I'm wondering if there are any Newgrounders in College. I have to start looking at colleges soon, and I was wondering if any college students had anything to say in terms of recommendations or so on.

Universities all suck. You'll have a better chance of a good professor in a community college.

I'm attending McMaster university, I'm assuming that it would be fairly similar with course loads and what you eventually hope to acheive...Depends on how "schooly" a course you decide on going into.

when you talk, i dont care what it means, shouldn't just stare at you, should i?

Yes sir. Get your core classes out of the way in a community college and then transfer to a college in state. Not only will you get uber cost reduction, but most likely your credits will transfer to the college so you won't have to take those boring classes again.

Goto Canada. The college is pretty damn cheap, and the education is good, come to Quebec. In Quebec we have some of the world's finest colleges..just bring all your money for college with you because if you don't know french it's next to impossible to find a job.

I know :'(

I wouldn't say that's true. There are tons of people in Montreal who don't speak a word of french and get along fine.

My mom wants me to go to McGill but I'd really much rather go to a smaller school of less than 30,000 people. The school's also too unselective for me. While I'm sure I could go to some great parties and bone some fine Canadian hos, I'd really rather get a good old fashioned American education.

Besides I don't want to speak french

Smaller schools are cool. It all depends on your style, really.
I can't give you too much advice because you're in a different situation than I am.
All I know is, my friend went to community college for her gen ed and the credits ended up not transferring, so she's a freshman still.
Just check up on all that stuff before you get into anything.
And.
Freshmen don't get laid even a quarter of as often as you'd like to think.

I couldn't agree with you more. Plus the class sizes are smaller, which guarantees that you'll get more attention from your profressor, classes are cheaper, you'll get a better look at the profession you want to persue after a degree, most likely closer to home.

I got to Eastern Washington University, and it is awful here. The teachers and classes are great, but it's like all the dumbasses decided to come here.

I don't speak French and I live here and get along pretty well. Plus as a side note to your "bone" comment, Quebec is known for having the most beautiful women in North America on average. I heard when Catherine Zeta-Jones came to Montreal she was described as a normal looking woman like any other girl on the street. And there's wicked NG'ers here too ;)

I want to study Biology/ Biochem/ Bioengineering. But then, that's a really vague idea of what I want. Ideally, I'd like to go to Columbia, but especially with a school as selective as columbia, I like alot of options. I was considering Tufts, also.

That's what I did. It saved me quite a bit in costs, to be sure. I do wish though, that more of my credits had transferred. The school I am at now is rather fickle about what they will accpet and what they won't. It's such a hassle.

EverGreen State College - it's where Kramer (from seinfield) and Matt Groening (creator of simpsons) went too. I met him last year when he came to speak to us.

I actually remember I made a post maybe a page back last year (goes to show my active-ness on here), where I wrote about my desire to get into the Ontario College of Art and Design, in the design stream. I applied around March and I was accepted.

In terms of universities, most of them specialize in a few particular fields, but they also usually have a diverse amount of practices to study. If you are unsure about what you want to do even when you begin to apply, remember that you will probably change your career about 4 times in your life. If you have enough money, go into the general arts for a year. It will drain your money and most of it will be for naught, because you'll be taking general courses that will probably not go towards your required credits for the program. Although you will develop a much clearer idea of what you want to achieve in the next 4 years through it.

Just don't STAY in a general arts program. In many universities these will be called the Arts and Sciences, Humanities, or just The Arts. Unfortunately, these programs just allow you to have a Bachelor of Arts, which is a BA. Which nowadays doesn't mean much of anything, unless you later go on to teacher's college, which is insane with competition and unless you are fanatically interested in teaching, you will probably not succeed.

You need to specialize. Otherwise there isn't much sense in going to Uni. Sure the experience is great, but if you have nothing to show for it at the end, you'll lose countless times to people who have a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Design, which are all specialized degrees.

But, that's just my opinion and what I have heard. It may also be different in different parts of the world.

But that is my piece of wisdom. Best of luck in your choice.

I suspect my experience of the University of Bath in the UK is no good to you, but it does have one of the best biology courses in the UK (I should know, I'm on it!). Sadly it is very expensive for foreign students to go to university in the UK, although my understanding is it isn't exactly cheap here!

As for your subject choice, where do you want to go with it? I take it you are more interested in the molecular/genetics/chemistry side of it looking at your subjects, as opposed to ecology etc. Jobs are pretty poorly paid in research, although certainly genetics is up and coming, as is bioinformatics- in fact if you are good with computers this is definitely the way to go at the moment!

Other than that, I am working at the University of Colorado in Denver at the moment (on placement for the third year of my course) and from what I can see it is very good for research based courses, although it seems to be much more chemistry/pharmacy based.
