png is lossless, meaning that it is the most high-quality picture you can possibly get. jpeg messes up colors and lines.

jpg suck absolute ass. they are the worst format, quality wise, that has ever been invented. they do, however, offer the smallest file size, generaly. png's on the other hand, offer some of the best quality on the net, beat out only by the massive tiff. the upside to png files is that with this great quality, you get a not so terribly huge file. they are not much bigger then jpegs. i personally love png files. i think they are one of the best formats available.

I haven't read up much on how PNGs work, but they are like JPGs implementing GIFs. That is, it takes off both of the clearness qualities (color richness and resolution sharpness) that each of the formats use to be able to rapidly decrease filesize to some point, this making it rather suited for final versions of rich vector images and such (thus for you). Requiring lots of PNGs to be resolved simltaneously could cause performance problems; they're pretty complex.

Actually sometime saving as gif might save more then .jpg.
Images with certian Palletes will be smaller and higher quality then .jpg.

Case and point.
(right click to examine file size)

57.8 KB .jpg 80% quality (100% quality 150KB)
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5559/casepo4 .jpg

25.6 KB .gif 100% quality
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6634/casep g6.gif

As you can see with this image .gif is the way to go for file size. not .jpg
