I'm gonna go with Newton. The man NOT ONLY "discovered" gravity (i put that in quotes only for lack of a better word), but he INVENTED a branch of math.
That branch of math is now known as calculus. None of our mathematical advances since then have even rivaled that.
He also came up with the three laws of motion which eeryone probably knows...
Thus he beats out Einstien, any of the greeks, and even Stephen Hawking.

Either Da Vinci or Socrates, although Socrates would be more of a philospher than a scientist.
Faith tramples all reason, logic, and common sense.

Newton did not really "discover" gravity, although he did describe it better than anyone else before him. For instance, people already knew the formula of motion for an object in free fall. Galileo had already discovered it empirically. What Newton was the first to do is to define the fundamental laws of forces and, in doing so, to complete the description of the force of gravity. Thus, he invented the laws of classical mechanics.
Also, give credit where credit is due. Leibniz invented calculus first, and he explained it better. Newton did more with calculus.
However, Newton had some strange ideas. He believed in alchemy for instance and had some other strange scientific ideas.
I am personally split between choosing Einstein and Newton. Einstein also had other great accomplishments alongside re-defining the laws of classical mechanics. His other discoveries were sufficient by themselves to earn him the Nobel Prize in Physics. Then, he comes along and completely rewrites the laws of classical mechanics, which not only describes gravity better, but actually explains why it happens. Pretty good if you ask me. Although he had failings too; for instance, he did not accept quantum mechanics.

Yeah, those are the effects of gravity. Gravity itself is a force, which people did not know much about. So yeah, in that sense he did "discover" gravity.

"Politics"
1. the science or art of political government.
2. the practice or profession of conducting political affairs.
Note that the 'science' they refer to in websters dictionary is not the 'science' that newton was involved with.
Other definition of politics:
1. The activities or affairs engaged in by a government, politician, or political party:
Therefore the discussion of science is not technically politics and should have been added to the general section of the forum instead of this one.

Cellardoor, in reference to your comment about politics: The politics forum is not soley for the purpose of the exact definiton of politics.
You are a hypocrit. My proof is your last 20 posts, and probably the rest of yours. They had nothing to do with politics and yet they were here. Now shut the hell up.

Since Einstein is already taken, I'll go with Marie Curie, she was the first person to win not only one, but two noble prizes, due to her studies in radioactivity. She had to pay those prizes with her life, she died of radiation.
And her family is great, winning all those Nobel Prizes

WTF are you talking about? Almost all of my posts are in the politics forum, in threads that ACTUALLY have to do with politics and what I discussed actually HAS TO DO WITH POLITICS.
Debating who is the best scientist is not an example of politics. My last 20 posts that were mostly about the US relationship with Japan, Canada, the north korean issue, the US border enforcement issues and so forth. Those are political issues.
You are in desperate need of an education if you can't see the difference.

Shhh humbucker is being a troll I'm sure. Besides, when people from general post in politics threads... it's best to stay away from those threads, lest it rubs off on you.

Euler, beyond a doubt. He introduced mathematical notation, contributed heavily to the field of calculus, wrote the most famous mathematical equation (e ^ (i * pi) = -1), invented the totient function, proved Newton's identities, Fermat's little theorem, Fermat's theorem on sums of two squares, and made distinct contributions to Lagrange's four-square theorem, made progress toward the prime number theorem and conjectured the law of quadratic reciprocity, introduced graph theory, and did much work in applied mathematics.

Linguistics isn't a science. Besides, Noam Chomsky is an idiot, so I doubt he can be considered the "greatest scientist."

Sorry for the double posts, but I gotta say the greatest scientist is Michael Savage. Never has a person with a Ph.D in batony have such a well-formed political opinion.

Doctor Normal Bethune. Forget that he was a commie red, but remember him as the doctor that tried to destory polio and invent the transfusion technologly. Which is useful if you're bleeding to death and need blood donations.

Too bad the vaccines him and his research team prepared were easily contaiminated........
