So, I'm watching shaman king right now. It's pretty decent.
Kinda reminds me of yu yu hakusho mixed with hunter x hunter mixed with a less shitty soul eater.
I just watched the first episode of Chu-Bra! and I don't know what to say.
Am I a lesbian?
I just joined an Anime Club at my school, and I love it. (I just hate the other kids there. They should burn in hell.) But you guys are awesome!
Anyone else hate those anime site chatango chat boxes? They always piss me off. It's always either a bunch of 13 year olds cybering talking about naruto or a bunch of regulars sucking each other off. Then again, that's the internet.

The fuck? Fate bad in English? I prefer the Japanese audio if only because it makes alot more sense seeing how it takes place in Japan and the voices match better, but in no way is it bad. it's actually very well done. What are you talking about?
Also "reckoning" is not a good basis for actually knowing.

I've never watched a Gundam series before, I figure that I should probably watch one some time. If I ever do watch one, which should it be?
Yay! I just want to say everyone here I´m officially an otaku.
What´s up with yaoi club, it is a branch of the anime similar to the yuri. Shouldn´t it be in this club?

Technically, so should the Naruto and Bleach clubs, but they're separate and NG's custom BBS system doesn't allow for thread merging, so we're all stuck.

Well I didn´t know they have their own club, and yes they should be with this club, after all they are anime.

Technically they're anime... but they're not very good anime.
Speaking about horrible anime, Tsukihime.
IT DOESN'T EXIST, THERE IS NO TSUKIHIME ANIME.
i'd love to join, though i have read more manga than i have watched anime to be truthful. can i still join tho?
I've watched a few episodes of Gurren Lagan. I probably spelled that wrong. Gurren Lagen? Laegen? Whatever you know what I'm talking about.
Is this show supposed to be a parody or it is just weird as shit?

I really don't understand why people say stuff like this.
"Hey everyone, I'm officially an obsessive geek."

English is full of loanwords that mwan different from what the word means in the original language. And the word doesn't have as a negative connotation in Japanese as it had twenty years ago. It still has a negative connnotation, but considering "pedofiliac murderer" was a common connotation in the late 80's...

Hey man, I've been around Japanese teenagers.
I know what they use 'otaku' to describe.

Something akin to "pathetic wanker"? Believe me, it's an improvement of what it used to mean.
And still. When people adopt a term from another language, it generally changes part of its meaning, because the cultural context where the term is from, and the cultural context where its adopted are often different.
But seriously, compare the public opinion of people who play role playing games back int he 80's, and now. Back then, they were thought to be stan worshippers and psychopaths. now just fat neckbeards sitting in a basement. Neither view is positive, but one is more negative than the other.

This is an Anime Club, for good and bad animes.
I don´t know what´s the problem with this thing of otaku. At least I know in my country Otaku is a japanese term to refer to people with particular interests in anime, manga, and video games .In Japan, is considered one word to describe a fan of something, even some Japanese regard the use of the word an insult, that can be the reason you think is an insult Aegis.

I really don't know what your point is. I mean, I was using the modern meaning of the word 'otaku', not the 1980s meaning.

Yes. The reason I think it's an insult is because in Japanese the word is generally an insult.
Japanese has other words to describe fans of things. 'Otaku' is a word that is used to describe obsessive fans of things.
And the fact that, in English, you would describe your interests in Japanese media using a Japanese word just makes you sound like a ridiculous Japanophile.

Point being that the meaning of a word is not static. It changes over time, and over cultures, when it's borrowed. So I'm saying that western anime-and-japanese-pop-culture-loving teens using the word "Otaku" for themselves is not as weird as you make it to be.
Besides, don't Japanses Otaku use the term for themselves/eachother?
But semantics debate aside. Grave of the Fireflies; masterpice, depressing.

*sigh* Anime fandom is not in any way unique in this. Many subcultures centered around foreign works (in music, usually) often borrow elements of the source culture. Isn't it just enough you don't use the term yourself? People inside the fandom differ from eachother, people have different labels.
As for syaing one doesn't need labels, you kinda do. Everyone you meet is not going to know your entire life story, so you need to condence it a bit.
At 1/14/10 06:50 PM, JohnnyWang wrote: Everyone you meet is not going to know your entire life story, so you need to condence it a bit.
When I meet people, I usually don't head a description of myself with 'oh yeah, I'm a fan of anime'.
I've got more important things to talk about.
Are everyone here always so unpleasant here? I just wanted to say that otaku is a synonym for a little bit more exaggerated fan, it was also my fault that I did not know exactly what it was. I'm not obsessed with it let´s just say I spend half of my free time watching anime, reading manga and I like video games, but I'm not hooked. As for the other things otaku make, like going to conventions and dress up characters are things I don´t like because I hardly leave my house and I am very calm. (it´s also for noobs)
I also thought I was one because they say that an Otaku has a list of known animes to see to become one and I saw what it is need.

You shouldn't be labelling yourself anyway.
Labels are for chumps.
Of course my hobbies aren't the first thing I mention when meeting new people either. I'm just saying that a certain amount of labels is needed. That being said, I don't call myself an otaku; over here that implies a general interest in japanese pop culture (anime, manga, cosplay, j-pop and -rock, videogames etc.)

Over here, I've never heard the word 'otaku' used in speech (outside of a Japanese class, when talking about Japanese culture). I'm guessing the vast majority of the country's teenagers have no idea what it means.
I'd never even heard of the word before I went to Japan.
It seems like, if I were so inclined, labelling myself as an 'otaku' would just add time explaining, rather than saving time by using speech-based shorthand.

Agreed, all labelling does is make you look like a conformist who has to force themselves into a group in order to feel like they belong in society. It's better to forget about labels and let people know who you are based on your unique traits rather than what you have in common with others.
Anyway, aren't we supposed to talking about anime?
So, myself and a few of the guys from the anime board on Spoony's forum riffed on anime today. shit was hysterical... if painful. Did the first 3 episodes of Tsukihime and the first of TOKKO. So far I found out I am MUCH better at scripting than I am at randomly shooting the shit.
So what did you guys do today?
