My monitor isn't working, more details I have some files on there I'd like to get off, can anyone help with transfering files without seeing the screen?

A bad analogy is like a leaky screwdriver.

I have this guys problem, except I haven't recently updated. I've tried booting a new OS from CD but my laptop won't let me. I have Ubuntu dual-booted on the laptop, which is what I'm using now. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?

Ok, so the laptop works with another screen while the xp loading screen is going on but not once it is booted up. Thats good, it means that you can still access the laptop. I want you to look at the f keys on your laptop and look for one that looks like a screen. This is normally on f5.

Once windows has loaded up press the fn key and f (mointor key) toghther and it should change the display to the other mointor.

If this dosent work post back here with your laptop make and model number

Okay, ive "fixed" the first problem, but I had to reinstall windows. It was due to a hard drive reading driver that was corrupted, and that wasnt a big deal since I have all my files on an external drive and back up everything else. However, it was fine for the first 2 days or so but now I can boot it up in windows, and now the processor stops after about a minuite of being in vista, regardless of what I am doing. and the funny thing is, it dosnet give any warning of doing so (slowing down, programs becoming unresponsive, etc) so it will crash without fail weather im not doing anythign at all or using it normally. I might try reinstalling again or repairing it but I have no idea what would be causing the problem or really how to fix it.

Below is copypasta from my thread

Hi, I'm not sure if this would be the appropriate place to post in, but I'm having a little issue with my screen resolution right now.

Every time I turn off the computer, I go back on the next day and my resolution will go from 1280x960 to around 800x600.

This started happening after I updated my NVIDIA card drivers. I made sure my card was compatible, I tried re installing which worked for awhile until I just turned on the computer a few minutes ago.

Google didn't really have any fixes either so I already tried Google.

I know resolution isn't much of a serious problem, but it's just annoying to have to find your screen all huge and have to rearrange everything back to where they were, again and again every morning.

System Specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Intel Duo Core @ 3.00GHz
2046 RAM
DirectX 11
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Current Display Mode: 1280x960 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
Driver Version: 8.16.0011.9107

If there is any other information needed, please ask for it and I will provide it as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Well I don't know how to revert back, but for now it's been fine the last 2 days. I'll be sure to post here again if it repeats.

Ok, I now have a dead hard drive so I got a new one, but vista was stored on the old (now broken) one, and even the recovery partition is destroyed, and I don't have any repair disks, just a product key. So can I somehow send off for a vista CD with my product key or will I have to buy a new copy? At the moment I'm running a beta of windows 7 (and it keeps reminding me it's a beta every 5 seconds) and with the same problem the other guy said, it says the resolution is 1280 x 800 but looks around 800 x 600, although that's probably cause of the operating system. I mainly just want to get a
proper operating system on there.

My problem is in regards to tuneup utilities 2010:

Following the 2010 update (I upgraded from the 2009 version and yes both were actually paid for, not cracked), tuneup utilities seems unable to change the log on screen for windows and always shows the official log on screen.

Here is some miscellaneous info. I believe will help.
1) The tuneuptheme service is on.
2) Even if I tell the program to change to the official windows log on screen, it will not check it; instead it will simply keep checked the desired background but not register it as being the new log on screen.
3) 90% of the time, if I do the above the program will stop working temporarily.

I have indeed contacted the tuneup tech support, but the response I got was to turn on the service; however, I have yet to get back a new response (1 week) about my current issue. :(

Thanks in advance.

no, but on a different partition.

anyway, I figured out the problem, I still had the release candidate (used it on a virtual pc, but I couldnt get the internet to work so I uninstalled again)

so I burned at a lower speed and noticed I now had the windows 7 loading screen instead of the vista one when booting from the disk.

it still didnt work (4x speed) but I got something further (it stayed on 0% for 4 hours)

today I burned it again with toast instead of disk utility (yep, Im burning it on a mac but I installed it on a pc) and tried it on my mac in a virtual pc again (wich didnt work at first either) and now it works, so Im gonna wait till my sister goes away from the pc so I can install, but I think I have it now.

thank you anyway!

I have fixed the screen resolution problem simply by updating the drivers from the HP website (or whatever type of pc you have) And I am still using the windwos 7 beta, cant decide weather it is worth buying the full version. I have a vista licence key, but need an instalation since it is on my dead hard drive. I did try and email microsoft about the problem but you have to pay £46 just to email them. So I might just see how I survive on the beta until I get enough money to buy the full version. (when I upgrade it, does it search my system for previous operating systems or can I enter my product key?)

My comp crashed back in July and I got it back and works and all but whenever I try to right click in firefox it won't bring up the right click menu. It allows right click everywhere but on the web page itself.

Any solution for this?

I believe I have a virus, when booting up firefox I can use it for about 5 Mins before all hell breaks loose, webpages jumble, text on the computer disappears avg cant update all programs give error messages task manager only opens with ctrl alt esc any file download offline like housecall corrupts during installation and some off the white backgrounds go black. Upside is I believe I know where I picked up the virus , is there any way if I can test a website for viruses so I can find what and where this thing could be hiding so I can get rid of it. I'm on a ps3 right now and was trying to figure out what the problem was for a while now.

If you want to attempt this problem conservatively, you can try to put another antivirus setup onto a jump drive and try to run it when you start up, BEFORE starting any other process. If that works, you should be able to find what file(s) are giving you shit.

You could also try deleting the file(s) that you think are giving you shit, without running any sort of scan. Personally, I dont think I would necessarily try that one. Up to you on this call.

If you want to take this problem balls deep, reformat and try to boot up from a recovery disc. Please, please, please only attempt this fix at the end of the line, it's somewhat lengthy. It will fix it, but if you dont backup what you want to backup, you're SOL. Reformatting wipes the hard drive and you'll need to boot windows from a disc.

You want to keep around 10GB free. You shouldn't see any measurable slowdown until around 30GB free. which is where you are at right now. But any slowdowns you notice would probably happen because of the fact virtual memory (memory on the hard drive) is being used, not because of the lack of hard drive space.

Hey guys - having problems, hope you can help.

So I'm wanting to give Ubuntu a try. I've downloaded the crap and put it on a disc.

I did the option to 'help me' load Ubuntu from boot because I saw no option to do so when I restarted my pc.

I now get the option to chose which OS I want to use. However, the problem is that my keyboard doesn't register anything until after the counter has expired and vista has begun running. Thus making it impossible to chose Ubuntu.

I'm using a Logitech Classic Keyboard
It's a USB keyboard.

There's a whole lot of things written on the back that I don't understand but may help you help me.

M/N : Y-UR83
P/N : 820-001641
PID : SY824UK

I've tried googling for drivers but the Logitech website tells me none exist and I'm dubious about downloading from other sources after I've been told this?

The OS I'm currently using is
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Service Pack 2

Any help would be great.

Thanks, guys.

also, I have the problem that I bought a pc with a "quad core" cpu, which turned out to be a dual cpu core 2 duo, no problem, but my vista installation (home basic 32 I think, the version that does support 4GB RAM) didn't support dual cpu.
now I have windows 7 ultimate 64, it still uses only 1 cpu, if I press hardware manager it shows 2 cpu's and most games run pretty good (crysis on high, mwf2 on extra), but I think it only uses 1 of them

This is because of the way games work. Most games before 2006 didnt have the cabapilty to 'talk' to multiple cpu cores so would use only 1 core at 100% while the operating system assigned all other tasks to the other core.

This increased gaming performance as it gave the game the full speed of a core, Modern games like cod6 and l4d 2 use 2 or more cores because they are multi-threaded which means they can 'talk' to more than 1 core at a time.

It is nothing to worry about

I mainly play computer games in the simulation genre. I need a new computer, and there are two I am willing to buy. There are nearly the same. I'm assuming you will suggest the quad core but I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes overall (I know it makes some difference)
HP Pavillion: $569
RAM 6GB
HD 640GB
Processor Intel Pentium 2.6GHZ

HP Pavillion from different store: $599
RAM 6GB
HD 640GB
Processor AMD Athlon II Quad Core 2.6GHZ

I know the quad core is better and 30 dollars isnt much of a differecne but is it worth 30 more? Id like to get the AMD one but my mom wants to save money so i want to make sure its worth it.

BTW I already have a graphics card (256MB)
