It depends. Sometimes, i suddenly have an idea. I hurry and note down the idea.
Sometimes, i just make some various experiments and when i come up with something i think is worth the effort, i hurry and note down what i got.

I make my music with blood, sweat, and tears... and cupcakes.

I tend to go from scrath and make up beats as I go along, or when I hear a song that I like I try to recreate it with making it sound to similar :)

I get up, drink coffee and smoke cigarettes til i get an idea. Sometimes i get no ideas at all, so i just watch anime or play violent bloody games til somehow, through a roundabout way, i arrive in the zone. Or not, but either way, i had fun that day :P
