I mean seriously, they are within easy flying distance from NK and are the biggest enemy Kim Jong has in the region. As a non-nuclear power, japan still has a much more advanced millitary than Kim, but if he gets nukes into missles that superiority is gone. I say they try and strike a deal with China to let them take him out now.

Japan has a problem with that.
After WWII when the US whipped on them they sort of made them sign a new constitution (I think) that prevents them from enacting war. They can defend themselves in anyway shap form or fashion, but can't enact war.

The Japanese military is severely limited by Article 9 of the Japanese constitution which states: "The Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes" and that "land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained.
Source Wikipedia.
Japan maintains a self defense force, but could never successfully assault N Korea. N Korea has a huge military, and lets not forget the whole world teamed up to beat N Korea and tied them. Japan lacks alot of the units required to invade N Korea, especially marine units, and since japan is an island this presents a problem for them.
No tto mention any war with N Korea willr esult in the destruction of much of S Korea in the first few days from shelling. N Korea has set up thousands of of rockets along the border, while individual they would each only get off a few volleys before the US warplanes destroy them, their sheer numbers would destroy most of Souel and much of S Korea.

It is a bad idea anyways. North Korea already has nukes. If you suddenly attack the regime, not only will they attack you with some of their nukes, but whatever is left over when the regime falls is up for grabs. You do not want nukes falling into the hands of vengeful warlords or worse. I think isolation is the only good way to deal with them right now

North Korea doesn't have a nuclear bomb, it has a nuclear firecracker.
but whatever is left over when the regime falls is up for grabs.
You're running on the assumption that North Korea has vast stockpiles of Nuclear arms built up rivaling the The United State's own stockpile. There's no evidence to support that, and for all we know the one they set off on the 9th WAS their nuke.
I think isolation is the only good way to deal with them right now
Yeah, lets whip some more economic sanctions on them, I think they're people have grown a taste for eating dirt by now...

I saw on the BBC today N. Korean school kids had to eat grass when their school ran out of food….which happened regularly.
So turn of phrase or not, you weren’t far off.

Of course, the rational thing to do to a nuclear armed country is attack them. Especially an attack from a country without nuclear weapons. Smart.

1) Long time ago
2) North Korea started the war and had a huge advantage on UN forces initially
3) Back then North Korea was the industralized part of Korea
4) 1,000,000 Chinese died in the war
5) Russia helped North Korea alot

Hyundais <sp> tend to actually last pretty well as a car. As my mechanic told me, they are made by Koreans, to be driven by Koreans, on Korean roads on Korean gas, they can take a decent beating.

Let's just hope that they test fire one of these things and blow themselves up, then the whole nuclear program is over. Anyways everyone is so shocked the NK has nuclear warheads, it's not like we dont have them.

They have never bothered to invade them since the Korean war because NK was backed by China and USSR. Indeed, the US/UN forces were never able to land the killing blow because China was by that point flooding the pennesula with soldiers.
Since the cold war ended, they havent bothered to go to war because China vetos any attempt to do so. Granted, China wont defend korea if war did break out (indeed, NK is now a headache to them, as china is now more interested in making money with the west), but they dont want a war starting there because it would distrupt stability in the region, and refugees would flood into manchuria. Same goes with japan and south korea, as if a war breaks out they are at risk of damage.

Even a 20 kiloton nuclear weapon is a moderate sized tactical nuke. Not even really viable in a strategic theater.
Think you're pretty clever...

Why don't the Japanese just change their constitution? That way, they can have a real military presence in the East and North Korea and Japan can have their very own mini-Cold War.
Because we helped to install thier Constitution after WW2, and if they changed it without authority from us, they risk pissing us off, and maybe losing valuable defense from us.
You got to remember, Japan is a close as we get in Asia, there our biggest ally there. We benifit there, they benifit there, it's a mutual exchange.
