First of all, if you are British, Canadian, Australian etc.. shut the hell up. This question can only be answered by AMERICANS, not disgruntled morons from other countries that like to jump at the opportunity to bash America.
The author of the thread asked a legitimate question so the last thing the ensuing debate needs is the rantings of uninformed Brits, Canucks, Australians etc..
If you aren't American, don't try and say what Americans fear because if you are biased against the US, as most of you are, then your contribution has no credibility because you will only say what you WANT people to believe. Your biased opinions only will serve your anti-US, anti-American thinking error instead of answering a legitimate question by an honestly curious person.

Myself? I fear a few things. The space between the dock and the cruise ship. Suprises. I don't think it varies between the rest of the world, unless you were trying to make a political argument out of this.

Islamophobia is rampant all throughout the West. But there is subtle differences.
For one, in the UK, the London bombings were committed by brittish citizens, who were born and raised here.
The 9/11 bombers were not….

Actually, there has been a lot of talk in our society about acceptance of Islam, that it's not the Muslims at fault but the radical Muslims, etc. We do have a great deal of Islamophobia though.

I disagree with that analogy.
Muslims in British society seem to be isolated from the rest of the culture and to openly voice distest towards their governments and their actions, the whole "Londonistan" concept where Muslims have created their own little society in Britain where they openly teach hatred and violence with impunity. I think this causes the uneasiness among other British citizens.
In the US however, most of the Muslims are indistinguishable politically from Americans of other faiths and have assimilated into American culture. This makes most Americans not fear Islam or Muslims but to fear terrorist groups, be they Islamic terrorist groups or Christian or whatever else.
I don't think Americans fear Islam in general like some Brits do because most Americans personally know and respect Muslims in our own society. In fact, at my school I know about 10 Muslims who blend in entirely with everyone else, some of them are douchebags, but some of them are cool people. When Americans fear Islamists, they make a clear distinction between normal Muslims and Islam as a whole and the small fringe groups of people who teach and practice fundemental Islam.
I don't think American fears "Islam". Its not nearly as simple as that and most Americans aren't that paranoid.

You're full of crap.
My entire family is Mormon, I don't go to church and I have been inactive for 4 years but I know for a fact that Mormons are NOT taught to fear or hate Muslims. In fact, Mormons are usually the most accepting of other religions, Mormons don't hand out Anti-Catholic, Anti-Muslim, Anti-Jewish writings like members of other faiths do.
Also, I think you are lying when you said that a Mormon came to your door said that about the Muslim in the apartment above you was 'evil and following the devil'. First of all, a Mormon Missionary is NEVER supposed to say ANYTHING remotely critical of another religion like that, and that goes against teachings of the Mormon religion which states that just because someone believes in a different religion that doesn't mean they are evil or follow the devil like other religions teach.
But I know for a FACT that you are lying because Mormons only go door-to-door in groups of 2 or sometimes more. Mormons aren't even allowed to go by themselves due to tradition and for safety reasons (sort of the buddy-system).
So you're a complete liar. Nice try you moron.

That was at it's peak during the cold war. Now I would say, in the broad political perspective it's:
1. Change
2. Too much freedom (But where do you draw the line?)
A wise man once said: "Your freedom to swing your fist ends where my nose begins" meaning, you're free to do what you want so long as you're not causing harm. But then again... abortions can harm either the mother (for not having it) or child (for having it), stem cell research destroys the embyo (although the umbilical cord stem cells are a new thing) yet it has the potential to fix things and there are other examples which are eluding me more and more as I get sleepier and sleepier... well that's my cue g'night everyone.

How about the fear that sooner or later, America wont be as powerful as it has been throughtout the 20th century. And that soon it could be crushed, either militarily or economically by rival powers.

“openly teach hatred and violence with impunity”…?!?
I don’t think so dude. We kick clerics out of the country who do that.
That would go against the oh so wonderful new incitement to racial hatred and violence laws which have limited our free speech. But then, even bad laws have positive sides.
In the US however, most of the Muslims are indistinguishable politically from Americans of other faiths and have assimilated into American culture. This makes most Americans not fear Islam or Muslims but to fear terrorist groups, be they Islamic terrorist groups or Christian or whatever else.
From my experience, many Americans seem incapable of understanding the difference between a Muslim and a terrorist.

Exactly the same can be said of Muslims in Britain.
I don't think American fears "Islam".
Many people in this thread alone disagree with you. You're just incapable of seeing you nation and fellow citizens in any negative light.
Its not nearly as simple as that and most Americans aren't that paranoid.
I agree it's not that simple, but the entire world is paranoid.

I think cellardoor is confusing British muslims with french ones, whom openly talk about overthrowing the government.
