This is a California issue, but it could happen in any state where there is a prominent immigrant population.
The following letter came out of the office of Tan Nguyen who is running for office.

Nothing like a demeaning letter to a potential illegal immigrant.
If they suspect the voter to be illegal, why don't they just toss their ass out?

It wasn't threatening,
HOWEVER... it was fucked up.
It tells alot about his character... Not everyone who has a Spanish surname, such as I, are immigrant. I was born here. And not every person who has a Spanish surname can read in Spanish (I can read it fluently... but there are tons out there who don't.)
I would be seriously upset because that would mean his compaign were taking on subversively racist tones.

I hear you. My last name is German, but I can't speak German. I can, however, speak spanish. And my Puerto Rican friend cannot.
The sig that I'm wearin? Awesomely made by Skaren!
Also, I like annoying Americans by calling English football "real football" and American football "rugby".-Lost-Chances

I dunno Fli I think the basic message of: "Don't vote or you'll be tossed in Jail you immigrant!" is a threat.

True that. I mean wow, I don't care what political wing you hail from, that is in clear violation of any and every ethics rule in business and politics.

I thought it sounded like, "You shouldn't vote if you're illegal, you may be tossed in to jail." The auxillary vers changes the whole meaning.
And that's pretty much a given, although this letter was written in extremely horrible unsensible unfashionable taste.
I've more peeved because I percieve subversively racist tones... such as writting the letter in Spanish... and sending it only to people with Spanish last names.

I'm pretty much Liberal, BTW...
I mean... queer, Mexican, illegal immigrant parents... Couldn't really find acceptance in Conservatives circles. Although my parents are pretty much Conservative as you can get.

if i can play devils advocate...
its not a threat to voters, only illegal immigrants, who if they try to vote, can be jailed. they're not gonna start tossing illegal immigrants in jail, especially in California (who would cut the grass at my apartment?). It's fucked up to send it JUST to people that have Spanish surnames, but I'm willing to bet the LEGAL mexiacan immigrants in Cali are far outnumbered by the ILLEGAL ones. You can't send them a letter saying "We know you're illegal so don't vote." But its perfectly fine to send out letters to people saying "You know just in cane you ARE an illegal immigrant...you know don't vote...just in case..."

Wrong thread. Also, completely off topic. Also, completely unsupported.

No. Shit.
That isn't the issue at hand. Fli got sent this letter and he is a full american citizen.
If this is the case, the people in power are playing scare legal citizens away from the polls, namely democrats.

I don't think anything big will come about just because of a letter... but I'd like to see if there is any action behind those words.

You don't think this isn't harming Republicans?
My mother, mostly a Republican voter (but not for Bush's election thankfully) is now going to vote only Democratic or other.
It's not perfectly fine.
It's being an asshole to people.

This is fucked up and racist. Damned political douchebags. One thing that makes me want to stay out of politics in this country is that I figure I'll become a complete asshole.

Almost half the hispanics in this country vote conservative though. If that were the case they'd be finding ways to scare black people, who vote over 3/4 liberal by the whole.

I'd say a large chunk of hispanics vote conservative because they like to keep their ties to their traditional roots, which is not always a good thing. My home has this strong anti-gay view so they lean conservatively, which I hate. They're also persuaded to a conservative vote easily. My mom was actually planning on voting no on the proposition 86 gasoline tax, that is until I told her it was paid for by oil companies. My aunts wanted to vote for bush based only on the fact he wasn't pro-gay as Kerry was. I had to tell them to find another reason to vote for a president because there are more important and immediate issues out there than their anti-gay views.
It kind of pisses me off how much of my previous family generation (parents, aunts, uncles) vote conservatively because they were all born and raised in Mexico and have strong traditions and views which are set in stone. My cousins and siblings, however, were born and raised here in Southern California and they all tend to have liberal views... interesting ain't it?
