1/10 making good music.
9/10 knowning people.
Set up a myspace profile. That's probably your best option.

Go to a college that has connections. One of the big deciding factors for me is who is involved in the composition department. If you can get a person who has an in somewhere, you're much better off than someone who doesn't have that connection, regardless of talent.
If you are planning on going into music (especially composition), you need to be sure you look at what the college can bring you besides education. Education is useless unless you can apply it somewhere.

What if this connection involves going to another region?

Connection can't do to much if your music "owns the living crap out of a fridge".
Well the probability that a label will come to YOU (I'm speaking in general now) ain't big at all...However you can go to sites such as Discogs and look up labels. Then when you find something that interests you, just send them a reference to your work and hope for a response.

Setting up your own label. Well, the basics are you're going to be paying to get other peoples works pressed and distributed. And then you give them a % of what ever of these works you manage to sell to record shops.
Start of with vinyl first. If all goes well get a company name and so on.

I don't really understand why people feel the need to join with a record label so badly (yes, I realise the irony).
If you just want your music to be heard, the internet is still the best option.
If you want to make money, then you're in the wrong business, because statistically speaking, out of the hundreds of people who post in the audio forum, probably only 1 or 2 will come close to "making it" :P

If you want to make some money, you definitely don't need a label! Services such as CDbaby.com will help you sell your cd and even get it up on itunes. I've had moderate success with it (although I still haven't quite broke even :D), so I'd definitely recommend it.

uuuh,no...you send demo tapes. it's called shopping for labels
look up labels you think would be interested in your type of music & see what guide-lines they have for submissions
major labels don't take any so you're shit out of luck if you think metalblade or capital is picking you up or something.
having an already established fanbase also helps...you can prepare a "Press Kit" but i only recomend it if you are a pop artist
gotta start at the bottom before you get to the top. & i'm not saying myspace is a bad idea,on the contrary, get your music anywhere & everywhere. the more people that hear it the better...a musical carreer isn't easy
getting signed shouldn't even be a priority,if you get signed it will probably be to an indie label & you will see 0 money of the albums sold by them, you will only see money from gigs & merch you sell at shows...which is something you could do on your own, work on a fanbase first
how do i know?? i was in two signed bands...there's a lot of sacrifice involved in this line of work
Congratulations! You just destroyed someone else's hard work! This Flash has been blammed.
