I'm English (partly) and i always pronounce my 'H's even considering i live in Hull, the bastard city of the world.

Anyway, you can't just say that one nation speaks a language more properly than another, it's just idiotic. Each nation is filled with many differing dialects and accents which render the English language dead.

anyway, Americans pronounce (and spell) and word that starts with 'paed..' as 'ped' thus rendering the meaning of child into foot.

that is mainly in the south-west. if you are getting this thought from our news reporters all over our country, they are trained to talk like that. exept the ones from the south-west.

remember, we too have alot of diffrent dialects too. but it is mainly the south-west accent that pronounces everything. we have a kind of neutral accent.

Americans don't speak English, they speak American. For some reason words have been changed.

Oh, and about the British being hard to understand...that's probably because most Americans don't live in Britain and therefore you aren't used to the accents. Although I agree that a lot of English people murder the language, not all do.

It could be argued that neither America or Britain speaks the best English, because quite often you find that foreign people speak better English.

I can completely understand what the middle class and upper class Brits are saying. It's just all the teenagers and people in their 20's seem to try and talk like American Rappers. "Why iz U mad??"

However, on alot of British TV shows I couldn't really grasp what the fuck they were saying.

Many times broadcast journalists are sent to the mid west to learn to pronounce words. I believe it is near Ohio that is considered to have the most understandable form the english language. It may be Illinois though. The west coast has a few wierdities. Californians elongate their short O sounds to an alomost OA sound. Northwest has a real hard R that I seem to have picked up much to my dismay. You can realy hear it in the AR sound like in the word car. The south has it's own thing going on and are totaly convinced that everyone else has an accent. Parts of Louisiana even have thick French accents. The far north tends to show a lot of Sweedish and German influence. Particularly the long O sound. The east coast has probably the second most distiguishable accent with either absent or increadibly soft R sounds and O sounds that sound like A sounds. They also tend to speak very rough their speach sounds very hard and unforgiving.

No one speaks good English unless they are trying to speak very clearly and are speaking more slowly than normal.

A simple sentence like "Do you want to go to the mall?" would normally get butchered as "Dwana godadah mall?" by any ordinary person who is not trying to speak particularly clearly. Then, add in accents like a southern accent and you end up with something horrendous like "Dwuhnuh gourduhra moll?" That's not English, that's gibberish!

Rappers. "Why iz U mad??"

lol no they don't, you must of met some rum cunts when you came here.

I did meet alot of 'rum cunts'. But I also met alot of middle-class people ages 16-21 and they resemble what we call "wiggers" here in the US. They immitate rappers and talk like they were born and raised in the ghettos in America.

Are you talkin about chavs cause they don't talk anything like american, they talk as if there all BRIXTON yardies, there wankers. More of a mix between Jamacan an Cockney. lol. There wankers

Yeah there were alot of "Chavs". That is what the preppy-type Brits called them. But the incredibly snobby Brits pissed me off as well with all their "Hmm, yes, quite so" and crap like that.

As for RP english or (BBC english) only about 3% of Britain talk like that, Most people talk with there regional accent, Scouse, London,Brummi,Geordie, Hard to understand any of them unless your from there.

The different dialects didn't really confuse me. I could still understand what most people were saying pretty well other than subcultures of Chavs or what the Scotts called "neds" and what Londoners called "scallies".

But there was one occasion when It took me seriously about 5 minutes to get directions from a store clerk to where the nearest Liquor store is. He finally gave me a coherent reply and it ended up leading me to a pub where I had to pay 3 pounds for a fucking shot.

Speaking of which, your liquor prices are ridiculous in the UK! But that is a seperate issue.

I'm a student in England but I'm from N.Ireland originally. I'm in the North of England and there are definitly some strong accents here. But I think that's interesting! Besides to be honest my accent is worse sounding probably. LOL.Question: To most texans speak like Bush? How on earth do they keep a straight face when talking? (just kidding lol!)
Somwone earlier talked about shakespeare, basically what he wrote was definitly the norm back then, and he even invented his own words alot of the time. But think in 400 years people will probably think WE speak very posh english... God help us.... o_0

Some Texans talk like President Bush but others speak High American English like what you hear on CNN or in American movies. But interestingly enough, some Texans don't even speak English at all (damn illegal immigrants).

Everyone calls them chavs, the tramps to the queen, the word for them is chavs. So piss of with that Preppy bollocks. And everyone hates the snobby posh english people, as much as you probably hate the way Frasier Craine talks. Same difference

Theres Chavs in every town in the country, a chav in liverpool would talk scouse, a chav in newcastle would speak geordie. And Scallies is what they call em up north. an chavs are what there called in the south. since the word Chav originated in London it's Cockney i can't remember wat it means. But Chav has generally taken over Scallies i think, Scallies is wat they were called 20 od years ago.

An i bet if you did talk to other people besides the rich cunts you see whilst traveling the world, you'd notice a huge difference. Anyway get out of London it's full of rich pricks.

one thing i've found thats pretty weird is that where i live (northwest scotland) a lot of people speak with an accent closer to american or canadian. scots gaelic was the only language spoken here only a few generations ago so in that short time no accent has properly developed. everything is pronounced very americany.

My understanding is that the Midwest region of the US has the most "generic" sounding English of the nation. Or we're the area that has NO twangs, accents, or other speech irregularities.

From what I hear, actors/actresses come up to the midwest to try and rid themselves of their accents for certain movie roles.

I tried to find the report….but couldn’t

Anyway, supposedly, my area of Scotland, in and around Inverness speaks the most coherent English to other brits.

I don’t know about this….i don’t have much of an accent myself, but most do….and I don’t understand what the fuck they’re on about half the time.

The only reason I bought a damn shot in a pub was because the douchebag couldn't give me directions to the Liqour store. But even when I did buy some whiskey and beer at an actual liqor store it was alteast 3 times as expensive as it is here in the US, when you calculate the exhange rate between Dollars and Pounds.

I'm from Martha's Vineyard, MA. We have our own dialect of the American-English language, although I don't share it anymore. It's similar to the "New Bedfuhd" accent. Good stuff, nontheless.

And not all Americans speak better English. I was actually convinced of the opposite, as even the most ignorant British people I've met have seemed to have a great understanding of the English language and a great vocabulary. I suppose it's all related to who we have easier access to.

Americans prenounce words differently like aluminimum.

it is my personal opinion that American should be considered a different language because it is so diverse.

and its exactly the same in england we have dialects and standard english accents. "queens english" is actually quite rare and no american speaks it, not at all not ever

What? I don’t see how Americans speak better English. We invented it. We made the words and pronunciations. So if there any verbal anomalies it came from your end of the pond.

Fargo is not acurate in that only those who are very near the Canadian boarder talk that way. They do say yea and sure a lot though.
