying, etc.). Obviously the themes are right there, but in the end, without having any drawn conclusions as to what actually happens to the characters, the only possible point to the movie is left here:
Do the right thing, not for yourself, but for the good of the individual at stake regardless of politics, religion, pride, money... etc. And beyond that, love your children and do everything you can for them. You'll die along the way, but every one dies eventually, so do it the right way.
This movie emotionally dumps on people like other movies of its kind. Munich comes to mind, and many of the other horrible apocalyptic good movies where man is down to nothing.
I don't know what to think of it, but it got me thinking. :(
I saw it a few months ago and it kicked my ass. The comparison to half-life is right on. The whole film follows one guy, he's in every single scene and you discover the plot as he does.
The ping pong ball bit was cool. And Michael Caine is a stoner. Watch it!!!!

I'm going to see it this weekend. It looks like a very thought-provoking movie.

I saw some commercials for that; I thought it looked really good.
I don't know if I'll be seeing it first thing tomorrow because I have a lot of work to do before midterm exams, but I'm sure I'll check it out after exam week.

It's been out in the UK for ages, but I haven't seen it. My friend has, and says it's good... so I might check it out although it's not on my 'to do' list.
The director did a film several years ago called "Y tu Mama Tambien" which is awesome, by the way. At least I think it's the same director. Ah well.
I saw and I think it's like my second favorite movie this year next to "Pan's Labyrinth," Probably would've been number one if Pan's Labyrinth hadn't been released. It was just too good.
