Pinochet, the chilean dictator, died today.
http://www.emol.com/noticias/nacional/detalle /detallenoticias.asp?idnoticia=238569 (in spanish)
He was very weak after a heart failure he had a week ago.
Now, I'm between joy and anger. I'm happy he died because about 30% of the world's evil is gone, yet angry because he wasn't judged, and the investigations will stop. Also the people involved will not fall with him, AND he will probably be buried with military and presidential honors. What the fuck >:(
I'll try to see if I can get a BBC article or something.

What I can't understand is why some people still support him.

Money, mainly. And quasi-fascism.
With that being said, I can't say that his death saddens me in the least.

What really makes me mad is that attitude of feeling sorry for them now that they're old and weak. I mean, why should I feel sorry for him, being the cause of the death of so many?

Hello there, stoner! My post is on topic, because I'm talking about Latin American dictators. If you consider my post off-topic, then yours is too, because you're are talking about Castro, a Latin American dictator.
And believe me, I know what I'm talking about, my family has lived dictatorships very closely, and some people very close to my family have died, so I suggest you do what I do when I don't know about the subject being discussed, ask or simply shut up.
Anyway, let go of drugs, and elipsis, too.
; PS I'm Der-Löwe, not erdlowe

Probably for their same reason support Castro.
They're too busy engulfed in the hatred of another nation to see his flaws, and the ones that arent are either trying to assasinate him or forming an underground resistance to force him to step down.

anyways yeah castro is only still in power because he is against america and that seems to get you a free pass to do whatever you want most places these days..... He represents the resistance to "the man" kind of like the hippie lifestyle of the 60s... completely ridiculous but embraced for the sheer concept of it....

ya know that whole sixties "down with the man" thing might have actually caght on if they hadnt taken it to such extremes.
Extremes like drugs, nudist colonies (no one wants to see a naked plumber), the free love movement, the "feminist" movement (it would have Susan B Anthony cringe) in the 70's and 80's ,portraying delicious steak as murder, and telling people that having pets is oppresive.
Racial equality and limiting corporate power (the good things Hippies stood for) would have really caught on.

In order for a man to be truly forgiven, he would first have to feel remorse for his actions.

Sort of.
Im comparing the reason that his people didnt notice his flaws so much as the rest of the world, but not their character.
Just the reason for the people they govern being largely oblivious

I'm not talking about forgiveness, they should be forgived once they pay for what they have done. I'm talking about the hypocritical attitude some people have of "looking at him, poor man". He's not a poor man, he stole tax-payer's money, he killed civilians, and he got away with it.

It's hypocritical to condemn Pinochet but not Castro, I'm glad people on the left and the right here seem to agree wih this.
Pinochet killed about 3000 but how many has Castro killed in his long reign? Is it any worse because the murders were spread out over time?
Pinochet gave up power and Chile propered (at the expense of human life) whereas Castro has been dictator for life in Cuba and Cubans have a low standard of living.
It's like comparing Hitler and Stalin, they're all evil tyrants.

Excalibur, stop talking out of your ass please. You don't know why people still support Pinochet. It wasn't (or at least not the major reason) because people were against some other country. like Empanado said, money and quasi-fascism.

This is true. Pinochet was the spawn of Satan and if there is a hell he is undoubtably there, but Castro has killed more people with his political ascension and even maintains a life dictatorship, whereas Pinochet forwent this when he realized his people hated him and under pressure from foreign governments.

Heh. Well, there's some degree of logic in that. However, as previously stated by several people here, they're all evil tyrants. No one can seriously and truthfully be considered "more" than the other. The intent and the disregard for human life is the same, the only thing that truly changes are the circumstances. Otherwise the whole thing would resemble a trading card game.

I didn't see an 'I think' or 'In my opinion'. Just a 'probably', and you said that with nothing to back it up. That's not an opinion, that's talking out of your ass.
