1.) What is a NG Grounds Gold Account good for?

• Ability to review portal submission
• Greater voting power
• Ability to post in the NG forums
• Secrets
• Ability to submit material to the flash or audio portal.

2.) Experience

How does one acquire experience points?

• Every day (by Eastern Standard Time), you may vote on at least 5 movies to deposit 10 experience points. Voting on more than 5 does not give you more experience points.
• Creating a public profile gives you a one-time bonus of 20 experience points.
• Referring somebody to NG to make an account or submit a movie.
• When creating a Grounds Gold account, one can acquire 5 experience points for each of up to 4 mailing lists to which one signs up.

What is experience good for?

• It increases your voting power (which is complemented by Blam/Protection points)
• It increases your level, making you look cooler
• It grants you secrets. Don't ask about the secrets, they are secrets.

Are there tricks to getting more?

Aside from the methods listed, there are no tricks or secret ways of boosting your experience. Anybody who tells you there are is either trying to make jokes at your expense or to get you to serve them somehow (commonly by increasing their popularity).

3.) Blam/Protection Points

How does one receive Blam/Protection points?

Blam/protection points can only be made on a movie that is "under judgment" (they appear gray in the portal). If you vote a 0 or a 1 on a movie, and it becomes subsequently deleted (score is less than 1.60 after 100 votes), then you get a blam point. Conversely, when you vote 2, 3, 4, or 5 on a movie that goes on to be protected (score is greater than 1.60 after 100 votes), then you will get a protection point.

What are Blam/Protection points good for?

Blam/Protection points are primarily useful in that they give a % bonus to your voting power (which otherwise would be strictly based upon your experience). The % bonus depends on your level.

What are the various Blam/Protect levels, how many Blam/Protect points do you need to get them, and what are their %-to-vote bonuses?

The following lists all the various Blam/Protect levels, with link to their picture, featuring (respectively): its level name, combined Blam/Protect score to enter level, blam/protection points required to get to that level from the pervious one, and the percent bonus to voting power from being in that level (with thanks to Ramagi for providing the exact statistics).

4.) Popularity

What is popularity?

Popularity is a measure of total profile hits by others that your profile has received. Your rank is based against all other users' popularity. Only one visit per person per day counts, and looking at it yourself counts as a hit.

How does one increase his popularity?

There is no sure-fire way to increase your popularity - but it can be increased by enticing more people to visit your profile more often, and there are many ways of doing this.

What is popularity good for?

Nothing except a jolly good laugh.

5.) Secrets

Secrets are special bonus' for having various levels of experience points. Aside from this, they are secret and are not to be discussed. You can view the secrets you have by being logged in and going here.

6.) Uploading Profile/Signature Pictures

A profile picture:

Make sure that you are signed in, and click here, and near the bottom, browse through your hard drive and select the picture you want (within the constraints indicated).

Requirements:

• 150x150 pixels (will be stretched to fit)
• GIF or JPEG format
• Maximum file size: 40k

A signature picture:

Make sure that you are signed in, and click here, browse through your hard drive and select the picture you want (within the constraints indicated).

• GIF or JPEG
• Max file size: 30 Kb
• Min file width: 20 pixels
• Max file width: 400 pixels
• Min file height: 20 pixels

1.) What does "BBS" stand for?

Qualification Criteria:
• User must have a profile.
• User must have posted to the BBS.
• User must have a picture in their profile.
• The picture must not exceed 40Kb in file size.
• That’s it. The rest's random.

Post limitations:

• You can only post at most 1 time per 60 seconds
• You can only post at most 4 times per thread per 30 minutes
• You can only post up to 6500 characters per post

A BBS thread picture:

When posting text, there is a field below the "Message" field where you can upload a picture by browsing through your computer and selecting one.

Requirements:

JPEG or GIF
Maximum file size: 50k
Max pixel width: 400
Max pixel height: 300

1.) Flash Portal Banner

What is it?

It's an interactive banner featuring flash icons moving about. It's interactive in that you can "kill" them by clicking on them, running them over with the bus, or press Tab and Enter. When the page loads, the "population" is how many flash games/movies are currently in the portal, and killing the flash icons reduces this number.

How do I use the bus to run them over?

Use the left and right arrow keys.

What happens if you kill enough of them to make the Portal Population zero?

It displays the following message (follow the link to do it yourself and see):

Isn't the final blam threshold 1.50 not 1.60?

Newgrundling, that's a pretty comprehensive explanation of NG and it is also clear and concise. You must have spent quite a bit of time on that. I recommend you send a link to this post to Wade, so he can see it. I'm sure he would put it on the site or create a link to this post somewhere visible on the site. Also, i have posted this picture mnay times, but i think it's a clearer way of showing how to create a link with HTML.

Probably not - although in this forum things slide off more slowly so more people might see it, but usually I'll just post this for anybody who has no clue what the hell they are doing - or just copy-paste sections out of it for quickie explanations to some people.

It was my understanding that it was 1.60, but I e-mailed liljim and I'll post his response here if he doesn't do it himself.

Probably not, like I said, it's all out there in one form or another, this is just me wasting half an hour instead of reading James A. Michner's Alaska.

Because I have nothing more interesting to put there and it helps other people out for nothing. Something very rare in life: a free lunch. No, nobody close to me has had breast cancer, but somebody doesn't have to be of a close relationship to me for their life to matter. It helps fund free mammograms for almost no effort on our part.
