I fucking hate parents who buy 4x4's just to take there kids to school. I'm not talking about small 4x4's like Freelander and Suzuki. Also I mean proper off roader’s not like the BMW X3.
Why buy a 4 litre twin turbo just to take a 4 and 6 year old quarter a mile to school. What is the fucking point? If they need the space then buy an estate, people carrier or even a big saloon.
It pisses me off when someone buys a 4x4 and never takes it off road. That’s what there built for. Not to take little Tammy and Bob to school. Not for rich bitch boy racer to cruise around a city with. Not for businessmen in there mid-life crises. Not for a hypochondriac to feel safe in them because there big and muscled. Well quite frankly there not anymore. If you crash it will have a crumple zone like all other cars. You will get hurt in them. There not built with huge ball bars and designed to soften anything it comes in contact with. My dad has a 4x4 from the early 80's (and yes he takes it off road) I don’t even like going in front of it even when its parked because I know I'd rather get hit by next doors X-trail because that thing has plastic everywhere and its model has tones of safety tests. The 80's metal box probably didn’t have as much.
The point is if you don’t need a 4x4. DONT BUY ONE. They guzzle petrol and take up space on roads. Have you ever tried get passed a school to work/college at 9? PAIN IN THE FUCKING ARSE!!!

So you followed people around for an entire year and they did no off-road at all?

I completely agree with this. It's total bullshit how some of these idiots with one or two kids buy an SUV. Then they drive it 25 miles to work everyday or some stupid shit like that. You don't need a huge inefficient car to get to work everyday.
Fine buy an SUV. But use it for off-road fun, camping, skiing, or other various activities where the space is needed. Don't use it to go to work everyday, that's just wastefull and bad for the environment.

Well, it's their money, let them do anything they want with it, unless of course, it includes an illegal activity.

I suppose you're right, but it just wastes everyone elses gasoline when these assholes find it neccessary to drive a 5.7 litre V8 to work everyday.
I like cars a lot too but I think people should use the powerful cars for fun and recreation and the efficient cars for daily work routine. It would save a lot more gas.

The Hummer H2, Explorer, Expedition, X3, RX300, Escalade, etc... are not true offroading vehicles. They would perform terrible in actual bumpy and uneven conditions. The true offroading pedigree comes from Jeep and Land Rover, and even they have their low-end models which are pretty shitty in offroad conditions.
Anyway, that's not the point, the point is a lot of people don't do their homework for buying cars. The only factors they take into consideration are these:
1. Looks
2. Price
3. Name
4. Fuel efficiency (and that's a big maybe)
Some people don't care about these or don't even know about some of these factors:
1. Practicality
2. Fuel efficiency
3. Literage
4. Cylinders
5. Horsepower
6. Torque
7. Safety rating (this includes crash and rollover)
8. Weight
9. Aspiration
10. Etc...
So in essence what you have are very ignorant consumers who buy name-brand cars that look nice, won't leave a permanent dent in their wallet and maybe won't be gas guzzlers.
If they'd done their homework they would have found the new Volkswagen Golf holds just as many passengers as some SUV's and wastes MUCH LESS gas and is much less expensive. The new honda civic also looks much sleeker and is famous for its fuel efficiency. In fact just about all Hondas are pretty much ULEV or SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle). And they aren't as extravagantly expensive as a huge SUV.
It just goes to show the kind of culture we're living in where people percieve these huge machines as being something for everyday use. I don't care if th ey can afford to pay for them or not, if they're putting a stranglehold on the environment and oil they affect me.

Well, I suppose if you’re going to be fat, you might as well be the fattest.

I just want to weigh in on this topic really quick. If you do go off-roading, we know that large, green, flat, field might be really fun to go muddin' through, but consider the person who owns the field and makes a living off of the plants you're killing.....

I guess it's fashions, wait and see how long it takes for everything to change and suddenly everyone has the same vehicle again.
But yes, it is ridiculous. They should be bought in a different way to normal cars, so that people can actually prove they need one. I often see them when they are totally unnecessary to be there.
I hardly ever come here anymore....

A field? Pal people in 4x4's go up steep hills and on dirt tracks that they’ve never gone on before. A flat field are you mental?

As long as I avoid schools at 9am I'm not fussed about off roaders. But its on their head when fuel is $8 per gallon.

No, I'm not mental. I'm from Kansas, where apparently the only use for a jeep is to drive through somebody's winter wheat that they were barely gonna make ends meet with anyway...

You need to get your ass to Scotland or something. I go there on my holiday, borrow a Land Rover off a friend or I rent one and go trekking on the Moore as they call them. E.g. find a fucked off size hill and go up it. And I've only crashed 3 times...ish. Well the forth didn’t count because when I got on the country road to go back to the pub where I was staying I met a bus. We both decided in the end it was both of our faults. Its a 36 year old Land Rover so Keith didn't even care :)

GTA3 summed it up perfectly:
"I'm a marketing manager who lives in the suburbs and commutes to work on the highway. I live alone, so of course I needed a car that can seat 12 and is equipped to drive across arctic tundra...it just makes me feel better! The new Maibatsu Monstrosity...mine's bigger!"
