The victim, Alex Carman, 15, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries to the right upper cheek.

Investigators say the Riverridge H.S. student found a 380 bullet on the side of a road, brought it home and put it into a vice. He apparently struck the the primer end of the bullet with a metal screw, causing it to fire.

They say a 22-caliber bullet pierced with a screw was also found near the vice. On the ground was a hammer and a small pool of blood.

Investigators say it "appears Alex placed the bullet in the vice, hammered a screw into the primer causing the bullet to explode."

He put it into the vice so it was gripped tightly as if it were in a chamber, then he hit it with the hammer so he could try and fire it off. He neglected to note, however, that without a chamber to direct it, a bullet will stray off in any direction, in this case, right into his face.

This couldn't have been by accident. He obviously knew that he was gonna fire it somewhere. But since there is no chamber, or barrel on the vice, like there is on a regular gun, the bullet just strayed off. He probably just wanted to fool around and shoot a wall or floor or something.
