Pokie mum who killed son to be held for assessment
A woman who killed her baby son by leaving him locked in a hot car while she played poker machines appears set to spend several days in custody despite a judge recommending she be immediately entitled to parole.
The woman, 41-year-old Jie Hua Yu, was Friday sentenced to a four-year prison term following her conviction for the manslaughter of her 19-month-old son, Brian.
However, Supreme Court judge, Justice Bernard Teague, did not fix a non-parole term.
The judge said that arrangement gave Yu an "immediate entitlement" for parole.
A spokesman for the Adult Parole Board said later today that the case had been considered, but no decision had been made.
The spokesman said that a report on the case was being sought from Community Correctional Services and that the board members would also need to further interview Yu.
He said it was unlikely that Yu would be freed before next week.
Yu, of Kelvin Drive, Ferntree Gully, in Melbourne's east, pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of her infant son, who died from brain damage and organ failure cause by heatstroke.
Yu left her son for about two-and-a-half hours in an unshaded part of the Ferntree Gully Hotel carpark on February 16 last year while she gambled with $150 she had taken from the wallet of her sleeping husband.
She was convicted by a jury.

It sickens me to think that this woman may use Gambling Addiction as an excuse to go unpunished, Those who do things under any other addiction have to face their punishment.

Yes, that pisses me off as well. No matter what addiction or affliction you have, you are still responsible for your actions. Whether you're drunk, high, insane, angry, anxious... it's still your resposibility!

Something similar happened here in Dallas. A woman went to work and left her child in the car because she "forgot" to drop it off at day care. I don't know her trial/conviction status.
