"AC*DC made me do it, I swear!"

Ok, so, who else thinks that is the worste "excuse" for commiting murder? Does rock 'n roll really influence people to murder, or young people to commit suicide... or even go on a killing spree (such as Collumbine)? Personlly, I believe those people are just naturally fucked up, and looking for a suitable excuse to get the off the hook... and we all know how infamous rock music is for its "evil" innuendos. Bah...

I think talk about kids being so impressionable, and should be sheltered from this stuff is crap.

Parents shelter their children too much, anyway. There is a whole world out there, and when you hide it from the kiddies, they meet it sooner or later, and are not ready for it.

I'm not advocating letting your 5-yr old watch hardcore porn, but you shouldn't try and keep all of the crap out there from them. Kids are impressionable. That's why you should spend more time trying to give them values and morals than 'protecting' them.

The absolute worst excuse AND defense was the so-called "Twinkie Defense" that was used by Dan White, a city supervisor of San Francisco, for the murder of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. He claimed that he was depressed, began eating junk food which deepened his depression and this somehow excused his murders. This was testified to by psychiatrist Martin Blinder and it actually got hima successful diminished capacity plea which meant the charge was dropped form murder to manslaughter. He did seven years and eight months in prison.

to loosely quote from eminem

'do the lyrics load and cock the rifle too???'

despite my dislike for him he has a point... GUESS WHAT people do things regardless if they hear it or not... playing a video game does not put the fucking gun in someone's hand and cause them to shoot people... its the problem with the world 'its someone elses fault...' always a fucking problem... until people start taking responsibility for their own problems... until then MORE twinkie defenses...

which i must say is fucking genius... albeit helping to destroy the worlds society but FUCKING genius nonetheless

rock dowant have very many violent lyrics. if you named me any rock band and a vilent line or lines from thier song. i could name you 14 lines for which happiness and love and grovy stuff were expressed. except from slipknot

i listen to rock music for approximately 5-6 hours non-continuous every day. it doesnt make me a nutter. i happen to be a perfectly normal boy of above average intelligance who can sing quite well. maybe the rock lyrics helped me with that?

There was an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" about punishing kids, and it turns out that while Frank (Ray and Robert's father) set all the rules and thought he was the disciplinarian, all he did was make the boys try to get around the rules, which they did. The moral was that all you can do is teach your kids values, morals, and ethics and hope they grow up to be decent people.

When I was 13 and about to start high school, my mother took away my cassette collection, which consisted of albums by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica... but also U2, Weird Al, and Harry Connick Jr. I was starting to "act up" and it must have been the music. All that did was make me a better sneak... I hoarded my lunch money and bought Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, and Faith No More. I hid them in shoe boxes in the closet and listened to them when she wasn't home. I was almost 16 when I got those tapes back and was allowed to buy more.

She failed to realize that most 13 year old girls have trouble with their mothers. She mistook puberty for rebellion caused by "bad" music.

Now my brother's 11 and she doesn't know that he listens to Eminem at friends' houses. All she hears from his room are songs from the NOW! cd's.

I believe that all people are intrinsically evil. I also believe that people like to listen to like minded individuals. therefore people will listen to evil music, and do evil things. this is why gangsta rap and death/suicide metal are the prevalent musical choices. however, it is the evil inside, and not its expression that is the problem, although it sure doesnt help.

Music is a very influential aspect in the lives of many people. Many turn to music to find comfort in the words or to feel relaxed or enraged by the sound. People need to think for themselves and stop blaming their mistakes on others. Music artists, especially in rock, project an image of rebellion against authority. Marilyn Mason for instance is described as an image of devil worshiping and promiscuous sexual actives. He talks of death and violence. I personally think he is awesome and his personality fascinates me because he doesn’t give a fuck. He does what he wants and what he does to people is consensual. He encourages individuality in my eyes. Weak minded people who have been beaten down by society and its standards might not have the metal strength to realize that Mason might not even do all the things he sings about or that he is basically just a symbol of freedom of speech and individuality.

yeah, but is his music any good, or just a bunch of atonal hiss? He has a few songs I have enjoyed, but he spends too much time with symbolism, and too little with good music. Manson sucks and if anything is a serious argument against free speech. If everyone just shut up and did what they were told, I wouldnt have to see Manson's gangly pale white corset wearing ass on TRL. Manson makes people hate free speech, and thats why I hate him.

Free speech has many good pints. If you dont like listening to Marilyn Manson, dont listen to him. I hate rap, so I dont listen to it. Clean, clear and under control.

for the most part I agree with this, but it's not just people who are predesposed to doing bad things. it's people who just don't feel as if they fit in with the "in crowd" so to speak. Or people that feel that they don't get enough attention from their parents or peers so that they result to negative attention in the form of whoring themselves out or doing "evil" things.

I personally hated high school up until Senior year only because I did'nt fit in with anyone in my school. the hip hop crowd rejected me, the goths ignored me, the posers looked down at me. I kept to myself, but I was strongminded enough to know that I did'nt need those cliques to survive school. But alot of kids don't have that knowledge. (sorry to sound preachy if I did)

I was just doing a little Manson bashing. Im all for free speech, and Manson takes advantage of it to make himself famous. But because he takes advantage of it, small minded people want to crack down on free speech. Hes ruining it for everybody, and people love him for it. The part that really sucks is that hes a pretty smart guy. What a frickin waste.

Marilyn Manson makes himself famous? Not at all. The media print stories of him and people who hate him write stories about him and then they make him more famous by posting on message boards about how they hate him being famous.

Do you remember his last video, where he went "gangsta-goth"? the song sucked, and the video sucked. What good song has he come out with this year? none, because hes used up all the talent he had (he even pissed off twiggy!). I already admitted to liking a few of his songs, but he hasnt come out with a good song in a long time. he also sucks live.

Oh shut up that such a cop out "I do bad things because I'm evil just like everyone else is" If I hear one more goth whining about the unbearable pain of life in the face of evil I'm going to be sick.
Everything you do is a choice good, evil or indifferent. Everything. You. DO. Is. Your. Choice. All you can do is try to make the right choice and deal with that choices results.
