Hey, I did the same thing a long time ago.
I was over at this other kid's house; this really anoying kid who was always bragging on about everything. I was about 8 years old with my younger brother there, with my GB Pocket and Pokemon Red. He saw my Red and started talking about his Mew that he Got in one of those special Premier Events. I was intruiged.
Later we were in his Van on the way to I cant remember where, myself and brother in the back seat, Him in the seat infront of us. Me, being a bit of a drok at the time, had a link cable with me for just such as occasion. I asked the kid if If my brother could borrow his GB colour so that I could battle him on the trip, he agreed, but gave me these 3 little words that I'll remember until the day I die: "Just don't trade."
So, I hooked up my linkcable, and booted up a trade. Now I have an official Mew, and that jackass (Probably 16-17 by now) has a grand-spankin' new weedle. I still have that Mew on my Gold.
Though, it is possable to get a glitched out mew in Red/Blue, and this one doesnt mess up your game. Just go to Cerulian City with a pokemon with teleport, go to the area where you would travel to get to the Secret Dungion, but stay in the one spot right above the trainer, keeping him one space out of sight. You mustn have battled him before. Press Down and Start at Neigh the same time, then use Teleport. You'll see him get that lieelt "!" over his head, but you teleport before he can start the battle. You aught to go back to the pokemon center in cerulain, head back up to that spot. On the bridge your Menu should open automaticaly. Close it, then a "Random" enounter with a Wild Mew will appear. Catch that Elusive Mofo.
Google it, you'll see what I mean.

Umm, no one really cares. So probably why no one is questioning it. Besides, unless its change from the other versions, takes a little bit to setup a trade and hard to do it especially on the go without stopping and at elast looking at teh screen.

Although I can't say I completely disbelieve it
