4.07 / 5.00 13,902 ViewsI've always fancied the idea of combining a real-time strategy game with an FPS, like Command & Conquer with Counter-Strike. Two players (or more, if there are more than 2 teams) would play in the strategy game mode, viewing a larger perspective of the map and giving order to their troops by clicking the mouse. These troops would be actual humans playing the game in FPS mode, doing their best to obey (or disobey) the commands given and defeat the enemies they encounter.
Whenever people were joining the server, the commanders would become able to build or train more troops. The joining players would then take the role of the newly trained units. Also, when a player is killed, he could go back in the line waiting to become a new unit on the battlefield. Units would be built at the same rate as usually in strategy games, so the waiting time wouldn't be too long. Also, the commander would decide what kind of weaponry (or even vechicle) the unit aka the player will use, depending on the strategic resources (gold, money, gas, minerals etc.) at his disposal. The only thing that would suck about this game would be being assigned a boring role by the commanding player, like a gold harvesting unit, or when the commander has ordered you to "stay put" until attacked or given new orders.
Pong and tetris.

I would say they've done that, and poorly, with C&C: Renegade...

...but this sounds just like a similar idea I had for a game, which I intend to create when I'm successful in the games industry (I'm currently studying Games Computing at Uni). In my game, there would be the overall strategy players, and many many single-unit players, in a persistant world. I suppose, really, it would be like combining Empire Earth and Oblivion. Players wouldn't be assigned a commander, but could sign up to an army (which may be computer controlled :/ ) or work freelance on their own.
