Geez.

You just HAD to name the RPGs that are still at full price.

Like, again? But of course.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

If you want a bargain game try Eternal Sonata.

I have no personal experience with the game but it's coming out on PS3 and a mate is gonna buy it.

Actually, my brother has that game for his PS3.

So I could probably play that some time.

Been playing Valkyria Chronicles, hard as hell but it's interesting. Got stuck at the desert and now I'm just kind of grinding. The visuals and music are great, and so is the gameplay, but the game can be unnecessarily frustrating because of the aiming, The Kloden woods in particular gave me trouble on that.

JUST THOUGHT I'D PEOPLE IN HERE KNOW THAT, 'KAY?!

I have no idea why people have been calling that game a role-playing game.

You don't even level up characters in it. You can only level up classes.

It's about as much a role-playing game as God of War is a role playing game.

Yeah, those are RPG elements, regardless if you don't actually level up specific characters. You still grind, you still earn exp and money, you use those for better equipment.

I thought that's what happened in RPG's, last time I checked. So I have no idea where you came across that idea.

In case you haven't realised, every single game under the sun has 'RPG elements.'

That don't make it no RPG.

If I want to make a more appropriate comparison, it's about as much an RPG as Warcraft III is an RPG.

That's cool, brah.

I don't understand what were hoping to accomplish by suddenly bringing up something pointless, it's not like I am going to stop calling it an RPG just because you personally think it isn't. But how about we leave it at "I think Valkyria Chronicles is a cool game, but not without it's flaws"?

I'm not trying to change what anyone believes. I know that's impossible over the internet.

However, I just think that the term 'RPG' has really become too loose. I used to be able to easily identify what an RPG was, but now every single game I see claims to have RPG elements. The old linear story and exploration based grindfests that I have grown to love over the years seem to be going out of fashion. And that really disappoints me.

Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based strategy game. The RPG elements of it are a very minor part of the overall game. Sure you level up your classes, but that's not an important part of it. I've not had to do any grinding in that game, since the whole game relies on the strategy you use. The levels your classes are at rank a distant second in deciding whether or not you'll win a given match.

But how about we leave it at "I think Valkyria Chronicles is a cool game, but not without it's flaws"?

I think Valkyria Chronicles is a great game. It's one of the best I've played.

The story and dialogue aren't amazing and the characters are a little cliche, but the actual gameplay is great.

It's like Worms if it was 3D (I refuse to acknowledge Worms 3D's existence, thank you very much), a little more realistic, and set in Wold Wor Too.

I play DnD, the original kind of RPG. You know, tthe kind where you acctually PLAY a ROLE.
A lot of today' video game RPGs shouldn't really be called RPGs. Just cause you can choose between Magic, Fighting, and Archery, doesn't mean its an RPG.
Fable is awesome btw.

It's good and interesting the first time around, but boring on further playthroughs.

Yes.

I got really bored of it very quickly (comparatively speaking, of course), and edited all my stats in the console so that I could jump ridiculously high and run ridiculously fast.

And when the fun of that wore off, I rushed through to the end of the game.

The Assassin's guild missions were good, but the rest were a little dull.

And the world was so boring. So boring. Not like Fallout 3 at all.

Man, the RPG club should be more popular. WHAT HAPPENED TO RPGS?

I saw Lost Odyssey second-hand for cheap today, so I decided to pick it up.

I've played about an hour and a half of it, and so far I don't know what to think of it.

First of all, it really takes me back to the old days of RPGs, and that brings up some Nostalgia in me. The game's style seems to be a cross between Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII with less colour, and with some ridiculous machinery thrown in.

The ridiculous machinery is really ridiculous.

The opening cutscene was simultaneously badass, and hilarious. You've got your opening scene of Fellowship of the Ring, but the bad guys throw giant swords instead of spears, and everyone's wearing these crazy outfits that remind me of Solt and Peppor from Chrono Cross. And then after a little while, these crazy steam-powered robots come hulking in and just awkwardly swing all over the place. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the craziness of it all.

Then Kain comes in and does some serious kickassery.

The battles are really basic traditional, but I like the cinematic way in which they're presented. Instead of just showing the character running up and slashing at the enemy, the camera goes through five different camera angles while the character slashes like he's competing for gold in the Olympic ribbon event.

The voice acting seems fine.

What I find really intriguing is the Thousand Years of Dreams that have popped up a couple of times. They're tiny short stories written by Kiyoshi Shigematsu, an award winning Japanese writer who I hadn't heard of until playing this game. Although they could definitely have benefited from a better translation, they still managed to inspire some emotion inside the dark, dank, dead, depths of the vile rotting husk that I call a soul.

Usually I would say that I could just read a novel if I wanted to read a novel, but by virtue of playing as Kain, I inherently feel attached to him as a character. Because I am playing as him, I want to find out more about why he's such a distant prick, and because I find out about his past in some decently written, but poorly translated, stories I want to play as him more. It works pretty well.

I really don't like the character designs, especially the design of what I expect will become the villain of the game. He's got blond hair, shaved around the back and sides and leaving only the top intact. And he has a terrible black goatee, and the biggest eyebrows I've seen since that character on FLCL.

I'll have to play more of it to see how it goes, but it's looking up right now.

I move him with my thumbs. He needs my guidance, though I am not the only one.

Hey guys. I'm not heavily into RPG's, but I did get into Oblivion, and I occasionally play GuildWars. Also, I am currently downloading Runes of Magic to try it out. Does anyone here know if it is any good? I heard it plays just like WoW, but somewhat better.

It's been a while hasn't it?
Tales of Updates!

Tales of Vesperia for the PS3 (Japan) was released on the 17th, it sold just about double it did it's American 360 release, high reviews ensue.

To refresh you the enhanced PS3 port includes.

* Full voice acting
* Tie-ins with Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike
* New playable character (Patty Fleur)
* Flynn as a fully customizable, playable character(permanent after Aurnion)
* Repede and Flynn as selectable on-screen avatars
* New mini-games (Racing mini-game for Repede)
* New cutscenes
* New subplots
* New main game quests
* New sidequests
* New songs
* New towns
* Remodeled towns
* New dungeons
* New bosses (including the Sword Dancer, Don Whitehorse, and Clint/Tison/Nan)
* Boss fight replays at Nam Cobanda Isle (in an area called the Door of Memories)
* New Overlimit Levels up to 8
* New Hi Ougi/Mystic Artes (including a dual Mystic Arte with Yuri and Flynn)
* New Artes
* New Skills
* New Equipment
* A Key Item known as the "Artes Ball," which allows characters to assign up to 8 Artes to the left stick, and 8 Arte Shortcuts to the right stick for a new maximum of 16 Artes.
* New Costumes (Including costumes based on other Tales characters and Sgt. Frog)
* New Skits
* A scene-skip feature
* Added Team Arena
* Connectivity with Tales of VS
* Pre-Order Bonus (Abyss character costumes for Yuri, Flynn, and Estelle)
* New Coliseum battles and modes (Cameo Team, Clint/Tison/Nan/Karol, Schwann Brigade, and etc)

Unfortunately no Stateside announcements have been made, lets hope it comes along.

In addition Tales of VS was release in the prior summer in Japan, high quality for a PSP game according to recent reviews, however unlike Tales of Vesperia PS3, Tales of VS is very likely to come stateside, because Namco has registered the title "Tales of VS" as an American trademark.
No NA release yet however.

And finally Tales of Graces, planned for a holiday release in japan is going well in production, intros on the Battle system and new world map navigation can be found at the main site or (lets face it) Youtube.

I'm personally loving it all for Graces.

Jaa mata.

I haven't been posting here a lot, but that's not a reason to count it as dead..

Yeah.

Recently I've been playing more PSP, which means translates to "I've been playing more RPG lately".

These, more precisely: FF Dissidia, Crisis Core, Disgaea 2, Jeanne D'Arc, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

Though I wouldn't call Monster Hunter a fullblown RPG, it does have the elements.
...like 99% of other games..

Crisis Core is good, though haven't been playing it ata frequent rate, hopefully it'll get better.
Dissidia is okay, I guess. It would help if I knew most of the characters.
Jeanne D'Arc is good, enjoying the story, though the fights seem to last to long or seem to slow, maybe it's just me.
MHFU is better than the first part, everything is expained in painful detail, good for beginners.

I've also started playing Grandia. Again.

Ah, that reminds me, has anyone played The Last Remnant? It came out on XBOX 360 and for computer, I grabbed the computer release.
Apart from having an odd menu (everything has the XBOX controls showing, could've been ported better) it has a seemingly cliche storyline from the start but developes a story that stands, albeit wobbly, on its own feet.
The graphics are delicious, though having the shadows on Maximum kills the framerate. Not that that matters much.
The voices are good, though the prince who you meet later sounds a bit ... odd.

The fights are done in rounds, so all you do is sit back and put in the commands that are available and watch. It's not timebased, so you can take your time and think ahead.

Sounds like a good game, right?
Right, which is why I don't understand why I haven't played it for weeks. It should have me gripped. But it hasn't. Same thing for thosewho I know who own the game. Rather odd.
It feels like there's something missing, can't point out what though.

Anyway, that should be enough to get things rolling again.

Agreed, lets put some life back into this thing.

Seeing as my university has a games room with both Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia, I was thinking of doing a run-through of one of them. Since I have already finished Tales of Symphonia, I was gonna start a file on Vesperia. Also, I might have to take my memory card so I can defeat Sword Dancer V3... I may have to ask some of the other students for assistance in spamming spells with Colette and Raine...

I saw a video on Youtube playing Colette with 1 HP and killing Sword Dancer.
Try Vesperia if you haven't yet, it sounds good.

Not quite RPG related but I'll post it here either way, I got back into Fallout 3 recently and looked if there were some good mods around.

Yeah, there are. A lot of mods, I think I've added around 100 new weapons and a few extra locations, quite nifty.
And for boredom's sake I installed a few weapons just to mess around with, like a Flamer that shoots Mini Nukes, a Dog Launcher and a dozen of other silly weapons.
