Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I was using a mac, and even though I saved the file I was using as ".html", when it opened it displayed the exact text I had typed, html and all.
The html was correct, what else is the problem?

You need to save it as plaintext or something like that. I know on notepad it's something like 'all files' to make the extension work properly ;)

hmm... hang on I'll see if that works...
nope, doesn't work.
It gives me an option to save as html, but though that opens in the browser it only still displays the html.

Alright, it sounds as though you've opened a text document in a program that is only capable of saving files to extensions that the editor recognises (Windows has/had the same problem, like if you were to open up notepad (which didn't typically let you save files with arbitrary extensions in past versions) and save a file as whatever.php (it would save as whatever.php.txt)).
Ross (resident programmer) advises using textwrangler (source). Try downloading that, opening the file from there, and re-saving it as an html file. I haven't used Macs to any extent for at least 10 years, so maybe I'm way off the mark... But I hope that helps.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. I write html/css/php etc on a mac and it works smoothly. Piece of cake. Though it's best to get a html editor rather than using textedit.
