Samsung Q1 + M-Audio Audiophile external sound card + MK-461c = Modulare software synthesis hybrid. Thats all i've ever needed and ever will need.
Synths are good, but to produce using real synths is expensive and obsolete. Hardware synths only truely have place in live performance these days.

DOUBLE POST.
Also, those microkorgs really arnt that great. They're overpriced for what they are, the vocoder patches are pretty bad and they don't have any customisable oscillators. For live performance, they're fine, but the tiny keys and limited patches really cut them out of recording.

ive used synths before, tho khuskan is right, synths are only used nowadays in a live environment but even then a powerful pc and controllor keyboard will do the same job as any piece of hardware you can think of.

As computers get faster and software synths become cheaper and more powerful, you will see a large migration from hardware to software synths (which has begun now). Generally, the artists that use hardware synths are the older ones, who have a particular one they love, or don't know how to use software synths.
Just because this is an amateur site doesn't mean no one uses them or knows about them. As Khuskan said, Hardware synths are obsolete, and become outdated very quickly. You may be able to find a forum that is more geared towards hardware over software.

I'm not entirely sure, I think I have OCD when it comes to collecting things. I tend to collect things I don't need. You should see my bus ticket collection. 200+ bus tickets. I can't bring myself to throw them away.
I've just started collecting gameboys. I don't know why. All I know is I want more.
As for synths...I like to surround myself with tecnology I guess :). They're fun to tinkle on when I'm bored. Most people don't know this, but I really wish I could play the piano. It's been even worse ever since mums new boyfriend re-located his Roland digital piano over here. It feels nice to play :). It's enjoyable to mess around on it for 10 or so minutes before I head out to uni or something.
Anyway, went off on a tangent. Resume conversation.

i would if i could fucking afford them. instead of spending $500-$3000 on a real synth, i can search google for a few minutes and find virtual versions of the same synth, FOR FREE!
check these out, YES THEY ARE FREE! VSTi versions of the MiniMoog and ARP 2600
these are pretty cool (and free) too just select one of the things listed under instruments

A real minimoog will always be more fun to play with than a softsynth. It's just the whole thing about it being THERE. And you can twiddle with the knobs and stuff. And hug it. And a real minimoog still sounds better than software emulation :)

I would have used a real synth if I could afford it, but right now I'm extremely short on cash.
The ones I like the best are the Clavia Nord Leads, they are great. Check it out.
I have had a look at cheaper synths (MicroKorg etc.), but the build quality equals 10$ toys, what's up with that?

You know what? I've got no idea :/. The MicroKorg is a pretty pricey piece of equipment, but I have played toy pianos which had better keys :S.
I'm just assuming they've packed the thing with custom DSP's and other kinds of computational wizardy.
Which then begs the question...why are you buying a modelling synth? Why not just get a controller with rotary encoders and sliders, then load up a copy of Arturia Minimoog, because it will probably sound better :P.

A high quality midi keyboard + good soft synths is PROBABLY better than any synths in terms of quality and variety.
The thing that gets me though, is just how digital is the analogue emulation.
I wish i knew how analogue worked better, i can hear a difference, and know the reasoning, but i dont know how the output actually works :S

Well, a digital emulation of analog is just an approximation of an analog wave, made up of lots of little square waves :)
Also, with vintage equipment (especially Moogs and their famous filters) the waves themselves aren't perfect sines, triangles etc...they tend to have characteristic bumps and notches in them which add to the sound. I remember browsing the arturia site a while back and they showed a graph of a sound wave coming out of their Moog VSTi, and the sound wave coming out of a genuine Moog. The emultation was close, but definitely not spot on :)
Will software emulate a synth "better" than the original? It depends on how you define better look at it.
Hardware and software both have prominent places in the music industry, and they both complement each other rather nicely :). That's the main thing :D
