Now on the thing about torture being boring...well honestly, have you ever been tortured? It adds a sense of an eerie atmosphere.
No, I haven't been, but what I'm trying to say, a bad writer can make ANYTHING boring. Torture isn't automaticaly exiting. Things don't just work like that.
But this is my opinion so, I can't really speak for anyone really. If you can relate to what I am trying to say, thanks for that.
I'm not actualyl really disagreeing with you, because I don't know anything about the show you talk about. I disagree with your odd tendency to try and rationalise taste.
Say I like characters with bandages, the logical conclusion is that I would really LOVE mummies. Yeah, it doesn't work like that.

So first let me start by saying that evil laughter, torturing, etc. is the pinacle of japanese horror. Watch some on Crunchyroll if you still wish to argue.
None of the Japanese horror stuff really involved "evil laughs", torture, yes, but as said, fiction writing isn't playing with JLego, you can't just stick a bunch of stuff together, and say it's good.
Yes I don't find the humor as funny as I liked but it is basic japanese humor that is almost used in alot of animes.
Being popular in Japan isn't an excuse. I personally don't watch anime to identify with the Japanese, I watch it to be entertained.
