I doubt we have many rape victims on this site. Of course it would offend, but that is a minority. And nobody cares for minorities.

Trivialising a violent thing like rape doesn't offend me necessarily. I understand its a forum full of teenagers that have little life experience, and probably don't know a rape survivor. I take it in stride. It's when I see the phrase 'rape her' in every other thread that it wears on me. It isn't something like a racist slur that only has as much meaning as people put onto it. Rape is very real.

Ok, lets take me as an example then. Ive been in a real school shooting, a HUGE problem today, a very real problem, and a very talked about problem. i see the words gun, shoot, school, everywhere, PERIOD.
I doubt it's due to their 'inexperience' to knowing a rape victim in this sense. Of course it would SUCK to know one, and you give their pity, but then if you look at the extremity of everyone having to close their mouths for these kinds of cases, wtf would we laugh about to get it all out anyways?
When people talk about school shootings, I know they arent talking about me, or the girl who was killed, or my best friends' friend who was the shooter. So why would I get offended over them horse playing over it?
So why is it ok to declare offense and vulgarness when someone sees the word rape, regardless of their situation involving it if it isnt a personal thing?
I dont think you need to be put in the situation to experience it, or understand it. There are a million different reasons to joke about 'real' things.

Barring every offensive word or phrase and have everyone talking to each other like Neopets is a thousand steps beyond barring being directly and deliberately and particularly offensive. You can't call gay members 'gay' in any offensive way or use racial slurs and that's as far as it should go really. The only problem is that 'rape' is not funny in almost every possible context. Unless it is comedy rape, like Barney the dinosaur. Or skeletons. Tossing the word around meaninglessly isn't funny at all.

And I don't care that your sister got raped (particularly) (although you're probably lying) - my best friend when I was little died in a house fire and I wouldn't get particularly offended reading 'burn the house down' as advice.

Yeah, people can be hurt by these things, but if a term is used in an impersonal way (i.e. you call people gay, but you don't actually persecute people who are actually gay) then I can't see how it'd be offensive.

Besides, I hardly think it would be worthwhile banning the use of every term deemed offensive by anyone.

I agree, I mean you were involved in a school shooting but you wouldn't get offended by Pico's school wouldn't you?

There's also a rape game on Newgrounds, has like 500,000 views. It's not graphic but it lets you live the persona of a rapist. I sure a game like that wouldn't offend, so why would a few pixel on a screen in a irrelevant forum offend? If it were a racial comment, or a comment on sexuality, mental illness etc then it would be an offense.

Last time I called someone a faggot I copped a 5 day ban, even though the way I used it in no way involved homosexuals. if I used the term "idiot" instead of "faggot", i woulda avoided that ban. But I accept that, and now I can choose better terminology.

Like someone say, somebody mention Club a seal and somebodies parents coulda been killed with seal clubs. there must be a limit.

as well as other terms.. some i'm talking about.

# The death of a loved one.

Many of us go through that every once on a while... and...?

# A divorce, separation, or breakup of a relationship.

I myself went through a particularly bad breakup some years ago... but I'm over it now... and...?

# Losing custody of children, or feeling that a child custody decision is not fair.

So what, it's what the judge in the case decides based on the law... and...?

# A serious loss, such as a loss of a job, house, or money.

I think that runs along the same lines of a relationship... and...?

# A serious illness.

Been through that... and...?

# A terminal illness.

Lost a grand-uncle from cancer... and...?

Other stuff that'll take too long to quote...

The point is... if you find these terms to be offensive to you just because someone said "Rape her asshole" galvanized your decision to be offended, then why in the unholy monkeyfuck are you even on newgrounds in the first place? So what? If Tom or Wade or even James bended and manipulated the rules to fit YOUR emo needs, then why don't they just go ahead and give you total admin rights and permissions and take a vacation in Aruba?

Huh? They didn't...? Oh shit, they did what...? Raped your user account? Oh Heaven forefend!!!

Gawd, get over it man. ShitonaStick pointed it out best (bless your soul for living through that shooting *tips drink*). Look at the average age of the users here. A good majority of them are between 13 and 20. Now if YOU took over newgrounds, a helluvalotta users would be banned for terms you deemed offensive to you.

But since i don't think you'll read through all that above... here's the short version:

LIVE WITH IT!

Yes, and I'm a rape survivor. Seeing the words 'rape her' posted as a solution to 'this girl won't talk to me, what do i do' or 'my best friend's sister is a bitch!' is a bit troubling, and to be perfectly honest, it's like a punch in the gut. One, because it's just a reminder, and two because its a regurgitated joke with no thought put into it.

That's why I said I find it personally offensive. If you'll also notice, I try very hard to keep my feelings out of bans. Rarely do I ban for homosexual slurs. Just as with the 'rape her' posts, it's when they are totally overused and ultimately unfunny that I ban for it.

Another thing to remember is that while NG started out as an inyerfaic site...times change. We've got a LOT of different types of users here, from all over the world. That insular commnity that found the same things to be uproariously funny is now a global one, and to be fair - humor is different the world around. So what's lollers to you or me, is deeply offensive to another.

But meh. This won't ultimately change anything. I was just clarifying things, really.

These days tragedy is all too common a word. It seems that each of us in our own way has been affected by it. The unfortunate truth to this is that at least one flash on this website will offend you, regardles... However, this is where I have to say: Grow up. (I'm not bitching at you Maus, you actually made sense.) All I'm saying is that Newgrounds has finally grown to the point that it's a reflection of the real world... There are people, just as Maus as has said, from all over the world and they all have different viewpoints. Should McDonald's be banned in India because Hindus believe cows are sacred? No... They just serve different products in that market. You're going to have to learn to just shakes your head and let the ignorant people pass right through your head. If you spend all your time worrying about what someone says and how it has offended you, you're going to do nothing but wear yourself out. If it's the kind of person that's trying to be offensive on purpose, which is the kind of person that would respond with "rape her" to just about anything, all you're going to do by complaining is let them know that what they're doing is working. Remember that kid in school that always caused problems, and no matter how much they disciplined him he kept doing it? That's because he feeds on it. He needs the attention and your anger is exactly what he wants. Just be a bigger person and remember... They're the idiot.

But personal problems like that isnt just a forum rule sort of thing. being as you can be anywhere when struck with a reminder, or what not. How is it fair to everybody who doesnt know? to make every post safe for every soul to enter their screen or lives.

That's why I said I find it personally offensive. If you'll also notice, I try very hard to keep my feelings out of bans. Rarely do I ban for homosexual slurs. Just as with the 'rape her' posts, it's when they are totally overused and ultimately unfunny that I ban for it.

I never doubted your ability at being a fantastic mod, fo shizzle.

And thats just more case that people need to learn to accept shit they wont like will be said. Considering the THOUSANDS of different views, someone just saying ' gay people are people too' might horribly offend me and my religion. But that's the whole thing about freedom of speech right?
To say as you do, as long as you don't personally try to go out at someone or hurt them personally. So if we have to accept it irl, and this site specifically still has the content and worse that it did 5-6 years ago, then it should still be a understanding , especially here, shit might be said YOU wont like.
And with the endless amounts of cultural difference in here now, its garanteed something will be said you wont like, because opinions will naturally clash, period.
I say, if you arent ready to handle it, then dont be here. We cant assume that people arent deeply offended by half the shit we say, as we cant assume the opposite. So to have to go over every post to make sure it pleases everyone and is perfectly politically correct in a place where its one of the few you can get away with letting go, is just impossible and stupid.
Sure there are times I think people take it too far, but as long as I ever crack a joke at someone who cant defend themself, or a tragic situation, who am I to really say that was the last straw just because * I * didnt like it. and im pretty sure MOST people here are guilty of making fun of these sorts of things period. ]

We gave the rules that you can't be attacked or purposely mean harm to an individual, but this would just start taking away their freedom of speech.

I understand what you're saying, Sam. I'm just trying to explain WHY someone would find some of the things here offensive. What I'm not doing is lending credence to the idea that offensive things should be barred. The personal attack rule covers the aspects of offensive posting just fine.

I think we're on the same side of things, just coming at it from different perspectives. :)
