Um there is no best branch. Each military branch has its own unique purpose and only complement eachother in the bigger picture.
The Army is a very high-tech and heavy ground force meant to attack and destroy enemies over a large area of ground, in a massive scale.
The Navy is designed to project force throughout the oceans, destroying the enemy's naval forces and coastal defenses across the world from the ocean.
The Airforce is designed to project air power all across the world. To support the other branches of the military with more airpower.
The marines are the rapid response team of the US military. Lighter, more agile, and designed to fight very high-intensity, medium-scale engagements. The Marines have a mixture of air, ground, and sea components so they can operate indepedently from the other branches and create a an opening into enemy territory to give time to the other branches to come into play. But the Marines by themselves aren't capable of fighting a long term, large scale ware by themselves for very long.
No single branch is the best branch, they operate to bring about a common goal. Each branch kicks ass of itself, the reason we have the worlds most powerful military is because our branches operate together so well.
Yay, Obama won. Let's thank his supporters:

This is one of the few times that I can say that I agree with you completely. Good man.

Ditto.
Cellar, this was a really great post!
In the end, what makes a branch better than the others is the personality and career goals of the person entering the service.

Marines actually have their own seperate fleet of transporters and battleships independent of the Navy. This is due to the fact when they need do initiate a preemptive strike they can do it immediately without waiting for the cooperation of another branch. Though the Marine fleet is much smaller than the one the Navy possesses they can do their own fighting.
That's how it is with the US Military. I can't speak for other NATO countries.

Well the best part of the BAF (British Armed Forces) has to be the army. This is due to the fact that the SAS and Paras (especially Para3) are apart of it and they are some of the toughest and most well trained regiments in the British Armed forces. Just read the tale of a para going to a pub.. Some guys want to beat him up and it takes 6 of them with bricks to knock him to the floor.

But the SAS can't take on a whole army by them selves, there for special operations. They need lifts with the Navy an the air corps or whatever.

Not in Britain, border control etc is under the jurisdiction of the Royal Navy. The British coast guard is made up of several organisations including the RNLI none of which have law enforcement roles.

This is a mistake that the upper parts of the USMC are now begining to understand with Iraq. It is also what I have been saying for 3+ years of their involvment. Their training, in my opinion, is much better for their battlefield personel than other branches, and they can work independantly. But the USMC also uses a lot of older, out dated equipment. Hell we just got the intercepter flak jackets not too long before I had gotten out. But their downfall is definately with prolonged involvment. The outdated gear doesn't quite work as well for long periods of time.

I do agree completely with you on that point. As far as difficulty of military training, non special forces, I would say USMC by far.

Same with the in the US.
The US Coast Guard isn't under the jurisdiction of the US Navy except in war time when there could be possible naval wars in the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. Right now there are some parts of the Coast Guard that are under the Department of Homeland Security, and I think there is local civilian control for some parts as well.

First: the USMC is not its own totally separate branch of the military. It falls under the Dept of the Navy (I have a Marine buddy who reminds me it is the MEN's department though...).
As for having their own separate fleet: not really. The only 'vessels' the USMC has are rubber recon type rafts and amphibious landing crafts. They are totally dependent upon the Navy to get them anywhere by sea (or the USAF by air). True, there are vessels that are tailor made to the USMC such as small assault carriers for helios, Harriers and a Marine Expeditionary Force. But these are commanded and operated by the Navy.

I know I'm being a little crazy saying this, here, but what the hell.
The best military force I can think of, is the one that KEEPS THE PEACE. Like the UN Blue Hats for instance.
Injured Workers rights were taken away in the 1920's by an insurance company (WCB), it's high time we got them back.
