With U.S. ground forces closing in fast, Saddam Hussein exhorted the Iraqi people to "fight them with your hands," according to a statement read Thursday on Iraqi satellite television.
The statement — addressed to the people of the region southeast of Baghdad — was read by Information Minister MohammedSaeed al-Sahhaf.
"Fight them with your hands, God will disgrace them. God is great," the statement said.
At a news conference later Thursday, Sahhaf disputed the coalition claims of battle successes. "All this is to cover their disappointment and inability," he said.
Sahhaf said Republican Guard forces battled coalition troops in the area south of Kut and "taught them lessons, a catastrophe," inflicting heavy casualties and forcing a coalition retreat. "We buried a lot of them today," he said.
He also claimed Iraqi forces killed scores of coalition troops on Wednesday at Basra.
"We're now trying to exhaust them, making them more tired until our leadership decides the time and method to clean our territory of their desecration," Sahhaf said.
The U.S. military reported only three Marines wounded in the fighting at Kut and said its forces were advancing into the outskirts on Baghdad unhindered by the Republican Guard.

More importantly this has become a propaganda war. It's being well utilised by both sides, this time around.

IF the US is fighting the war like they are now... It's gonna get REAL ugly. The US and there troops are underestimating the iraqi army and overestimating the Republican Gaurds.

If things get ugly, we can make a few changes to the battle plan and reclaim the advantage.
It's mostly the Republican Guard that we'll be fighting in Baghdad, and it's better to overestimate than underestimate.
The main phase of the war will soon be over.

Saddam's regime is in danger. He knows that by showing even one ounce of weakness, the people will rise up. So he is trying to stay in power by making perporterous claims that America is losing badly and that America is nowhere near Bagdad, when in reality, we are only 10 miles from it. The deception can only last so long; when the US troops are at Bagdad, Iraqis will know that their government is weak and will rise up. Saddam's days are limited, assuming he is even alive.

I am prettty sure Saddam is going to survive this war. If he needs to he will put is bunker under a hospital or orphange(Assuuming Iraq has one). He will survive no matter how many lives of his own people it costs. He loves himself way more than he hates us.

Saddams a little pussy, putting children in front of his troops and hiding like a scared little rat. And his people actually have the nerve to say their winning the war.Its hard to believe a guy who killed so many could be such a coward.

You call him a coward?
Americans drop bombs while going 600 miles per hour so there is no possible chance of retaliation.
THAT is cowardice.
Using Civilians as shields is merley exploiting America's "humanitarian" side.

actually that's the most revolutionary part of this war, surgical military strikes have not ever been done like this in history, where missiles, when on target, are accurate to the foot. It's quite an age we live in when we don't have to send actual troops over to fight battles and blow things up like in the olden times.
and if bravery is sending troops to unnecessary deaths, then you're confusing it with reckless abandon and onslaught

That is not cowardice. It's good common sense. We do not live anymore in the 1700's, when armies lined up to kill each other in a "civilized" manner. America doesn't intentionally harm or put civilians in danger. Saddam is willing to, and already has. See the difference?
