Nice skirting of the issue... 2003-04-09 09:58:42 Reply

Since Basra was invaded (for the fifth time) by British forces, much has been made of Saddam's palaces, especially how he lives in luxury, while the rest of the population lives in abject poverty. How evil!

Does this mean that Britain is ruled by a coalition of Mad Evil Dictators, then? Tony Blair has several highly priced, luxuroius places of residence throughout the country, and of course, the Royal Family have several palaces dotted around to take residence in. Meanwhile, there are people living in derelict council estates in run-down areas, with little or no money, and some forced to live in the street. And, of course, Dubyuh also has the choice of Camp David, the Bush Family Residence, his own home, and probably a few other places to call "home", while others call them "beyond their wage expectations."

Have the news broadcasters run out of ways to simplify things, or have they started to utilise irony in the hope that we won't notice?

And another thought, while the US (and, apparently, British) Army is casually routing Iraqi forces, nothing is made of it. If it were the Iraqis decimating the troops, who have no protection against air attack, wouldn't it be deemed something along the lines of a "terrible massacre"? Doesn't top the leader of the British forces stating 600 Iraqi civilians had been wasted by non-Iraqi (ie the US not checking targets AGAIN) troops as if it was a minor inconvenience, though.

American media is good at making everyone look bad when it works in their favor. Of course, let's ignore that the President of the United States just built a new ranch in Texas, a huge, sprawling thing, while some people in Texas communities live on the street with nothing to eat but trash.

But don't let reality get in the way of the war, George. Your WMD theory didn't pan out, and you're 'Catch Saddam' plan isn't working too well, either. Anything you can come up with to help your cause, eh?

It's all "Spin Doctoring". We discussed it with examples in another topic by said name.
I wouldn't object to a topic revival.

Good point D2K.

Also, Saddam was born into poverty and worked his way up the ladder, as opposed to Bush who was born into so much money that he could fail at every business venture he tried and still be filthy rich.

im pretty sure that Bush isn't using our tax dollars to fund his ranch. While saddam did use his people money for himself. And if the Iraq soldiers dont want to have any more air attacks they should surrednder. Thats like saying they only have sharp sticks so we cant use guns. The object of war to kill your enemy and stay alive yourself.

the difference is that in britain and the US there is the possibility that anybody can raise themselves to a level of wealth that would afford them such luxuries with the proper amount of will, work, and luck. in iraq? good luck ever really owning anything of value unless you are part of the controlling family or if you are a crime lord. this isnt a fair comparison, iraq never had an industrial revolution in the consumer market (only military) and therefore there is a much smaller chance that anyone besides the dictator can develop massive wealth

im pretty sure he is. either way, hes using your tax dollars to fund a big session of killing people. and the whole only having sharp sticks thing is cool, we should have wars fought only with 12-inch sticks. that would reduce casualties.
