Yes, you could get one of those wristbands, or make one yourself. But as long as you touch your case before working inside your computer to ground yourself and don't rub your socks against the carpet, you should be fine. Just take off your socks if you are working on carpet. My place is really dry so I generate lots of static, but a simple touch to the case solves it.

In highschool I used to work in a computer repair shop, and in my "office" , I used old parts from the shop to build a machine I could use at work. Mostly just for burning driver CDs, looking stuff up online, and working with hard drives externally, as well as to test potentially faulty equipment...

Anyways, it didn't have a case. Instead I had a cork board up on the wall and mounted all the pieces into this board. It was super ghetto. Without the power button from the case, I actually started it every day with a screwdriver by contacting the proper pins..

Unless you are using your computer in a similar situation, where you are constantly changing out hardware and don't care if any of it breaks suddenly, I would never recommend building a machine without a case. It's just not worth the risk. And besides, some of the cases out there are pretty sweet.

Sorry for the late reply.

At 6/10/08 01:30 PM, Wylo wrote: The XXX_FANs in the picture are used to plug in fans (If you decide to add more fans to your computer). The first part of the fan name is just there to name the fan. Like the PWR_FAN simply is its name, most likely named because it is close to the 24 pin power slot. The CHA (Chassis) Plug is named because most people use the bottom plug on motherboards for a fan that is mounted on the side of their case. And the CPU fan plug is usually used for the fan on top of the CPU.

So you don't need to plug anything into any of those connectors unless you want to plug in fans.

Aha, well now I know it's all good seeing as I have the CPU fan plugged in. I do have another case which has a fan on the back with two 4 pin molex connectors. One male, one female. It's below a stock PSU which isn't suitable for my motherboard. That can easily be removed before hand. I'm confused where this rear fan goes. I would assume the male molex would go into one of the PSU female molex connector. However that leaves the rear fan female molex as there's nowhere to put it. Unless of course there is no need to connect this. Forgive me for using male/female if I got it wrong. I use these terms for the real panel connectors.

I could move my contents of my computer into that seeing as my current case is a little old but very reliable. It could be a little work.

One thing I may suspect is that the stock heatsink and fan over the CPU isn't positioned correctly. It came with thermal paste already on the base. All the instructions were some pictures rather than text. That's how it cooled down before, just by moving wirings and repositioning the Heatsink and fan. The problem is that there's a huge series of wires going over the CPU fan and the furthest I can get from the fan is to tuck it loosely on the side.

How do you check your temps? Use the latest Everest Beta. Its THE best software out there for measuring temps, even better than most of the cards' manufacturer's software. It comes with a whole bunch of other good info too.

I used PC probe 2 (it came on the motherboard disc)
I tried SpeedFan, I think that's what it's called.
Also my BIOS.

I did try Everest once but I'm a little afraid to use it. I must of accidentally told it to overclock thus sending the temps for my CPU up to 160 centigrade, it also messed with my voltages. But this was a while ago and the computer is doing fine other than putting it under stress.

Picture of it would be best but I think what you are describing is a pass-through connector. Pass-through connectors allow the computer builder to connect the device (in this case, the fan) they want without losing the availability of a 4-pin Molex connector. Think of it like daisy-chaining. The male side connects to the PSU and the female side is left disconnected or connected to another thing you plug in.

Definitely need pictures for this one. You shouldn't be able to or have to move the heatsink once its mounted on properly. Cable management, while good, does not matter too much in terms of temperature. As long as the wires aren't blocking the fan from spinning, just moving them to the side is fine.

Ya, so we need to see if that heatsink is mounted on properly. PC Probe II is junk, ASUS Bios temp monitor is junk, Speedfan is simple and relatively easy to use but sometimes inaccurate. Any temperature monitoring software can be off a bit, but 160 degrees is a little too off. Everest doesn't do anything to your comp except read the data.

You can't hear it spin up when u turn your comp on or your system does not recognize it before or after formatting it. You can tell if its in the process of dying if u hear it making loud noises or your data gets corrupted easily.

Well it's more of a DOA thing, is there a way to tell if its dead, like it won't appear in the BIOS or something

If it doesn't appear in the BIOS but you hear the drive running, then I would assume it is dead. Basically, if the hard drive is installed correctly, formatted correctly, but isn't functioning like it should then you should be concerned about it.

Sigh.

Okay, so about my optic drive - when I try to load up the Windows Install disk, it doesn't start it up. disk fault, or optic drive fault?

Um, hmm. hard to say. I've had problems with my cdrom drive with Windows disks. You could blame all of the above and your BIOS settings. All I can suggest for that problem is if you have another computer to test your disk, and your optical drive. Also, make sure you are booting from the disk by either setting your BIOS to boot from CD first, or if you are like me, you have the option during the POST (by pressing F12) that lets you pick what to boot from.

I recently had to reboot my PC [don't ask, I'm stupid] but I've found upon starting it up again that I've got a lot of graphical problems.

When I'm scrolling a page it buffers and goes down in chunks, which is really frustrating. My PC also won't let me play DVDs. I get something about "create overlay failure".

I've got no idea what the problem could be, I installed all of the drivers and whatnot that came with the PC, and other than that I'm stumped.

Help?

Both problems might be related. It is obvious that your video driver isn't installed correctly/ isn't installed at all. That's why you are getting screen refreshing lag, especially while scrolling a page, when most of the screen is changing.

I'm not sure what program you are using for playing DVDs, but a quick google search yielded these possible solutions (for a particular program, but I think they will help).

Well what about your video drivers? The lag you are experiencing is most definitely a lack of video driver. You may think you installed them all, but it is obvious that you didn't. Try looking for your video driver disc.

Well, I'm still very unfamiliar with the SS virus. (*cough* Linux user). But this thread seemed helpful.

I suppose I should try this thread as well. I accidently deleted my SFUsetup.msi and would like to replace it, this is just a copy paste from my first thread:

It seems I have deleted a needed file from my PC last night while trying to free up some space on my program files drive. Now whenever I try to right click and view how much space is left on my C drive, this window pops up twice before showing me. It is looking for the file SFUSetup.msi

Now, I know you're probably going to tell me just to fucking google it, but I have googled a little bit, and haven't found where I can get this file. Some background information on what this file is would also be nice.

If someone could tell me where I could get this file, or possibly even email me YOUR file, that would be most appreciated.

I am trying to open ports "6112" to "6119" (WC3 ports) and when I go to check enable after doing all the steps, it says "You cannot use the Router IP, network or internet broadcast address.

Anyone know what the hell this exactly means?

I'm not sure you can, I have that happen to me ocasionally. Just try it a few times and if it still doesn't work then just reboot.

Hey, I have a not exactly a problem but a question that's been on my mind for some time...

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, quad core 2.4 ghz (q6600), nvidia 8800 GT 512 megs, and 4 gigs of ram.

Now, I realize that with 32 bit vista I can only have 3 gigs of ram (and that is what my system properties tell me - three gigs.) That's fine, and I'm okay with that... When I go on systemrequirementslab.com and scan my computer for any game, it tells me I have 1.7 GBs of video ram, rather than the 512 megabytes. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, I am curious as to why this occurs (and if its true... nice to know that extra gig doesn't go to waste).

Thanks.

No video card produced has 1.7GB of RAM. Must be some bad info your video card/computer giving to the website. There shouldn't be a problem functional-wise but If you think there's a problem contact the manufacturer of your card.

I realize this, I know for a fact that my video card has 512 megabytes, I was wondering if there was some way that my extra gig of ram (not utilized since I have 32-bit windows) was being added to my VRam...

I want to update this... I just opened Dxdiag, and...see for yourself:

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 8800 GT
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0611&SUBSYS_C80238 42&REV_A2
Display Memory: 1778 MB
Dedicated Memory: 499 MB
Shared Memory: 1278 MB

Current Mode: 1920 x 1200 (32 bit) (59Hz)
Monitor: ViewSonic VX2835wm

If you look at the underlined lines, it seems its used 1 gig of my ram for use with video ram, in addition to the 512 megs it has. The question is, is it using my un-used ram or some of the ram used for my computer currently?

http://www.hardforum.com/archive/index.p hp/t-1252354.html
The ram is shared, but not dedicated, and is only used if needed. I guess that means its not using my extra gig. *sigh*... Maybe I'll just get vista 64 bit.

Hey guys. I'm back!
Looks like you guys did a good job lookin after the thread, much appreciated to all who contributed.

Planting trees was a blast, and now I've got some time to myself before I start school again in September.

I made a compilation video from the season, if anyone is interested in seeing exactly what it is I've been doing. There's some pretty cool stuff:

And on a more related note, I reformatted and upgrade my laptop! Looks pretty spiffy I think
