Whatever happened to to each his own or live and let live?
Unfortunately, religion is negatively harming society, even as we speak, so a philosophy of "live and let live" as you say, is impractical and frankly, irresponsible.
Let's just say for a moment that religion had never existed. That none of us had ever suddenly decided to worship a big jolly omnipotent man in the sky.
*snap* There goes war in the middle east.
*snap* There goes 50% of all wars that have ever happened.
*snap* There goes the crusades.
*snap* There goes the holocaust (No jews = No holocaust).
*snap* There goes Christian inhibitions about scientific advancement.
*snap* There goes Darfur, Rwanda, religiously-inspired ethnic genocides.
*snap* There goes AIDS in Africa (Christian leaders refusing to help protect Africans on the basis that AIDS=Homosexuality)
*snap* There goes societies where people who are born gay are ostracized simply by virtue of genetic abberration.
*snap* There goes pedophillic priests preying on unsuspecting youngsters/ scarring them both physically and mentally for the rest of their lives.
*snap* There goes the entire Spanish Inquisition
I could go on, but I won't. The point is, at this point we'd be a lot better off without religion than we currently are WITH religion. I'm not saying No Religion = No problems. I'm just saying that its impossible to deny that in the long run, religion hasn't been a good thing for mankind.
If we let ourselves be governed by what can be proven, as opposed to what we simply "believe" to be true, we would know more deeply, the meaning of our lives. In fact, we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now...
