But I can't figure out which one to watch first. Any suggestions?

Re-watched several old shows for memories sake this weekend; some Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and Case Closed. Hakusho and Kenshin are semi-amusing to watch again, but I'll never get tired of Case Closed and it's completely ludicrous murder schemes.

Well, if you actually know how Mahjong is played I see no reason for not going into Akagi first. That was my arguement anyway when I was deciding.

Really, just watch an episode of both and then pick whichever you find more engaging.

They're both pretty excellent.

Problem is, I've no idea how Mahjong works at all.

So I'm guessing I'll be completely confused with what's going on.

First off, you're gonna have to learn Riichi Mahjong, not Chinese or American. Luckily, it's pretty easy to get the basics, check here for the terms and rules.

Second, almost all of the complex moves are explained in the show itself, so you don't really need to be an expert or anything to enjoy it.

When i watched Akagi, i hardly had any clue about what they were playing, but it was still a great watch.
Kaiji is better though.

What's the difference between these series? Apparently, the manga have the same writer and the anime have the same director, studio, and network. Also, the only changes I can see in the main characters are name and hair color; they're even voiced by the same seiyu.

What I meant by that was the two characters have very similar facial features in the pictures on Wikipedia. I haven't been able to watch either series, so my knowledge of the characters is very limited.

One would think that such a concept would be fairly obvious.

Clearly, that's not the case.

That's exactly why I was asking about them. Rumiko Takahashi kinda used a cookie cutter approach when she created multiple series (InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura), so I was wondering if Nobuyuki Fukumoto showed more creativity. Perhaps that long face with the pointy nose and chin is just his unique drawing style, and the other things in common between them have little to do with the anime themselves - The same director, studio, network, and voice actor(s) could very well be evidence of a long-term contract, which has nothing to do with the actual series.

The faces are a long-time Fukumoto trademark, and having the same staff only makes sense since Fukumoto's works have always been steeped in his unique style and having a different-looking adaptation of one of his works probably wouldn't feel right.

The images I saw are on the Wikipedia pages.

This has dragged on too long, and I think we were nowhere near the original intent of my question. Wikipedia stated that Akagi is about Mahjong and Kaiji is about gambling, and I was hoping someone would elaborate on that.

So?

The sheer idiocy of your question made it seem a lot like you didn't read them at all.

There's no need to, all the info's on the Wiki page.

Just read about, holy shit.
Is it just an extra episode or the start of season 2?

"On May 17, 2009, TV Wakayama listed the eighth broadcasted episode of the re-broadcast as a new episode reported to air on May 24, 2009, though it was removed later."

I'll take it that it's just a teaser of sorts until they pump out season 2.

Man, this is way too late.

I was excited about the new series a year and a half, or two years ago. Something like that.

Now I just don't care. I don't want to watch any shows set in high schools any more.

It still intrigues me either way, it said to be 14 episodes again, but also contains the 1st season episodes in between so it's actually 28 episodes.

So really, the new episode is actually 8. So then that means I have to wait longer to actually "watch" the first episode (the new episode is due to release next month).

Forgetting about the new season, what does anyone think of Eden of the East?

Everything I see is just a image of my thoughts "Always looking for a better day..."

So Funimation picked up Spice and Wolf.

Time to sit back and watch audiences totally not get it.

That said, it'll still sell because WOLF GIRL IS MAI WAIFU and just about every new show Funi gets their hands on is marketed aggressively enough to move a few thousand units.
