4.09 / 5.00 15,161 ViewsI was talking to a noob in my form at school who was practically masturbating over the new Halo 3 video. When I said that I would rather play Twilight Princess, he said that no-one would ever buy it because the graphics were crap (which they're not anyway). He was bragging about how graphics are everything and games are awful without them, while I was trying to say that gameplay was all that was required for a game (Super Mario Bros confirms this) and a game which had beautiful graphics but was just an on-rails shooter where you shot big fat ugly aliens without any difficulty levels, easter eggs and bonus levels, would be like a good looking game which game stores wouldn't even stock. So now I want your opinions: How much do graphics matter when it comes to video games?
ghraphics are gewd they make games coool
Graphics add to a game, but they don't make it. A game can be good without them, but with them it becomes better.
Basically, gameplay is the cake, graphics are the icing.
If the game sucks then graphics don't mean shit. Besides there's no way Halo is better then Zelda.
Both matter in order to have a good game.Dur!

only thing Halo 3 will have is good graphics to try to make up for shitty gameplay and everything else.

Excellent way of putting it I think.
Graphics, I find a bit important but overall, gameplay wins.
Well yeah, graphics are a big part of video games. Take a look at Madden 96, then compare it to 07. Which would you rather play? People will always complain that graphics need to be better in games, but there has to be a certain limit beofre the games are actually like a virtually reality game where it sucks your life in it and it costs 1000$
Heh, that vid doesn't even show the in-game graphics.
all hail pre-rendered footage? XD

In that situation, graphics is like the high card in Poker: they're both pretty similar and when it comes to that, of course graphics will make your decision.
Good graphics are good for a game, but it is less important than the plot, interface, etc
People who orgasm over Graphics and use it as a reason to buy a particular game or console are complete tards. People who are wooed by pretty graphics that look SLIGHTLY better with those extra pixels you can't see are bound to be constantly dissapointed with what they buy. It's shallow and very stupid.
GTA: San Andreas' graphics aren't amazing, but that doesn't mean it's not one of the greatest PS2 games of all time.
The Wii seems to have the most potential at the moment.
I hardly ever come here anymore....

I know, I know, i'm a genius.
There's a number of factors that decide the overall quality of any particular object or event.

It really depends on what you mean when you say graphics... If you mean visually realistic then it doesn't matter. However, if you mean graphically stylised then it can be very important and add greatly to the game..Just look at Defcon, it's one of the greatest games i've ever played yet the graphics are that of a dehumanised 1980s vector graphics computer-themed world map yet it adds to the whole point of the game..
These days, there are certain expectations regarding graphics. If some company released an Xbox 360 game that looked like it belonged on Nintendo 64, we all know that nobody would even buy it.
But a great game does not necessarily need good graphics.
There are plenty of games that have amazing graphics, but fail when it comes to gameplay, features, music, and pretty much any other category. Likewise, there are some great games, like Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, whose graphics are average at best. In fact, compared with newer games, Eternal Darkness' graphics are pretty bad. But as fas as gameplay and plotline goes, the game could probably stand up to anything being produced today.
Of course, that's not really surprising. When you think about it, the only thing that's being improved with the release of newer consoles is graphics capability. Then again, I suppose the Nintendo Wii would be an exception to this, since the controlling on that console is truly unique. But look at the difference between Xbox and Xbox 360. The only reason to buy an Xbox 360 is better graphics, unless there's a particular game on the 360 that you must have. As far as I'm concerned, there's no reason to ditch your old Xbox until they stop selling games for that platform.

well i understand why he feels that way, as all the new consoles are like OMG WE HAVE GOOD GRAPHICS! WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT THE GAME PLAY, JUST LOOK AT HOW CRISP THOSE NIPPLES ARE ON YOUR HIGH DEF BIG SCREEN. OH YEAH :FAPFAPFAP:
where as the wii was like... well, whatever, lets go for something fun and original. which is totally cooler. twilight princess is amazing, period. graphics matter, but shouldn't be #1 priority...
unless you eat feces, because there are people who believe this is true... feces eaters...

Uh huh...
Halo and Halo 2 had some pretty damn good gameplay. That's why so many people like the series. I can guarantee that the first Halo game didn't become famous just because of graphics.
So, unless they go out of their way to make the gameplay worse this time around, I doubt Halo 3 will have any problem there.

They dont matter, until a certain point. If graphic become HORRIBLY bad then it will probably ruin the gaming experience, but in most cases they dont matter, they just add to the game.
well, I'm playing FF8 for the first time in years and loving it. But graphics can really make a game great if they add to the atmosphere or experience, like Gears of War.
Think about it.
If there was a game which had the absolute best graphics in the world but all it would be is
taking out the trash or something. It would suck.
If there was a game that had shitty graphics but really good gameplay, it would be a good game.
Graphics tend to draw people in to a game, and are essential for a realistic experience, but Gameplay should be the priority. After all, who wants a game that isn't fun?
Good Gameplay + Good Graphics = Great game
Good Gameplay + Bad Graphics = Fun game
Bad Gameplay + Good Graphics = Fanboy Circle-jerk
Any questions here?
That was a great post. Right Zach?
I've got you beat by nearly two years.
Someone posted something like this in there:
"Video games are like women, their personality ("Gameplay") is what truley matters, but their looks ("Graphics," obvious) matter somewhat too."
Something like that. Gameplay is more important, but graphics are nice to have. :D
"In the house with the laughing windows, we're spilling blood like a cheap innuendo."

Yes they are
As you can tell by my name I made this account when I was a little younger. Obviousely graphics matter in a game. If a new game comes out on xbox 360 ps3 and wii ill buy it for 360 since it has the best graphics. Although they don't completely make a game graphics defenitely help out a lot. That's why in my opinion xbox360 is the best console followed buy ps3 and wii comes in last, mainly because of crappy graphics and that most of the games are kiddy (not all most) and the ones that aren't kiddy are mostly on all 3 consoles.
