UK girl arrested for asking to study with english speaking students
So you're sitting in science class and your teacher assigns you all bull-shit study groups like they aways do; the ones where you don't get a say. You find out your study group partners don't speak any english. So what do you do? You kindly get up and ask to switch groups, right?
WRONG. Your ass goes to jail. Fingerprints, mug shot, the whole deal. You racist fuck, serves you right. How dare you ask to study with people that speak your language.
I must lollerskate on this matter.

Okay, I didn't post in that thread, ugh. My memory has forsaken me, I blame society and the MAN in particular for exposing me to harmful substances.

Yeah, she does look like a chav. I have very little doubt she was actually racist about it (e.g. "fuckin' pakis" or something to similar effect).
However that still doesn't make it right that she was arrested & thrown in jail. It's still fucking stupid.

I meant it was fucking stupid she was thrown in jail for being racist. You shouldn't be able to arrest people for that in my opinion.
Although you are right, she probably did deserve to be there for something.

Yup, it is stupid.. What next? someone at a shop will get arrested for not understanding someone who is speaking in a different language when they want to buy something?

Me neither. The thing is the people that are obsessed with this are white politicians really, the average person in Britain knows that it's aload of nonsense.

I think it was amusing when I worked with non-English speaking students, because then I could tell them to put curses and slang in their writing and the teacher couldn't do shit.
But yeah, throwing her in jail for not being Bilingular(Sp? It's late) is fucking bullocks.
I feel like a Brit for saying Bullocks.

They obviously had some level of English competency to be in school. Only one was fluent, but it doesn't mean the rest had zero knowlege of English.
God forbid she take some effort and patience for the sake of her grade.

No, they didn't obviously have to have some level of English competency. The article states twice that some of the students spoke no English, and that they were new to the country.
The girl was trying to move to a group where she could understand the project, and yet, here you are wanting to fail her for trying to learn, because she didn't want to "cooperate".
Turn the tables. Suppose one of the asian kids was placed in a group with all English speakers, and he asked to move to the group where there other Urdu speakers. Think he would have been chastised, arrested, or "done by the police?' Of course not. So, why then, is it so wrong for this girl to do the same thing?

OK, so they spoke little to no English, and that means what? That she had to speak through one of the other people? OMFG! Welcome to the real world princess, not everyone speaks English.

Ha! A 14 year old, who looks and dresses like that, from a failiure high school wanting to change because she wanted to learn? Bitch, please. It's like saying a white kid in Crenshaw wanted to change groups because the 4 Latinos he got paried with didn't speak English. Bullshit. That girl was being racist and EVERYONE HERE KNOWS IT. Granted, that comment didn't deserve a night in jail, more of just a smack in the face.

my what an idiot you are, what do you mean a girl that "looks like that." I don't care if they all spoke perfect english with a heavy accent. If someone has difficulty with the persons they're partnered with they should be free to say so and request a change.
I don't care if she is a neo-nazi skinhead there should never be laws restricting thought or speech. Now if the school had a policy of its own against that kind of conduct that we be perfectly acceptable, but arresting someone for not wanting to associate with other races is insanity, bordering on facism. Bring on the thought-police, Orwell was right.

I think it speaks volumes for your attitude that you accuse her of racism because she "looks and dresses like that".
At worst, she should have recieved a reprisal from the school itself. And that's only if she was actually racist or otherwise abusive in her requests. The idea of a "group discussion" where only one person understands anything you're saying is pure ridiculous.

Could she possibly understand the students? If so, the idea of punishing her was slightly more realistic, however, they went way too far with the whole idea.
Now, if she couldn't understand them, this is an example of what being "PC" has evolved into these days. She shouldn't have been punished. She should have been given a new group. I'm almost sure that if the people that were in her group could speak English, and she requested a new one with logical and decent reasons, she would have been given one.

And in the real world, people aren't forced by some to associate with people that speak different languages. Yet. And it kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a "group" when 1 person in the group can't understand the others.
Again, turn the tables. Suppose it had been one Urdu speaker that was put into a group of all English speakers, instead of a group with other Urdu speakers. Is he a racist for wanting to change to that group, too?

Congratulations on stooping to the ignorance level required to throw out such stereotypical assumptions. Good job! It really does take a lot of ignorance and arrogance to make judgements about people based on a single picture. Here, I need your help. I recently found this book. Since you're such an expert on extracting analysis from a snapshot, maybe you can tell me what it is about and if it's worth reading.

You're speaking to a guy from San Jose...
You're speaking to a guy who for the past 25 years of his life has been part of the Vietnamese, Fillipino, and Mexican community, and not all the time we are as fluent in English as others.
You're speaking to a guy who has been in the same exact situation over and over again and yet managed to always found a way to get A's and B's on group projects.
Now, I think personally going to jail was stupid.
However, she should have tried to engage in working because it's her grade on the line.
Now, if there were that many people who weren't as fluent in English, that would mean that that the majority of her class was like that. I don't think a teacher would put a bunch of non-english speaking immigrants together if there weren't a way to distribute them in such a way where they could be immersed with English speaking students.
More than likely, if she lived in a place similar to San Jose, than more than likely she will meet classes that will have more than half its classes not as fluent in English when compared to the primary language. I remember when I was in the 8th grade, there was no option for me to get other fluent English speakers in Leadership class. Sometimes I would get Kit, the only fluent English speaker in my group, and than Ngo, who knew some English, and also Thuy, who maybe one of the best students but is still learning the ropes of English.
That's how it was for me for most of my academic life.
Not only does she fail at participation, but she also disadvantages the other group from engaging in active learning of English. And she misses out on learning some cultural value from other peoples... I mean, when I left Independence, I was fluent in other languages just because when I got in a group we would always ask, "How do you say 'fuck you' in Vietnamese? What's 'shit' in Spanish?'"

Sorry, fli, but I got the impression only one knew how to speak english. It wouldn't surprise me that school let in people with no english speaking abilities. Not only that, but tif they knew english they seemed to refuse to speak it.
Even if they did have a rudimentary understanding of english broken-english is extremely hard to understand when you're working on a coordinative project.

Perhaps because I'm a first generation American and I'm more closer to a variety of non-English speaking communities, but I have never known no non-English speaking person who actively refuses to learn English. They may build communities together which avoids active English speaking, but... that's what barrios and ghettos are all about. In fact, they slowly add English words to their lexicon because that's how it is.
Even if they did have a rudimentary understanding of english broken-english is extremely hard to understand when you're working on a coordinative project.
If there were that many students in a group, more than likely the whole class had a dense not-fluent-English-speakers. What's a teacher suppose to do? Make sure they're equal in respects of having balanced amounts of English and non-English student combos. If possible. I remember 8th grade had more other foreign language speaking students and so often there was only one fluent-English speakers per group.
I don't think she was the only English English-speaking student who was stuck in that stituation.
This girl is in no way at fault. It's just a bunch of PC assholes in England getting their panties in a twist.
Yes, that's true.
I think the most should had been an F for participation points.
